Psychological Testing - Principles- Applications- and Issues

5 stars (Psychological testing, principles, applications and issues) - I have read many books in the psychology field, and I thought this book did an excellent job of presenting clear and concise information on psychological testing. The book focused on the various testing techniques that are used in the psychology field. It raised important issues around how to appropriately apply testing and why we use them. i recommend this book to professionals in the field or to anyine who may have a curiosity about psychological testing in general. It's a real eye opener!Your interest won't fade out. ...

Systems Engineering Principles and Practice

5 stars (Excellent SE text and reference) - I have just completed the JHU program in Systems Engineering. This book is the foundation for the curriculum and is a very readable, solid overview of Systems Engineering. All phases of the system life-cycle are introduced and tied together to truly illustrate the process. The book focuses on processes, the tools used will change, but good Systems Engineering will stay the same. The process to derive good requirements that are able to be implemented and tested are the same regardless of technology or field. ...

Principles of Biostatistics

1 stars (the "never again" book for biostatistics) - Let me just start by saying I really like math, but this book did not help me to learn biostatistics at all. It doesn't explain the issues and equations very well and it has absolutly no answers in the back to check with yours, that's a whole other book...and that only has answers to the odds. Perhaps this would be a decent book for anyone who already has a handle on the subject and wants to learn more, but if this is your first exposure to biostatistics, like me, try another source to learn from, this book makes a difficult subject near impossible. 2 stars (Social scientists beware - research other options) - I'm a postdoctoral level biomedical researcher who has used many other biostatistics books before. This book is currently used for entry-level biostatistics at my School of Public Health. The bonus is that this book is geared towards epidemiology (eg, there is a chapter on rates and standardization), and I liked the CDROM that comes with the book and contains datasets. Unfortunately, the authors have chosen to derive many key concepts from probability theory. This is fine if you are comfortable with probability concepts. However, most students with background in social sciences are not: thus I found that this approach often adds an unnecessary level of complexity. Most of the examples are long-winded, dragging on from page to page - flipping back and forth is extremely frustrating, and the layout makes it difficult to grasp what the point of each example is. Also, the long-winded style makes this book a poor desk reference if you just quickly need to check a formula or definition. Sadly I have to say that I very rarely use this $100 book - there are plenty of more accessible and succinct entry-level texts that cost a fraction of this volume. And yes, Google is better learning tool than this book. 2 stars (Muddled presentation of concepts) - Principles of Biostatistics certainly presents all of the in...

Universal Principles of Design

3 stars (good design support book) - i found the book to be a good support when approaching a design. it lays out a series of axioms which help the designer to look at various design stratagies at the initial design stages. 5 stars (With absolute certitude a future "classic" design book) - If you want to make some money, I recommend you buy a couple copies of this book now and put them away for 10 years. With absolute certitude the "Universal Patterns of Design" (UPOD) will be a future "classic" design book. There are very few books that fit this category, but this will be one. The author's have done an absolutely stunning job of condensing the patterns format in codifying 210 design principles which human beings need to relate to products and works of art. This book rivals ANY other design work I have ever read. Absolutely highest recommendation. 5 stars (Great Introduction to important themes) - This book is a great introduction to many themes relevant to all form of design. Many references are given for anyone wishing to further develop their understanding of the theme discussed. ...

Taking Charge of Change- 10 Principles for Managing People and Performance

3 stars (Some good ideas, but not the best.) - This is a good book, but it is not one of the best. Get copies of Kotter, Schein, Beitler, or Collins' books. 5 stars (An Excellent How To Guide on Managing/Creating Change.) - I found the book to be extremely informative. Douglas Smith has done a masterfull job of creating a step by step guide for the process of both Creating and Managing Change in any organization. He also points out why many Change Efforts fail. The 10 step guide that he has created should help us all avoid the common pitfalls of this process and help greatly improve our odds of success. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either thinking about starting a change effort or currently in the midst of one now. 5 stars (The best hand-on book about Change Management available.) - This is clearly the best book about the practical side of Change Management I've read so far (and I've read more then 20 by now). This book really helps me in my day-to-day work as a Change Manager. Smith has closed a big gap in the Change Management literature, this is the most practical book you can look for! Highly recommended. ...

Principles of Modern Chemistry

5 stars (Great chemistry textbook for college freshmen) - Though many people would find this book distasteful, it is an extremely good source of information for both basic and intermediate chemistry. It is obviously not a book any student can handle, but with a good background in basic chemistry, the book will take the student a long way down the path of chemistry. The book uses colorful pictures and graphs to show the reader what the chemistry looks like in real life rather than just teaching the bare concept. Chemistry is not about doing word problems; it is about actually seeing the results and learning to analyze these results. If you prefer to just get through chemistry and "learn" how to do problems without learning the real applications, choose another book. If you actually want to learn chemistry, this is the perfect book for you. As opposed to the average textbook that drags a subject matter on, this book is very concise and moves on after showing a derivation of an equation or one sample problem. Obviously this book may seem hard and seemingly impossible to comprehend at times, but a good recommendation is to get enough sleep before reading the book because it is much denser than other introduction to chemistry textbooks. 4 stars (Pretty Good) - I never actually used this book; I TAed for a class that used it. I ended up reading alot of it and thought that it was pretty good, but didn't cover all the math and derivations that were used in the course. Its a good book for basic general chemistry, but it does not explain the math very well. I also wouldn't reccommend it for students who have never taken chemistry at all because its probably too advanced. Take home message: its a more advanced general chem book, but fails miserably in explaining the math. 5 stars (excellent) - I have read the other reviews, but I think this is an excellent text for general chemistry (or introductory courses). The fundamentals are well-explained, and the core itself is easily...

Wiley GAAP 2005 - Interpretation and Application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles Wiley

4 stars (Great Book!) - GAAP is very hard to understand if it is not in laymen's terms. This book is great at "translating" the prounouncements. I definitely recommend it. 5 stars (Great GAAP Resource) - As a frequent reader of accounting literature in my daily activities, I have used the Wiley GAAP Guide for several years. The authors have converted complex accounting issues into well written and easy to understand language. It's a valuable resource. 5 stars (USING THE 2005 GAAP GUIDE ) - I am a sole practitioner who has been using the Wiley GAAP Guide for many years. I find it to be an invaluable source for answering questions pertaining to GAAP issues in a clear and concise manner. I think that every practioner needs to have a copy of the GAAP Guide in their library. ...

Psychology- Principles in Practice

1 stars (I'm not an idiot, thankyouverymuch. ) - I was just assigned this book for my psychology class and managed to read/skim through it. Maybe I'm just angry because I had the opportunity to take a college-level class in cognitive theory over the summer and was thus exposed to much more interesting reading material, but this book is a real piece of work... even compared to most high school textbooks I've had. For starters, the pictures are much larger than the words. As much as a good illustration can help one grasp a difficult concept, the ones in this book show pretty much NOTHING. Then, there's the whole tone of the material, which really aggrivates me. It seems very condescending, with words like "placebo" that almost any high school senior would know phoneticized (pluh-SEE-boh). In additoin, it appears as though more effort has been placed towards catering to special lobby groups than towards creating a memorable book that will sucessfully teach psychology and impart a love for the field. "Race relations" are referred to a lot, as are "animal rights." As liberal as I am (anti-war, quasi-socialist, for legal recognition of gay unions, pro-environmentalist to a certain degree), I really get irked when these petty, almost-nonissues that (stupidly) took up much of the Left's focus twenty years ago are brought back to life in the form of instructional materials. They water down the actual material to a point where it almost becomes propoganda. In an effort to make the text "non-biased," it has in effect become MORE biased... just in the "right" direction. If you are a teacher and reading this, please do me (and pretty much every other student out there) a favor and DO NOT use this textbook in your classroom. I don't know if there are other books that do the same thing better or what your options are, but I would certainly not recommend this one. Perhaps you could let your students read some actual research journals or college textbooks; if you give them the ben...

Chemical Principles

4 stars (Amazon.com, please check your spelling) - According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a principle is a comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine or assumption; a principal is a person who has controlling authority or is in a leading position. Zumdahl correctly named his book "Chemical PRINCIPLES". Amazon.com, please follow suit. 4 stars (Good and bad) - The main strength of the book is its large amount of interesting and largely error-free problems. Unfortunately, some of the more advanced material isn't really well explained. A good example is the book's coverage of particle-in-a-box: it's covered well enough for a beginning student to solve some problems, but without the more thorough follow up you get in a quantum class, you're just pushing symbols. The same goes for many of the other, somewhat more advanced topics in the book - MO theory, gas dynamics, etc. It may have made pchem and inorganic a little easier, but it made for frustrating reading at the time. 5 stars (Information) - This book is the current book for Chemistry 107 at the University of Illinois, taught by none other than Professor Zumdahl. Tthe book is very good for a college accelerated class. Clear examples. ...

Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases- 2-Volume Set

5 stars (The book you need) - As an infectious disease fellow, I recommend that anyone who want be an ID man should have such a book. Most infectious problems and diseases have been detailed in this book, although there are far going of emerging diseases and new antibiotics. The only shortcomes of this book are lackiing comprehensive details and reveiw of antimicrobial therapy for some disease entities. 5 stars (A good clinical microbiology text) - The two volume set is indeed a comprehensive reference work, but individual chapter can be read by themselves. I use this book on almost a daily basis, the only negative against it is that such a large book by its size can only be updated at intervals of a number of years so a folder in which to put your acculated journal articles next to it, until the next edition is advised as, infectious diseases is not a static field. Since there is a CD rom available now that may well be worth checking out. In closing for anybody involved in anything from clinical microbiology to a infectious disease specialist this book is a must. 5 stars (Every Infectious Disease specialist has one!) - I'm an Infectious Diseases fellow, and everyone who rotates through this training program, obtains in some way or another, a copy of this book. It is an awesome review of every known topic in infectious diseases. The first volume consists of I. Principles II. Syndromes. Principles focuses on topics ranging from antibiotics, their mechanism of action, pharmocokinetics and methods of bacterial resistance, to epidemiology and infection control. Syndromes focuses on various clinical problems from the "common cold" to endocarditis. These are heavily researched, and supported with your standard references section for further investigation. Each disease is discussed in detail and includes clinical symptoms, epidemiology, etiology, complications, and treatment. My only criticism is that the treatment sections - often the focus of any infectious disease cons...

The Principles of Learning and Behavior

1 stars (Not for non-psychology majors) - This book is only for those who already have a strong background in biology and psychology. However, if you are new to the subject, then this book is not for you. Students who are taking this subject as an elective will have a hard time with the research style presentation of topics. I'd much rather buy a book that explains topics as clear and concise as possible rather than have a play on words. ...

Welding- Principles and Applications- Fifth Edition

5 stars (A college text on Welding) - This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processes you're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills. I own several books on welding and this one blows them all out of the water by a very wide margin. The price is college textbook high, but you get what you pay for with this volume. This is a very professional and well organized reference and should be on every welder's book shelf. The above review is for the fifth edition of this book. Older versions are around but you should purchase the latest edition to keep abreast of new welding practices and techniques. 5 stars (An Excellent, well-written and well organized text) - I have used an earlier edition and this edition in self-study of welding technology and as an aid in the development of my welding skills necessary for certifications. The text is exceptionally well organized and thorough. The material is comprehensive in explaining not only about the various welding technologies, but also in presenting the proper techniques and practices of welding, including great color pictures showing both good and bad practices. Every aspect of the welder's skill set is covered. Additionally, there are comprehensive end-of-chapter review questions, an excellent glossary, and a useful index, which perhaps could be beefed up somewhat. All in all, this was a very readable, worthwhile addition to my metal trades library . My money was well spent. ...

Harrison-s Principles of Internal Medicine 16e Two-Volume Set

4 stars (Excellent reference for medical students) - Harrison's is a detailed, robust and in-depth text ideal for medical students. There is no stone unturned. The single book is rather bulky and I therefore recommend purchasing the two volume version. 5 stars (Gold Standard for Internal Medicine Text Books) - For the last 30 years of my medical practice I have bought Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine and I have never found anything better than Harrison's. Most of my talks and classes at the Medical School are based on the chapters found in Harrison's. Principles of Neural Science

4 stars (Complete overview of the field) - I am an undergraduate neuroscience major. I chose Principles Of Neural Science on my own, because I wanted a higher-level text than the course required. The textbook provides a good overview of the many different aspects of neuroscience, from synaptic transmission to perception to development. It is easy-to-read, not dense like some textbooks. I find it especially helpful to read a chapter of the text before attempting to dive into a research article. My only criticism is that it refers to material from other chapters as though it should already be learned, as though the book is meant to be read in order and not used as a reference. With 63 chapters, I am not sure this is appropriate. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this text. 4 stars (Adequate Resource) - This text is great for basic information, but isn't practical if you are pursuing neuroscience. While it goes over a wide range of topics, it never goes in depth. If you have a lot of questions, you may want to consider a more advanced neural science text book. 3 stars (A useful reference, but not a good text) - This massive book has lots of useful information and informative figures, and the decent index makes it highly likely that you will find what you need. However, using it as a textbook for a course is a ridiculous thing to do, especially if it's an undergraduate course. The amount of material is simply overwhelming, and it would discourage students from pursuing a career in neural science. If you are a neurobiology teacher and am considering using this text in your course, please reconsider. In my opinion (as a neurobiology teacher), a concise and readable text is far more effective. ...

Microbiology - Principles and Explorations

5 stars (Great book for teachers and students) - This text explains some very complex information in a very reader-friendly way. The photos, charts and practical examples of how microbiology impacts everyone's life make it very readable. I would recommend it for teachers and students! 5 stars (Micro Made Easy) - This is one of the best text books I have ever used. The information is clear, concise, and interesting. It gives examples throughout the book of how microbiology is being used now to help us. 3 stars (Less than perfect but ended up ok) - unfortunatly, I received the wrong book however, seller was very quick to respond and advise me of the error and the fastest way to get my refund. I was told I would receive a check in the mail for the cost of return shipping which was more than I expected to pay. I did receive my full refund but never received the check for the return shipping of the book which was sent to me in error and seller did not have the book I purchased in stock. ...

The Heart of Mentoring- Ten Proven Principles for Developing People to Their Fullest Potential

5 stars (Life changing principles that lead to a true legacy) - This book really captures the essense of a successful mentoring relationship. Anyone who leads, coaches, manages or influences others should read this book - a few times. The principles have literally changed my life and have given me the understanding and confidence to now help others. After all, the legacy any of us can hope to leave can only be measured in the lives of other people. 5 stars (Fantastic insight into relationships) - This book is so applicable because it truly does go to the heart of mentoring which is investing in others at the same time you are being given back in return. This book could even be called, the heart of ALL relationships. I like what the back says "The secret to living....is giving". It truly is the secret and has completely changed the way I approach business as well as personal relationships. 5 stars (WOW!) - this book has truly changed my life as I have applied it not only to myself, but also to all of the other relationships in my life (spouse, co-workers, children, friends, relatives, etc.). The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work - A Practical Guide from the Country-s Foremost Relati

5 stars (Action oriented advice for today's couples) - I found this book to be very helpful and therapeutic. The first chapter is a little challenging to get through but after that I found practical insight into common challenges faced by today's couples as well as excercises and action items to overcome these challenges. There is a lot to read but I found it well worth the time. I would definitely recommend this book for any committed couple regardless of whether or not you have major problems in your relationship. The book sheds light on how to discuss problems in a reasonable fashion and does not put any unreasonable expectations on you to always agree with your spouse. It even acknowledges that individual relationships are likely to have their own set of perpetual problems that will never be solvable but teaches you have to cope with these issues as a couple. 5 stars (The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work) - An excellent, research based text that offers practical information. It's about real life rather than Hallmark movie portrayals of relationships and offers many ways to work on repairing, rekindling, and maintaining loving feelings in a marriage. It's well presented, clear, easy to read and suited all readers. It ought to be required reading in high school and college so people have more realistic expectations of themselves and their partners. 5 stars (Solid Review on SEC OND Marriage book - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - We bought this as our sec ond book on marriage (since we're still young at heart), and found a nice primer on does and don'ts. It covers a lot good tips on how to relate with eachother and drivers most of its analysis from insider trading tips on successful relationships. My husband, Jameson Thottam, and I lead busy work lives working across coasts (him in the mortgage company working for firms such as Battery Ventures/Loan Page, IndyMac Bank, Homestore and myself on the East Coast) and its always nice to get insights from o...

Winning With People - Discover the People Principles that Work for You Every Time

4 stars (Another Winner!) - First of all I want to confess that I am John Maxwell junkie. I not only thoroughly enjoy his books but they help me in becoming a better person. This book is written where every chapter is golden and yet able to stand alone. You can simply open the book to any chapter and it will enrich you. Even though the chapters are segmented into 5 logical sections. I especially liked the chapter entitled, "The Pain Principle: Hurting people hurt people and are easily hurt by them". This chapter increased my empathy and sensitivity for hurting people. It just makes sense that those that lash out are really hurting people. I gave this book 4 stars simply because his best work by far was, "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership". As helpful as this book was I simply tried to read a chapter each evening before going to sleep. Like a nutritious light snack that won't keep you up all night. 4 stars (Impressed with reservations) - This is the second book I've read from John Maxwell. Overall, I found the book to be well written, personal, and filled with principles, explanations, and anecdotes. Each principle is explained in a manner that should strike a cord in many people. He supports the concept embodied by the principle with anecdotes, both personal and historical. If you are looking for a book to help with interpersonal relationships, this is a good book to to start with. John covers a lot of ground in this book. That would be my major criticism of the book. There are many, many strategies and approaches, and keeping track can get confusing. They are well organized. This will have to be a book that you refer back to as issues in your life come up and you are looking for help. I think Covey's work is more managable and priciple system oriented, but that shouldn't detract from John's work. There is an unlying system, but John's approach appears to be more of set of tools to help you, with each dealing with a specific type of problem. 5 stars (...
