5 stars (Breakthrough Book!) - I purchased this book for my teenager before sending her off to college as a freshman. She doesn't like to read, and basically dislikes books, so I was hoping she would at least skim through it and pick up some of the principles in this book. To my surprise she started reading it and never put it down! I have not read the book, but there must be something very practical and relevant in this book if it grabbed my 18 year old daughters attention! She thought it was great! 1 stars (Condescending Fluff) - It's appalling to me that this book has such a high rating as of today. I received this book from a relative when I was 14, and its condescending tone combined with the fact that it tries too hard to be "hip" effectively turned me off to it. Had I receieved "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" I may have read it. Five years later and after reading some glowing amazon.com reviews, I decided to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, my initial impression was dead-on. This book is filled to the brim with vague fluff and moralistic, cliches. Despite that the book is marketed as written "by a teen for teens," Covey writes in a heavy-handed, righteous manner comparable to an authoritarian parent. Covey bludgeons the reader with anti-sex, anti-smoking, anti-anything-the-masses-think-is-bad propaganda. He neither cautions in an objective manner, nor enlightens. Instead, he appeals to vanity, which we know teenagers are full of (*cough*HYPOCRITE*cough*). In his diatribe against smoking, he mentions TERRIBLE side effects like *gasp* bad breath and... YELLOW FINGERTIPS! Let's not forget-- teenagers think they're invincible! They would NEVER take heed if we warned them that smoking causes CANCER AND DEATH. And therein lies the problem with the premise of the whole book: It doesn't give enough credit to the teen population as a whole. It presupposes that most teens are ignorant about life. NEWSFLASH: Time does NOT equal wisdom. S... 4 stars (Insightful!) - Anyone can apply the principles in John C. Maxwell's book, in any business, in any circumstance, in any stage of life. Great thinkers have an unlimited capacity to achieve, and Maxwell tells you how to become one. While books of this nature are typically geared toward entrepreneurs or those in leadership roles, we recommend this book to any person who is committed to ongoing personal development and living life with purpose. You will benefit from learning more about the different specific thinking skills that have an impact on your daily decisions. Maxwell teaches an unusual skill: how to make conscious choices that shape your thoughts, your actions and, ultimately, your success. Think about it. 5 stars (You're thinking right now...right?) - Several years ago, one of the best leaders I know, someone who managed to rise to the top of every organization he was ever in --including the one he currently works for, told me the secret to his success. "Think like a leader," he said. I've often meditated on his words. I've discovered that they are absolutely true... In his book, Maxwell explains how you can leverage the power of your thoughts to acheive unthinkable success: He gives you all the different ways leaders think and then shows you how to do it yourself. Just like my friend said: "Think like a leader." Order this book and find out how. 4 stars (You may not use all of it....) - You may not use ALL of the ideas in this book BUT if you find just one that helps you - then it is worth the investment. I believe each one of John Maxwell's types of thinking that are identified and briefly explained could be individual books all by themselves. The thing I appreciated most about "Thinking For a Change" was that it gave me "just enough" of what I was looking for. My suggestion is to read "Thinking.. " then pick the area you most need work on and delve deeper with other resources. Reading this book, gave me one key concept on strategic thinking wh... 5 stars (Family Lessons From "The Inside Out " ) - Covey encourages every parent to do some soul searching to become aware as to what really is priority in life. Then, he suggests we put "first things first." I believe that most parents would admit that they do wish to have "FAMILY" comes first--above all else. But, in today's busy, often stressful daily routine of life, accomplishing that goal is often "easier said than done". Covey clearly points out the essentials...such as establishing effective communication lines through family meetings and one-on-one talks with the kids. He makes so much sense as he describes with personal anecdotes how love, values, morality, and empathy for others is a process of teaching and learning from "the inside out"...in other words from within the family rippling out to society at large. He talks about establishing a family mission statement and helps to direct moms and dads to find the courage and the skills to make changes for the better. Covey's book creates the mindset and the outline. If you have young kids like me, I recommend a perfect compliment 'how-to book' with Covey's ... called "THE POCKET PARENT." This handy book, written for parents of 2-6 year olds, is loaded with compassion and humor along with over one thousand tips and skills to try. It literally trouble-shoots many of the problem behaviors we all deal with daily-such as Angry outbursts, Bedtime, Mealtime and Clean-up refusals, Tantrums, Disrespectful attitude, the "Gimmes", Morning "Crazies", Sibling fights, Whining and many more. These 2 books (one more theoretical, the other more "hands on" practical) have changed our lives. We now have more peace and cooperation in our family---and that gives us more time to enjoy each other. Consider both books for your home reference library. 3 stars (A Bit Too Sappy For Me) - While this book had some good insights and "a-ha" moments, it was too sappy for me to get past the third chapter. I enjoy a good metaph... 5 stars (Dark magic draws you in (um, like a dark mirror that can trap you for a thousand years!)) - Karen Marie Moning weaves magic with hot highlander goodness. Ah, it's such a nice blend, too. Behind the every day goings on of the world is one where faries tinker and power can weave worlds. This power can be light or it can be dark. Cian, born gifted with power and charged as a guardian of the Sidhe, was tempted by the dark arts. Unfortunatly that kind of stuff attracts unsavory types. Hence Cian has been trapped for hundreds of years in a mirror of dark power. Grad student Jessica St. James, unfortunately, ends up opening up a package for her professor that contains this dark object. Sure, you get a hot guy, but the headache of having to deal with a dark mirror and a psycho dark mage ready to kill for it back. Of course the romance between Jessica St. James and Cian is fabulous. Karen Marie Moning has a talented pen and writes dialogue that is funny and wicked. I really enjoy her world of alpha highlanders and magic. 4 stars (Scottish Delight!) - Oh, if only this book had been longer, I didn't want it to end! But if it hadn't I would have been up even later than 3am. If your familliar with Moning's books you'll know this is a continuation in the Kelter Druid/ Faery series. And after reading the end of this book you find out that there are atleast 2 or 3 more books to come! The dialogue of this novel was so beautiful I may force my husband to read it and learn a thing or two! Cian Kelter is the oldest of our druid hotties yet. A genetic freak born in the 9th century & made laird at birth, he has all the possible magical abilities bred into the Kelter line. Naively he invited another druid into the castle one night, an evil twisted man, and to sum up events Cian ended up stuck in an enchanted mirror perched on his enemies study wall for the past 1,133 years. And he'd have probably stayed there...if the magic that enabled a previous Kelter hotty to serve hadn...
