5 stars (No problems with the install or the registration/activation) - Today,I upgraded from Systemworks 2003 Professional Edition to the Systemworks 2005 Premier on a PC with Windows XP Home Edition. It took approximately 30 minutes to load and register and everything went smoothly. Before starting, I read every review written here at Amazon so I'm well aware that my experience is not typical. I am offering the following suggestions in hopes that it may help someone who still has not been able to get it loaded or is about to try loading it for the first time. 1. First, to install this product on a XP machine, Norton says your processor should be a minimum of 300mhz (they neglect to tell you this on the outside of the box when they list the Minimum Systen Requirements) 2. Your Internet Explorer should be updated to version 6 3. If you have an earlier version of Systemworks (from 2003 and up) on your PC, don't uninstall it - if your version is earlier than 2003, you Must uninstall it before loading the new one. 4. Close all other Window programs - including those running in the System Tray. 5. Put in the Norton CD and click on "Install Norton SystemWorks" when the first panel comes up. 6. You'll be asked to accept the License Agreement" and then to enter your Product Key (it's long - 24 characters - and it appears on the back of your CD sleeve). 7. You're advised next to do a virus scan - so just click the "Start Scan" 8. It then asks you to select an Installation Type - the most trouble free choice here is the default - "Install Now". 9. Next, the software picks a folder where it wants to install the program...but, it gives you the ability to click "Browse" and change to another folder location. Again, the most trouble free choice here is the default. 10.It will then suggest that you Restart windows....then you are Done with the install (you still must register and activate). 11. At this point, after the Windows restart, I did get a couple of error me... 1 stars (Installation Nightmare - Try V-Com's Systemsuite Instead) - I'm still trying to install this software. There are about 7 technotes on the Symantec website dealing with installation problems for this software, as well as Personal Firewall. You better read them all before you even try, I say try, to install this stuff. Count on problems if you have a prior version that you are going to remove and upgrade. I've been working on installing this for about 4 hours, and one time I crashed the computer trying to implement one of Symantec's fixes -- spent 2 days trying to revive it, gave up and restored the hard drive with a backup image. Over the years, this software has become more bloated and problematic. Symantec has been complacent about product quality. Better bet is SystemSuite Pro 6 by V-com. I've been running version 5 for a year on another computer and it works very well, not a resource hog, only a few minor problems that V_com helped me fix. I installed Version 6 on my brother's computer with no problem at all. 1 stars (Big Headache!) - I've been using Norton's Systems Works and Firewall for years and have been very happy with them up till now. Already 2004's versions gave me problems and I could not install easily. I had constant automatic shut downs. Tech help was WORTHLESS! I finally had to reformat my computer and then everything worked fine. Now 2005's version is even worse. I could not install either Systems Works or the Firewall without my computer constantly shutting down during install. Finally, I had to do their fix of completely deleting all remenants of any Norton products. I did a reinstall of SW and my computer did not shut down, but not everything installed. I also managed to get the firewall installed as well. But since then, I've had constant problems again with my computer shutting down and then reboot problems when I try to run antivirus, or other Norton applications. I also keep getting error messages that some file is missing.... 1 stars (Be careful) - ... getting the promised rebate from Symantec takes sustained effort. You have to mail the stuff, you have to track you get a response, you have to re-send stuff when they say you haven't sent the right stuff (you have) within 7 days, etc. etc. It's a deceitful practice, I bet their marketeers are rewarded for LOW redemptions. 2 stars (SystemWork Premier 2005 & Internet Security 2005) - This is not exactly the same bundle, but I suspect the same issues would arise based on the other reviews. I am offering this in the hope that it may save others time and trouble: 1) Back your full system up via an image backup program before you begin, just in case. Perform all installs using the true Administrator account, not just an account in that group. Also, the installs may go easier if you turn off anti-spyware programs before beginning the installs. These products make lots of changes to the registry. Spybot, Spysweeper, the MS Anti-Spyware beta, and other programs that monitor registry changes will at best slow things down. Remember to turn the programs back on before going online. 2) Uninstall all prior versions of any Symantec products the programs replace or update. This is only supposed to be required for older version (2003 and before). Symantec always has problems with new installs. 3) After uninstalling and rebooting without error, install the Firewall first. If you do SystemWorks first, it may complain about the version of Anti-Virus installed when you get to the Firewall. Run live update for Internt Security bofore proceeding. This may have to be run a few times until no new updates are found and everything is installed. 4) Install SystemWorks. When it asks about changing the settings on your NIC (it may only do this if it sees a local network and a shared internet connection), CANCEL. I didn't, and was unable to get online for a few days. I had to resore from backup and reinstall to solve the problem. If the intent of the changes th... 1 stars (Wiped out system) - NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER buy this product! I installed in on my new laptop and as soon as it was done and said "reboot", my system went into a NEVER ENDING reboot cycle. I thought I had something on my computer that caused my problem. After reloading Windows XP Pro, I decided to make it the first software I would add, no other software conflicts. SAME THING, REBOOT LOOP, OVER AND OVER AND OVER. How can they sell this kind of garbage? I used 2003, 2004. Could NEVER get 2005 to install, alway an error message half way through. Maybe that was a blessing. 2006 WIPED OUT MY COMPUTER. DO NOT BUY AND DO NOT EXPECT SUPPORT WORTH A .... Support call put me in India to a person who could not get the spelling of my name and I could not understand her. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE TWO DAYS RECOVERING YOUR SYSTEM. 4 stars (Mixed bag, incrementally better, solid (mostly) reliable performance.) - Caveat: I am comparing this to systemworks standard, 2005. Although I've been a user of symantec/norton products for about 10 years now, there has always been some bugginess about them. This is the smoothest release I've ever seen. This is also based on a 3 day review, so it's not really thorough. This also refers to the download version, which is a bit more difficult because I had to burn my own ISO boot/backup/restore disk. That aside, the reason for the 4 stars is the redundancy in ways to do the same (or very similar) thing twice, and for the minimal (if any) changes to Norton Utilities. Norton Ghost 10, for example, does automatic and manual restore checkpoints on backups. GoBack does the same thing, but it's not meant for ISO, obviously. GoBack hasn't changed much, if at all, since 2005. However, the two togther are somewhat redundant, and could be possibly merged. Safe install in Goback is now automatic, tho (i.e., "it appears you are installing a new program, you'll have the option to restore to pre-install conditions" or some suc... 2 stars (Not of the caliper it used to be.) - Norton Utilities, now known as Norton SystemWorks, used to be a great package. In the last few years, it has gotten extremely bloated. At Home, I use another package for this reason. At work we have faster processor computers with more memory than my computer at home does. However, each installation of Norton seems to be worse than the previous. First, don't bother using Norton GoBack at all if you've got Windows XP. It doesn't do much more than Windows XP System Restore, and it seriously bogs down your system on start-up. For example: One computer we literally would hit Ctrl-Shift-ESC and it took 30 seconds for the Task Manager to come up. Uninstalling the GoBack part of Norton, and the system was back to regular speed. A second computer, the login took 5 minutes (no exaggeration), upon uninstalling GoBack, the login took 1 minute. The anti-spyware portion doesn't pick up much, either. I pick up several items with Adaware and Spybot that Norton won't pick up. Speed Disk and the System Cleanup tools still work nicely. Mostly everything else is useless or just slows down your system to the point of making it pretty slow and useless, which defeats the whole purpose of owning a computer optimizing tool. 3 stars (Slow but sufficient.) - I remember being blown away with how great some of the first Systemworks programs were. They cleaned up the computer, protected from viruses, everything you needed. Systemworks 2006 seems to do an adequate job, but at the price of dogging your system down unbelievably. Full virus scans take a long time no matter what program you use, but SW2006 has been taking well over two hours every time. As for its spyware protection, it has yet to detect anything on my hard-drive, but Ad-Aware (free download) always picks up about 10-20 immediately after the Norton Scan. The worst feature is the System Doctor which is supposed to constantly monitor your computer for problems which might... 1 stars (Don't purchase this if you have 10.4) - the utilities portion of this software package will not work on 10.4 and Norton said it won't be updating it. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Go with one of the many other programs that can actually do the work. Norton has hit the skids! 1 stars (Shame on Norton) - Norton should have taken this product off the market. They had decided not to continue development for OS X 10.4 Tiger but didn't tell the coustomers leaving many like me to find out by tragic experiencce that their once great software is now dangerous to install and and difficult to uninstall. If you are running OS X 10.4 DO NOT INSTALL this program. 2 stars (Mac User beware) - Is Norton Antivirus reliable? I think that can be answered with a yes. Well, there are not so many Mac viruses around, so that statement is not validated in my own experience. What neither Amazon nor Symantec really tell you on first glance is that Antivirus 9.0 is NOT compatible with OSX 10.4. So I ended up buying Systemworks (for a steeper price then the Windows products no less) and it did not work. Two lengthy conversations with Symantec's service center in India later I knew that I had to dish otu another $40 for the upgrade to Antivirus 10.0 - you can get reimbuirsed for your purchase but it seems to take a lifetime. The Utilities package was unable to repair one of my disks wken I needed it... who knows why. Otherwise it seems to function OK under 10.4. Overall, my recommendation is if you have OSX 10.4 or plan to upgrade soon, look for another product. ...
