5 stars (A must read for any Woman in a "man's" world) - This book is beyond helpful, and is presented in a manner that allows the reader to not only evaluate herself, but to immediately put into action solutions to potential problems. Each chapter is broken down into subjects that can affect a woman's progress up the ladder, with a mistake listed on one page and solutions to apply to the workplace on the next. This is a no-nonsense book that is written by a woman for women, so "quit bein' a girl" and buy this book! The insight and results are more than impressive - they're life changing. 2 stars (Thinly Veiled Misogyny) - With all due respect to Dr. Frankel, I am a 37yr old professional who has been turned down many times for jobs well qualified for and promotions earned because I didn't either kiss the right butt, stab backs or play corporate cut-throat. And I'd hoped this book would help me figure out some way to either fix the problem or discover the root cause. And unfortunately, I walked away from this book feeling allot worse than before. So a warning before reading into it too far. Although Dr. Frankel coaches female professionals to become more successful in the workforce, this book has placing 101 `mistakes' strictly on our heads as a kind of `punishment' for being feminine. Meaning, she claims that we shouldn't act like men, but act less like young girls and more like women. All these mistakes being gleaned from childhood, everything you were taught was wrong and everything boys were taught was right. More than half these mistakes poignantly made several references toward (after working with thousands of women) finding more often than not, `men don't do this, but women do.' As the list went on, I got the distinct impression that there's absolutely no way I could possibly fit into this mould and considering her statement of the mistake of `quit aiming for perfection' then leaving the paradox of being perfect and imperfect at the same time. 5 stars (Get this book if you can.) - The Quilt's of Gee's Bend exhibit was at the Corcoran in Washington DC earlier this year. I went 3 times with different people. Enjoyed each visit like it was the first! I saw the book then, but I am buying it now. It is informative and inspirational (my mother and I are working on our first quilt together and have others planned). The book has so many examples of the fine workmanship and talent and beauty that grew out of their necessity. Get this book! If you're luck enough to go to the exhibit - do it! - at least once! 5 stars (Read about this in Country Home magazine.) - I believe Country Home wrote an article about these woman and pictured them and some of the quilts. I found it fascinating! It made me thankful for what I've got and showed me that beauty is everywhere -- its just a matter of how you interpret the world around you. The book is filled with social history of this small place near Selma, Alabama. I've been lucky enough to visit Gee's Bend and see the quilt-making process. The Whitney Museum exhibit must have been wonderful. Sunday Morning on CBS did a story on the exhibit. The quilters traveled to New York for the opening and entertained the guests with their singing. That's what Gee's Bend is like: A rich yet poor stop on the road where women made the best of what they had and turned out great art in the process. ... 1 stars (Buyer Beware) - We received a rather terse note on returning from our vacation about not emailing a response back. The book was in HORRIBLE shape. His description of the 'worn ' appearance was wishful thinking. He did not email us and tell us that a credit had been issued . I found that out by followup. I can't say the 'near'service we received was very good. 5 stars (Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: Their Identification, Orna) - Dirr has the final word on all woody plants. You would be hardpressed to find any tree or shrub commonly used (and not so commonly used) today that is not listed in this incredible encyclopedia. I saved my copy from when it was a textbook in my Woody Lanscape Plants class in college, and have since updated to the latest version to use in practice 15 years later. A truly unbeleivable wealth of knowledge. 5 stars (A "Must Have" book for serious horticulturalists) - This manual contains a wealth of information on the identification, cultural requirements, propragation methods, and place of origin for a wide variety of trees and woody shrubs. I keep my copy in my car, take it wherever I go, and refer to it on a regular basis. Yes, it is a thick book. No, it is not without its own quirks. However, I recommend it highly over any other woody manual available. I have only one quibble. I wish Michael Dirr would hurry up and write a similarly in-depth manual on herbaceous plants. ... 5 stars (Complete guide to making tons of money) - Robert Kiyosaki is probably one of the few published business people who actually know what they are talking about. I say this because most business people would have you believe that getting rich isn't easy, or real estate is a bad investment because tenants could damage your property...which is absurd Rich Dad, Poor Dad shows the simplicity to acquiring great wealth. To invest in things with predictable earnings (real estate) To get out of liabilities, and to strive to growing your wealth. Some of the richest people in the world today use this method, and gained lots of money. Warren Buffet, for instance, use these factors when it comes to managing his finances, and he is the Second Richest Man in the world. This book is simple, yes, but it's simplicity boils down hard financial concept into concepts that you and I can understand, and TO ALL YOU NEGATIVE REVIEWERS OUT THERE: If you are not happy about a book that shows you how getting rich is easy, get out of the way and let others enjoy the book! 5 stars (An Excellent Book {Read With Caution}) - Yes this is a great book. But the content boils down to a motivational speech about oversimplified common sense {common sense repeated a lot and in a lot of different ways}. That being said, there's a great reason to repeat common sense rules like Kiyosaki does in Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Sometimes common sense just isn't as common as we think it is. Maybe the reason the book sells so well is people need to here them, because as simple as they are, people just aren't getting them. Yes, Kiyosaki is short on specifics. But then, if you want to know how to pick stocks, what rules to use when buying real estate, or how to hire contractors you should expect to buy more than one book. Maybe that's why there's a list of further readings in many of Kiyosaki's books. Many of those books weren't written by Kiyosaki {a real sign of a selfish guru <- sarcasm.} Most negative reviewer... 4 stars (Match Point (4.5 Stars)) - This is a well-written account of women's tennis between the years of 1971 and 1987 as told through the stories of Martina and Chrissie (no last names needed!). In those years, there really weren't any other women stars with staying power, and these two women were the face of the sport. The contrast in their childhood upbringings and off-court relationships and training practices are covered well and thankfully not in laborious detail. I would have liked to hear more from Tracy Austin, Hana Mandlikova, and other players to help balance the Martina/Chrissie rememberances, but other than that, this book is very good. 5 stars (Aces, straight sets, a winner) - For those of us old enough to remember the growth of tennis, particularly women's tennis, in the early 70's through 80's, this is an insider's walk down memory lane. Well researched, well written, and sensitive, it tells the inside story of what (and who) made the two title women tick, but also provides the necessary background for what was going on around them. Fans of women's sports,heck, sports in general, but particularly tennis, will enjoy this read. 5 stars (Best sports book I've ever read) - I thought I knew so much about Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova until I read Johnette Howard's extraordinary book. From start to finish, I couldn't put it down. The narrative is so compelling. It's not so much a biography as a wonderful story that unfolds page after page. The book is full of anecdotes that stay with you, and Howard draws detailed, insightful, often poignant portraits of Martina and Chris that go far beyond anything I've ever read about them before. Most importantly, to me, Howard excelled at putting Chrissie and Martina's rivalry in human terms. And she provides the sort of historical context that makes this not just a sports book, but a book that reads like a short cultural history of the time that Martina and Chris came along.
