5 stars (View From a Math Tutor) - I have tutored math for over 20 years and Bittenger's book is one of the best I have ever seen for taking pre-algebra students from the basics to the complex. His examples are clearly laid out, easy to follow, and they lay a solid foundation for higher math learning. This book's concepts will definitely help high school students prepare for the SATs. 5 stars (Great self study book.) - I'm 38 and am a home schooler and to get back into math mode, I chose this book. I did every odd problem and some of the systhesis problems. You will learn the material if you take the time. I spent around 14 or 15 months to get through the book. The program is excersises and review. Constant review is huge plus. I recommend you get the solutions manual from addison wesley. I've just started Marv's et.al.. Precalculus book and then will go onto calculus. I'm enjoying the math. Much more then in high school. My son and I sit down and learn together. He says "get your book" and lets do math. The key to his desire to do math is because he see's his dad doing it. I've seen many other books and this tops them all. 5 stars (Makes it easy-free tutoring, & web site practice problems!) - This book is not all you get. The book itself is great. But the additional FREE helps which come with the book assure that even the most inept math student can learn algebra. These helps consist of, but are not limited to:1) free tutoring via phone,email,& fax; 2)free practice problems via internet website. Other supplemental materials consist of: Videotapes, Tutorial Software, and a solutions manual. These are all available for the student. I haven't even mentioned the benefits that a classroom teacher has through the Instructor Supplements. These consist of a Test Bank/Instructor's Guide, extra practice problems, mtls for transparencies, video tape index, and several tools for the computer users: test generator, test grader,on-line course managemen... 5 stars (Further adventures with algebra...) - This book is currently being used by the community college where I tutor as a book for the internet version of Intermediate Algebra, a course that most of our two-year degree programmes require as part of the mathematics requirement, and one of the most 'popular' courses at the tutor centre. Because this book is used by the internet course, it has to be well crafted to enable students to learn from on their own, and indeed, it seems to pass muster on that account. The organisation of the book is fairly standard for algebra texts of this level: basic number theory is introduced (which should be a refresher or review from previous basic mathematics or algebra courses), the linear equations and inequalities are introduced, with equations of one variable, some elementary set operations, and the concept of inequalities. The third chapter introduces graphs, with the x-y coordinate axis, two-variable equations introduced. The fourth chapter looks at systems of equations, both in two and three variables, and introduces matrix methodology. The fifth chapter develops the ideas of exponents, introducing scientific notation and polynomial multiplication and division. This is a prelude to factoring, the subject of chapter six. Trinomial factors, special cases and general approaches are discussed, including the grouping method and trial-and-error. Chapter seven looks at rational expressions, complex fractions, and applications that build upon the factoring. Chapter eight introduces roots and radicals as a prelude to the quadratic equation in chapter nine. Graphing of functions such as parabolas is developed here. Chapter ten looks at logarithmic, inverse and exponential functions, leading to analytic geometry topics such as conic sections, nonlinear functions and nonlinear systems in chapter eleven. 5 stars (incorrect review) - Please disregard the other review - it is not for this title. Italian Movie Talk for Advanced learners is not a comic strip. It is a full-length feature presentation - a real movie. 4 stars (Good, but only if you learn how to watch it...) - This is a fun way to practice Italian. You see the story frame by frame and hear the dialogue being read in Italian, then you can click to see a translation of what was said. Also you can choose to hide the words in Italian, to see if you can understand what they are saying without reading the words. It is very challenging though for me as an intermediate student. But it is also very beneficial for intermediate students and above. I definitely would not reccomend it to beginners. And now for my biggest complaint about this program and the real reason why I felt compelled to review it. The story is based on an Asterix book where a baby shows up at their house, the comic is called Asterix and Son. Now I guess Eurotalk thought it would be fun to let you hear every single sound as it is written in the comic. In other words, if they punch a Roman and the authors wrote POW! in the book, you will hear a sound like someone getting punched. This is no problem for things like fighting and the dog barking, but in probably 75% of the frames, the baby whines. Again this is no problem in a comic book, since reading the word "Wah" doesn't hurt your eyes. But you would think for this program they would just assume that we know what a baby crying sounds like. They couldn't even let us hear it once or twice and then decide ok we get the picture. They let us hear the baby crying every single time. This gets slightly irritating after the first two pages, by the end of the first CD you will be insane and Italian will be the last thing on your mind, and you will probably be deaf too, so what good is it if you can understand Italian anyway? The baby whines 4-5 times louder than anyone in the comic strip ta...
