4 stars (One of the Best) - This is one of the most readable environmental texts I've seen. It is very comprehnsive and the coverage of the newest scientific results in the science of resource conservation is simply excellent. The content is oriented around a group of themes and applied to the concept of ecosystems and their management. Is almost as if the author has takrn the first halting steps toward a unified environmental theory. Two negative points though. Coverage of forest resources is a little thin, and like most textbooks, the price is way too high. 5 stars (Making environmental science relevant) - Professor Richard Wright has succeeded where so many others have failed, by creating a textbook that makes the subject of environmental science relevant. After all, most students taking a course that uses this book are doing so because it's required, rather than as an elective. As an adjunct professor of environmental science at Endicott College, I have reviewed many textbooks for possible use in introductory courses. This one is a standout, and based on feedback from students over the past four years, they, too, agree. The text is easy to read, and enhanced by many graphs, charts and photographs. 5 stars (Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED) - Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing. This is not a hippie guide to backwoods eco-conservation. It is a practical manual, firmly grounded in science and economics that explains different strategies for maximizing comfort while minimizing energy use. In every case, the author examines both the pros and cons of the measure, and calculates the expected payback term. It is so helpful to have a book that is realistic in its treatment of energy conservation. Lots of books outline promising energy saving techniques, none I've read before talk so frankly about the problems you will encounter when you implement them. Quite technical in many places, the text excels at explaining important concepts that are often ignored in other texts. I have a background in physics, but not until reading this book did I have a good grasp of the operation of absorption coolers or how the spectrum of a light bulb affects the visual comfort of the scene it illuminates. The concise overview of heat transfer mechanisms is more thorough than any thermodynamics textbook I've ever read. Most important of all is the practical advice that is clearly based on a huge body of real experience. As the book so frequently points out, energy saving measures are useless if they break or are defeated by building occupants. Hundreds of (non-obvious) examples of these failures are given, with pictures. This book would be great for anyone with responsibility for designing or maintaining buildings of any size. If you are hesitant to pay the high price, find it at a local library. I don't write many Amazon reviews, but after reading this book I felt compelled to strongly recommend it. 5 stars (Superlative! 5 stars (A Primer for Disaster Recovery Planning) - reader who want to start their DRP, and do not know where to start with, this is the book that you can kick off with your DRP meeting with this guide. A good book that you can trust and work around with your IT DR on this subject. Case studies, project timelines, statistics, organisastion charts of a DRP, and some questionairs and forms help readers to quickly have all these information in your finger tips. As a planner, I find it very useful too. It also act as a check lists of your current planning and be sure to cover as many area as possible. The Appendix is very useful that provide flowcharts, charts, diagrams, forms, questionair, procedures and more. A book that should not be miss. 5 stars (Disaster Recovery Planning) - As an IT Manager for a mid-sized (140 emp) company, I found the primer to be extremely helpful as a starting point for planning. Hiatt clearly explains the nature of risk and planning. Statistics are lengthy but drive the point home. Most importantly, she reveals that DRP isn't only about IT. If you are an IT person in charge of starting the process, this is an excellent primer that points out all the other areas you have to consider. Hiatt outlines in 100 pages all the elements of research, planning, implementation, and maintenance. She reveals who should be involved in the process and what type of people should maintain the accuracy and currency of the plan. She even gives criteria on how to choose your team. Hiatt references many times throughout the manual when/how/if to use an outside consultant and off-site storage facilities. The following 150+ pages of vendor listings, charts and appendices are extremely helpful. She doesn't just write about planning, but gives you the checklists, plans, and questionnaires to help you get started. It will be much easier for me to use some of her lists and customize for our needs instead of having to write it all from scratch. Plus, sh...
