Get copies of Kotter, Schein, Beitler, or Collins' books. 5 stars (An Excellent How To Guide on Managing/Creating Change.) - I found the book to be extremely informative. Douglas Smith has done a masterfull job of creating a step by step guide for the process of both Creating and Managing Change in any organization. He also points out why many Change Efforts fail. The 10 step guide that he has created should help us all avoid the common pitfalls of this process and help greatly improve our odds of success. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either thinking about starting a change effort or currently in the midst of one now. 5 stars (The best hand-on book about Change Management available.) - This is clearly the best book about the practical side of Change Management I've read so far (and I've read more then 20 by now). The ASL class used this book and with this book, it was so easy to learn ASL! 4 stars (Open Says Me) - This book is an extraordinary manual for emergency entry procedures. The directions are clear and concise, and the numerous illustrations are very helpful. This book can teach you how to bypass a lock with a bottle of bleach -- who knew ?? 5 stars (Far from easy ....) - I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.) The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading. This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. 4 stars (Cool Kitchens) - This book contains an excellent collection of photos of Arts & Crafts period kitchens. It discusses the philosophy of design Gustav Stickley and others advocated and shows you the results, which are still beautiful, even after all these years. It is a little short on detail, if you wanted to reproduce the look of the Arts & Crafts kitchen, but it does spark the imagination. The examples of various kitchens is broken down by designer, so it is easy to pick out their specific design influence. I found this book an inspiration for some of the designs I would like incorporate in my own home, and combined with some other books of design details, it is excellent. 5 stars (A Great Source of Ideas for Remodeling a Bungalow Kitchen) - I bought this book to get ideas on renovating my 1930 bungalow kitchen. Although the book focuses more on restoration than renovation, I still found it a wonderful source of ideas. Filled with lots of full color pictures of restored and well-preserved kitchens, the book is worth its price for the pictures alone. The text covers both historic and current issues and is a wealth of information. Each section of the book has a chapter called "Obsessive Restoration" for those serious about historic integrity, but also offers a "Compromise Solution" for those of us who need to balance 21st century demands. We found the book extremely valuable in picking layout, hardware, appliances, cabinets, and flooring. It really helped us to design a kitchen that meets the needs of a modern family, yet which blends in with the historic values of our home. 4 stars (The Real Deal) - This book is great encouragement for those homeowners who know they want authentic vintage, but have to deal with current day construction fellas who just don't get it. Remember there is a version with some video orientation that is more expensive but could be useful if you dont have a teacher. 5 stars (Update Your Complete Metalsmith) - I've had and used McCreight's original "Complete Metalsmith" for years and wasn't sure I needed the new version. After owning it for several months now I couldn't be happier. The author assumes that the reader is as interested in WHY things happen as he is. This is not a step-by-step project book, but a bench tool. Do you need to know how to score metal to make a sharp corner? How can you tell when a piece of metal is annealed? Have you been bezel setting stones and are now ready to advance to a prong setting? Ready to make a hinge? Casting? Fusing? Repouss?#? Need to know what the Precious Metal Clay craze is about and how to start? It's all in here and the information is presented in a format made for the beginner or the experienced jeweler. He even covers how to photograph your work. I love that McCreight shows several ways of doing things so that if you don't have the equipment or tools, you can still proceed. In his typical style, the author has thought of everything. He's even made a smaller and less expensive version of the book for the "starving artists" and students among us. I have the version with the CD and use the software on my Palm regularly in my metalsmithing classes. 3 stars (Should you buy French By Design?) - I just did. The homes & rooms featured in this book indicate that money is no object and these homeowners want you to know it. Subtlety is non-existant. Rooms are very "we had a decorator & we spent a LOT". Most items looks too new, too ruffled, smocked, tucked and otherwise adorned. HOWEVER, if you can get past the pictures & READ THE TEXT- Phillips has a lot to say that is excellent. She lists sources & frequently shares fascinating comments on everyday details of French style (who knew about brass hardware vs brushed nickel?). If you read; buy it. If you look only at photos, don't! Charles Faudree is much better in the genre in my opinion. 5 stars (Beautifully presented.) - Another of Philips' beautiful French decorating books. Homes presented in this book, as with her other books are high end showing us the sumptuous fabrics, and lovely French furniture she specializes in. Homes shown are mostly mansions, not the average house. Good coffee table book. 5 stars (Brilliant, Great Sense of Design, a Visual Delight) - Not unlike all of Phillips' books, this book is a masterpiece of European syle and design. 3 stars (so-so) - ok, if you're looking for more of a coffee table book than a serious research source. arieff does provide a brief history of some selected prefabricated ventures, but the other 3/4 of the book is of more modern attempts, all of which are not described or displayed as thoroughly as i had hoped. most of the designs are also of doubtful marketability, and the pompous attitudes of some of the designers is off-putting. some pretty pictures, however. 1 stars (This book stinks!) - Let me make a simple observation, people by these type of books for the pictures. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words right? But flipping through this book gave me the impression that the authors wanted to explain in words rather than with pictures. It was "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah" when a few more photos would have been much better. Why describe with words??? I liked " Prefab Modern" by Jill Herbers better because it has more designs. It actually had many of the same designers in Prefab but with more pictures, less words, and a floor plan which really helps you to conceptualize the designs. Not only that but the book by Jill Herbers is cheaper too... 3 stars (Good intro and overview, but not the whole story) - While this is a beautiful book with some specific details on prefab in the modern age, it left me still wanting more. After reading Dwell ever since its inception, this seemed a bit light and redundant. If you want to own every book on the subject, then by all means purchase it (I would understand: prefab modern is becoming an obsession for me). 4 stars (Waterproof your book and take a bath!) - Considering the fact that the bathroom was still an area being perfected when bungalows were built, this book displays an insightful history into bathroom technology, both at the time and throughout history. As well, it gives reality-based examples for a bungalow-phile to follow in order to mould their bathroom after those of the era, allowing for the advancement modernity. A well-researched, well-done book. 5 stars (Bathroom Inspiration) - This book saved my life. I had no idea what to do with the bathroom of my new/old 1910 apartment until I read it. The text educated me (despite the numerous bad puns), the pictures inspired me, and the authors' upbeat attitude (not to mention their extensive list of resources) kept me from losing heart while looking for appropriate tile and fixtures. If you have a house built anywhere between 1899 and 1950 and you need to restore or renovate the bathroom, this is the book for you. It is not, however, a how-to book. It is a what-to book.
