5 stars (A Book for Every Teacher) - Whether you teach math, English, science, or any discipline in a school, this book will make you a BETTER teacher. In addition, when you apply Tovani's suggestions, your students will IMPROVE. This book is worth taking personal time outside the classroom to read. It will make your time in the classroom more purposeful. 4 stars (Practical, easy to apply strategies.) - This book gave me a lot of ideas for getting students to probe into a text to get beyond basic comprehension of a text to creating personal meaning from text. Her techniques are for every student, the talented and the struggling. The only frustrating thing I found about the book is she assumes all teachers work in ideal environments. She tells teachers to get parents to donate post its for the note taking strategy she uses. Parents at my inner city school would not do this. 5 stars (This book was SO helpful!) - I was assigned this book for a class this semester in my grad program. As a science teacher, I went into the class thinking, "Why do I have to take this class??" After the first day, I went to buy my textbook. That night we were assigned the first chapter. I sat down, to read just that chapter, but ended up reading the entire book. Tovani's style of writing is so easy to read and follow. There are items discussed in the book that you can incorporate into your first day of class, and things to use all year. I feel that with these ideas in place, my students are going to do much better in my class. My eyes are open now to the need for teaching reading in every subject. I would reccommend this book to first year teachers and well seasoned teachers alike. Thank you Ms. Tovani for writing such a great book! ... 5 stars (an awesome intro to atheism) - I was in need of something new to read, especially on atheism, and after I read the reviews for "Atheist Universe," I bougut it. I'm interested in religous questions, so I read a ton of religous books. I also read books on atheism because something inside me is suspicous of religion. So I often enjoy books by clear thinking atheists like David Mills. Now the book. This book is slender (about 240 pages), is neatly organized, and is clearly written (this is the most lucid book on atheism I've read, and Mills has some serious writing talent). All the essentials are here: arguements for the existence of God, as well as their flaws; how morality doesn't need religion to support it; and big bang cosmology (how the universe doesn't need a creator). This last part was helpful, since I'm always in need of a primer on the scientific jargon--something that is often technical and confusing--but which this book dealt with simply and clearly. There are a lot of books on atheism out there, but if one must choose the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the subject, then get this book. You can look at it as the "Cliff's Notes" to atheism, although it's so jam-packed that it could be an encyclopedia. I don't keep many books on my shelf; most go back to the used bookstore. This one, however, is a keeper. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie." 3 stars (Premise to refute all notions of God is absurd) - The premise that Dogmatic Religions are the only religions that define God is absurd and therefore his claim to refute the existence of God is equally absurd. There are several non-Dogmatic religions that work towards the understanding of God and Reason through scientific reasoning on one pillar and archetypal symbolism in the mind's most abstract to bridge a gap to understanding that God resides Within. The oddity most people debate on the existence of God is not whether GOD is infinitely manifested, on all cosmic planes, but whether... 5 stars (you need to want it) - After 15 years of heavy smoking it was the time to quit after my son was born. Whatsoever... it was a hard struggle and whenever i had the urge to smoke i picket up the book from Mr. Carr and it made the desire disappear. I did not use the book to quit smoking. (I did it cold turkey) it was actually not even after three month that i picket it up for the first time. When i had that urge and read a couple of pages it made me realize how stupid it was to ever light a cigarette again. I have not smoked since. It is still hard sometimes but whenever i feel the need to smoke i pick up the book instead. And i tell you. It works. 5 stars (I don't know how but it seems to work!!!) - I smoked for almost 18 years, 12 to 15 a day and never had the courage to have a serious attempt to quit. I tried reducing (I created spread sheets with graphs, daily averages, formulas to calculate rewards, penalties, comparing months, days, hours and all) for more than a year, which was an enormous struggle and did not help at all to reduce my desire to smoke and I think it made cigarettes even more precious for me than they were ever before. Recently, before boarding for a 7 hour flight, I bought a pack of nicotine gums - for the first time in my life. After trying it in the flight and afterwards, I realised it helped me and I didn't feel like smoking that much. So I set a date, stopped smoking cigarettes and started chewing nicotine gums from that day onwards. I was thinking that it was going very good by the help of miraculous nicotine gums and keep asking myself why I did not try them before. In the meantime, I had a tiny question in my mind: will it be also easy for me to quit nicotine gums when the time comes? After 10 days, I realized I don't crave for cigarettes anymore but for gums and took it as a good sign. As a coincidence, I heard about Mr. Carr's "way", seminars and books towards the end of the 2nd week of my attempt and decided to read the book ... 5 stars (Deep Wisdom Practically Explained and Applied) - "Love Talk" is a very practical book that is also very deep. What a rare combination. Far too often we find deep books that are vague and impractical or how-to manuals that are shallow and unbiblical. "Love Talk," as the authors accurately label it, is "a deep yet simple plan full of new insights that will revolutionize communication in love relationships." Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott help couples to go deep by identifying their fear factor (a catchy and helpful phrase)--a soul issue necessary to expose for soul talk by soul mates. They then help couples to go simple (but not simplistically so) by helping husbands and wives to determine their communication styles. They also help couples to go deep by exposing the deep mystery of the male-female relationship, doing so in a way that honors the complex nature of masculinity and femininity. They then also go simple by sharing a "doable" plan for moving husband-wife communication from good to great (another catchy and encouraging phrase). "Love Talk" offers many deep/simple tools such as the Love Talk Inidicator, the Secret to Emotional Connection, and a short course on Communication 101. Two companion his and her workbooks provide exercises and self-test to help couples apply the content and concepts contained in "Love Talk." Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: A History of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." 5 stars (College student) - I got this book because it was required for a class taught by Les & Leslie Parrott at Seattle Pacific University. The class and book are awesome! I'm not married, but I still learned a lot of practical tips for communicating with my future wife (hopefully) and even my friends and family! They truly taught me a lot about the importance of communication & understanding each other...then you'll reach Love Talk! 5... 4 stars (Too Much Freedom and Not Enough) - Adolescent girls probably since the dawn of time have been trying to elude the domineering gaze of their mothers in a time during their development where young females are creating their own identity and discovering who they really are and how they want to portray themselves to others. It's a juncture at which they are even more prone to seek independence and the discoveries of independence--a period when the teenage girl is (or is at least trying to) mature into womanhood. sometimes too quickly. Renowned feminist author Joyce Carol Oates very expertly tackles this issue in her 1965 short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" We're confronted with a young girl named Connie who just wants her own space, a girl who's tired of being told that she just doesn't measure up to her mother's high standard like her sister Jill; a girl who wants some romance--some love (or lust) in her life; an innocent naive girl who wants the freedom to meet and know boys but who is too young to understand that there are "good boys" and then there are "bad boys." Connie goes out at night with her friend and meets a guy. They seem to have a good time together, but it's just one of those things where you have a good time and you wake up the next morning having forgotten much of what happened the night before. Life just goes on. At least that's the case with Connie. But she soon learns that that's not quite the case with the boy she met, named Arnold Friend. When her parents leave for a barbecue, she's left home all alone. She couldn't be happier. Finally she has her space, she has nobody talking down to her or criticizing her, she finally feels that spirit of freeom she so craves, which involves the lack of parental supervision and control. But in a very scary way she soon comes to know that this parental security is actually an important safety net, one that every adolescent needs. She comes to realize that independence has a price, and... 3 stars (A great little book) - This is a great wee book to dip into for a laugh or even for knowledge on absolute trivia. I have placed a copy in the guest bathroom to amuse. Laughter on every page! 5 stars (why do men have nipples?) - A fun and informative book. This is about things you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask, medically speaking. 4 stars (The answers make sense!) - Delightful book, funny and informative. 5 stars (How to be the Leader of the Pack...And have Your Dog Love You For It.) - Excellent service, great condition. I would use them again. 5 stars (Excellent Introduction) - This pamphlet is a wonderful introduction into developing a the leader relationship with your family's canine companion. It introduces the concept of NILIF "Nothing In Life is Free", a positive training method used to place humans in the alpha role of the pack. It is also often used on proven aggressive dogs, but is better to do it right from the start. I would not recommend using the pamphlet as the sole source for training the family dog, but it's an excellent start. A very fast read with easy, understandable language. Highly recommended. Excellent gift for every new dog owning family. 3 stars (Simple instructions but a bit brief) - I didn't learn anything new from this booklet but it covers the basics that a first time dog owner may not know. Its size makes it great to carry around or to pass along to someone who needs it. I found it was easier to give to a friend who's dog rules the house and hopefully it didn't seem too pushy. It seems less offensive if you drop off a simple booklet rather than burying them under a huge book outlining all the things they're doing wrong with a pet. Its great at home too because I can leave this lying around in our living room and certain family members may actually read something this short. However, the fact that its very brief means it should probably not be the only book read on the topic. Hopefully it will interest them enough to go find out more. I'd call it a portable, quick reference guide. ...
