Stories From Hans Andersen

Stories From Hans Andersen . Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. This collection first published in London by Hodder & Stoughton, (1911) Seven children's stories by the celebrated master story-teller with illustrations by the master illustrator of the 19th and 20th centuries. Edmund Dulac was one of the central illustrators of the Edwardian period, he remained true to the medium of watercolor, and the critics were unanimous in their praise...

Experimental Psychology with InfoTrac

5 stars (Great for Excelsior's Research Methods in Psych test....) - Although I never ended up taking the test myself, several people advised me to buy this book, which in fact is the recommended textbook listed on the content outline for the ECE Research Methods test. After skimming though it, it appears to cover what is on the test (according to the outline). But get a used copy, unless you want to pay $100+ for a new one. 4 stars (This book is great!!!) - I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about experimenting in Psychology. Myers and Hansen clearly explain confusing terms and use examples from daily life (when applicable). It is well worth the investment for Psychology majors and can also be enjoyed if you've never had a Psychology course before. ...

Arabic-English Dictionary- The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic

1 stars (make a bigger alfabetics .......please!!) - printing is so poor in this book, itis of a poor quality in reading visibility . The material in the boock can be terrific but unfortunately hard to reach becase they are illegible suggestion " take the same boock and reprint it in a defferent ptinting company that has a cear alfabetics qulit of writing and add more price to it we will by it . waht is the use of a boock if i can't read ? thanx 5 stars (By far the best) - I learned Arabic at the Defense Language Institute where they've used Hans Wehr for some time. At first I must say that it is quite hard to use until you've learned how to derive the root from a word, the alphabet of course, forms of words, and verb measures. Therefore I would definitely advise you to start with a cheap dictionary which is more easily understandable, at least until you learn the basics. Having said that, I have to tell you that anyone who says this is not a good dictionary was most likely just frustrated because they had not learned the basics yet. If you look the reviews, you'll notice that most complaints were from people trying to learn Arabic from the beginning with Hans Wehr. You'll also notice that anyone even remotely familiar with Arabic can't seem to praise it enough. Thats because once you're through learning the root system you are going to realize that the Hans Wehr is by far the most comprehensive and useful dictionary you'll find unless you're studying a very technical or esoteric subject. I guarantee that once you get your foundation in the language and have used this dictionary for a little while, other dictionaries will simply piss you off with how superficial and disconnected they seem. Just give it a little time. 2 stars (A one-way dictionary) - I found this dictionary to be totally useless because it only goes one way, Arabic to English. Which is OK unless you don't know alphabetical order in Arabic. And for the price, you would expect it should be a two-w...

How To Open Locks With Improvised Tools- Practical- Non-Destructive Ways Of Getting Back Into Just A

4 stars (Open Says Me) - This book is an extraordinary manual for emergency entry procedures. The directions are clear and concise, and the numerous illustrations are very helpful. This book can teach you how to bypass a lock with a bottle of bleach -- who knew ?? 5 stars (Far from easy ....) - I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.) The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading. This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. Not for beginers; I bought this book first then came back to it. 4 stars (Just about there.) - personally im only interested in picking locks and this book does help abit, but it focuses more on bypassing security systems and teaches you how. the paragraphing is kinda compact and so are the instructions and diagrams for me- someone with little technical background. a good read for the hot and lazy afternoon or those boring plane trips. ...

The Power of Focus - How to Hit Your Business- Personal and Financial Targets with Absolute Certaint

4 stars (Good book that reinforces solid ideas) - This book is helpful because it reinforces universal principles. I didn't find much new here, but I did overcome some obstacles that had been in my way. If you are looking for a great book, read my favorite, Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self, because and you will rise above mediocrity and the great into the best that life can offer. 5 stars (Your life equals the sum total of your habits.) - I looked thru a few of the reviews about this book and I have to laugh at the review that said this information is for Homer Simpson and that anyone over the age of 10 should have figured it out. I must ask if it's so obvious, why do most people waste time working at jobs they hate, just to pay the bills, living a life of wasted talent and never come close to becoming rich or even more important happiness? If success is so obvious, why do most of us not take the necessary tasks? This book is in my top 5 of over about 280 personal development books I have read. I will agree that the topics are very simple, but extremely effective. We are all blessed with the same number of hours in a day. The ONLY way you will become happy and successful is if you learn to manage your habits, time, and money. Most of us waste many hours of the day doing meaningless tasks. Do you think your doctor would want to mop the floors? NO WAY. Why is it then that most of us feel as if we have to be a jack of all trades and master none? This book talks of specialization and how to make the most of this one time shot called life. This book makes sense of how to get down to the core of self-development which is how to change your habits, which will in turn change your life. If I had to recommend 2 books to anyone, the first would be this and the second would be The Master Key to Riches by Napoleon Hill. 5 stars (Great book) - Too bad our Canadian friend didn't use the book. Page 173 begins the discussion on a winning attitude. There is go...

Big-Needle Knit Afghans

3 stars (Beautiful Ideas - Full of Mistakes) - A beautifully photographed book of afgans for beginning to advanced knitters. How discouraging can it be to start a project, and realize things just don't "add up". If you are a knitter, you know what I mean. I contacted the publisher and pointed out a number of errors in their directions. Surprisingly, they sent me two pages of Editorial corrections, most of them identified by readers. All I can say is, BEWARE, and call the publisher and ask for the Editorial corrections OR you try to figure out if there is a mistake in the directions. Just have fun!! 3 stars (Beautiful patterns, needs better editor) - I love this book. The patterns are beautiful and easy to follow, the pictures are stunning, and I expect to get a lot of use out of it in the coming years. However, I'm working on my first afghan from the book, and there are two mistakes in the pattern. It's on page 52, and the pattern doesn't work unless you cast on 154 stitches instead of 152, and there's a psso missing from Row 11 - without it, the row is a disaster of increasing stitches that would probably result in a giant triangle. I'm about 80 rows into the afghan, which had to be restarted three times in order to work out these typos, but now is coming along beautifully. But it makes me wonder what other typos are in store for me on the other pages. 4 stars (Excellent source book for a variety of afghans) - This book has plenty of afghans in various styles, from Bavarian traveling stitch (difficult) to garter blocks (easy.) All are designed in yarns you can find fairly easily on the Web or Ebay or in yarn shops. The styles also vary from lacy, openwork, to fairisle, to colorblock, to dense cables or texture. So there is a bit of something for everyone. I found the color choices mundane, but with some imagination (or even scanning software followed by image manipulation) you could envision an aqua lace block afghan in a stunning creamy taupe rather tha...

Workouts in a Binder- Swim Workouts for Triathletes

4 stars (A good tool, but with one serious flaw..) - The workouts and the book overall are good, and for the self-coached athlete, much better than trying to think up a workout every day. There are two main sets for each workout, one longer than the other, but they could use more differentiation - one may be 2600 meters and the other 2300 meters. It should be more like 2600 and 1900. Or slip a third option in the middle. Of course, if you are reasonably experienced, it's not had to extrapolate whatever distance you plan to do for the day. But....the flaw...once you get it wet, it's nearly impossible to get it dry again! The pages are waterproof, but they stick together and even a little splash seems to get every page wet. Unless you stand it up and open as many pages as you can, rotating this every couple hours for several days, you just can't get it dry before it starts to mildew and stink. I evn tried putting it in the dryer (on that removable non-rotating shelf) but unless you get those pages open, it won't dry. Two solutions I've found- (1) take off the spiral binding, hole punch the pages (not easy, since the pages are plastic), but it into a binder, and just take a single page for the day's workout to the pool, or (2) keep the whole thing in a big ziploc bag, turning to the page you want first, then zipping it in for the pool. This work pretty well, and keeps you from owning "Stinky Workouts in a Binder". 3 stars (Try The Waterproof Coach) - This book appears to be similar to the Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes published several years ago. The Waterproof Coach has more versatility because it's interior workout pages can be rearranged to create thousands of combinations of workouts. 5 stars (I can't wait to get in the pool again!) - Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes is my new "Most Valuable Tool" for training this season. Bernhardt begins the book by making a concise case for sound, purposefu...
