5 stars (Excellent) - This book was excellent. Recently i have started to get into "memoirs" and Jeannette Walls memoirs was one of the best! Her parents...they give new definition to the word crazy! Jeanette cooked her own hotdogs at the tender age of 3 she was also caught fire by cooking those very same hotdogs at the age of 3...her family was always doing the "ske-daddle" from bill collectors so they were constantly on the move. Jeannete has two sisters and one brother. Her mom is a very eccentric woman who loves to paint and teaches her children to always be "self-sufficient" her father is a drunk but she loves him deeply. They move from town to town all over the mid-west to the west coast. They go from rats being on their kitchen counters and in their sugar bowls to eating "lard sandwiches" at her grandmother Erma's house. This is a book that will keep you interested from start to finish. Never a dull moment. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (Shocking Yet Truly Charming) - I loved this book. The author writes in such a style that enables the reader to absorb the harshness of her tale - without being angry. Her childhood was what it was. As adults, we cannot do anything about a tough or neglectful childhood. I applaud the author for telling it like she remembers it. Best book I have read in a while. 3 stars (Horrifying if True) - There seems to be some doubt as to the veracity of Walls's memoir. It does seem as though certain situations are far too detailed to be credible rememberances of a 3-year-old or even a slightly older child. However, the book is an absorbing read, which is why I gave it three stars. No stars, even as birthday gifts, for the self-absorbed, sick parents who brought their children up in such a lazy, dangerous way (if Walls's account is true). A mother who hides candy from her starving children? Refuses treatment for her burned, blistered daughter? A father who throws the family cat out of a moving car but protests when a mountain lion is... 5 stars (must have for any lamp worker) - this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny. 5 stars (The best book in its class) - If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there. 2 stars (It's Just OKAY!) - To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). 1 stars (Not Worth One Star) - Worst book of all time, sorry guys and gals but whoever wrote and edited this book should buy a book themselves "Learn to Write and Edit by DUMMIES". To many typo's and script errors which did not work! Actually I would give the book a 5 star rating if they changed the name to Trouble Shooting Script Errors, Test Your Skills! 5 stars (Great beginner's book) - This is a great book for beginners. It covers everything you will need to start out and it's written very well - very easy to understand. The appendeces at the end are also wonderful, they cover php functions, mysql data types, etc. Also very helpful is the fact that you can access help forums that are specific to this book as well as downloadable files for every project in the book. I have several other php books and this is by far the best: the easiest to understand, the most comprehensive. 5 stars (Easy to Understand) - I was forced into the world of PHP, MySQL and Apache by my boss, and I wasn't sure which book to get. I chose this book and I thought it was great! I did see a few typos, but in a way it made me actually learn the stuff, instead of blindly typing away and hoping the programs worked. I understood what they were doing and it has made me catch my own mistakes too. For someone who didn't really know what they were doing, I feel like an expert now! And it was nice to have useable applications when I was done- we are actively using several of these now (such as the emailing script and the user/login script- and we have plans to do more). My boss thinks I'm a genius. I was reading these other reviews and while I can't speak for other books, I had no problems with deprecated code (I never saw that "mysql_create_db" function once in the whole book and I've been through most of it already) or the missing sql script from chapter 6 (it was the same database used in chapters 3, 4, & 5.. duh!) so I don't know what's up with these other guys. But oh well to each his own. ... 5 stars (Fast delivery, excellent condition) - This seller shows Amazon buying at it's best. My book arrived in exactly the condition described and in a timely fashion. And...the price was right. Couldn't ask for more. 5 stars (I'm shocked... ) - to see the reviews on this book. I have yet to use my kiln though I've had it for over a year now. I have tons of books on the subject, the first of which was Contemporary Warm Glass by Brad Walker. I do believe that is an excellent beginners book but I didn't find it motivational at all. The examples are basic, just as they should be in a beginner's book. But, I found that every time I headed to my workshop to start a project I was already less than impressed with what I was about to do. I'd get frustrated and leave after cutting a few pieces of glass. I'm a perfectionist which is not a good thing for someone trying to get in touch with their creative side. So, it's difficult for me to start something knowing that I probably won't like what I'm about to do. But, I found after reading "Warm Glass..." I was totally excited again. It is more advanced but it shows you how to do something other than a coaster!! It's finally the inspiration that makes me accept that I need to do a few coasters before I can move up to the more advanced and unique pieces. Not only are the examples really beautiful - the instructions cover it all - even frabricating your own molds. The presentation is exceptionally professional. The examples may assume a basic understanding, but with a little foundation it appears to be a very thorough book. I will now go back and use Contemporary Warm Glass to get started - but I can't wait to try some of the techniques demonstrated in this book! 5 stars (good for learning the basics) - excellent and easy to understand. this book is well written and really helps with learning basic fusing/slumping techniques. 5 stars (Great for beginners and advanced glass fusers) - A great book with a lot of helpful advice. It's not too technical and easy to understand. I've shared it with my other glass fusing peers and each of us learned something different from it. It's a short book and some of the projects are a little outdated but I did great ideas from seeing them. 4 stars (Good basic review book) - If you are just starting out (like you've had a class, get home, and say to yourself "now what do I do"?), this is a really good book to have on hand. It is an older book, true, so some of the kiln options, etc. are a bit dated. But the techniques of finding out if your glass is compatible or the annealing process are still very valid. There's much to be learned from this book, especially if you want the comfort of a good resource on your shelf and available. ... 3 stars (dated) - This is a very old book as far as fiberglass boats go.Must later prcedures,and products not included. There is some usefull info in the book 5 stars (Ready, Set, Fix) - This book was not only very informative, but also a very great read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down once I started. Quickly I now have the knowledge I need to continue my work on my project boat. I would recommend this to anyone looking to work with an old boat of any kind. True enough, some tricks here will save you money. 3 stars (I think there are better books out there . . .) - This is a good book. It is complete, to be sure. For the expert fiberglass repair person, I cannot speak, but it is certainly difficult to read for an amateur. Generally, a bit much to swallow. I think that other books have similar information more elegantly stated. The fault is not with the content, but the presentation. ...
