Talk Now- Learn Polish - Beginning Level

5 stars (Much better than expected) - Ok, I bought about 4 CDS for polish an dthis was the best o all.....this CD was great because unlike "teach yourself Polish"...ALL the talk was in Polish with pictures and English written translation...so you could play it 500 times with NO WASTE at all since you'll keep hearing POlish so much much better than ';teach yourself polish " cd. it was also much better than polish immersion which was an insult. I highly reccomend this CD 5 stars (Fun way to learn some basic Polish words) - This program will teach you to read, write, and correctly speak some very basic Polish words and sentences. It's a great way to get excited about learning Polish. It is however quite basic. You will only learn about 300 words. But you will learn them very, very well. And you will speak them very, very well. The program allows users to listen as two native polish speakers say the same words and phrases. You can repeat these as often as you like. And you can record your own speach and replay it until your pronounciation is correct. You will learn basic words, colors, food items, phrases, numbers, how to tell time, names of body parts, names of things you may shop for, and polish names of various countries. As a bonus you can print out a very nice polish picture dictionary. To help reinforce your learning, there are many games that give you the opportunity to be challenged. These too are rather simple...but they are indeed fun. And finally...you do not need to understand english to use this program as a polish instructional tool, you can choose from 72 different host languages. In my opinion, Talk Now will teach you quicker and better than Pimsluer. When you are ready get the intermediate version of Euro Talk Polish called World Talk Polish. And forget Pimsluer, which is overpriced and over-rated. Same goes for Rosetta Stone and a few others. When you are ready for intermediate/advanced learning, then consider courses such as Colloquial Polish..etc. ...

Universal Principles of Design

3 stars (good design support book) - i found the book to be a good support when approaching a design. it lays out a series of axioms which help the designer to look at various design stratagies at the initial design stages. 5 stars (With absolute certitude a future "classic" design book) - If you want to make some money, I recommend you buy a couple copies of this book now and put them away for 10 years. With absolute certitude the "Universal Patterns of Design" (UPOD) will be a future "classic" design book. There are very few books that fit this category, but this will be one. The author's have done an absolutely stunning job of condensing the patterns format in codifying 210 design principles which human beings need to relate to products and works of art. This book rivals ANY other design work I have ever read. Absolutely highest recommendation. 5 stars (Great Introduction to important themes) - This book is a great introduction to many themes relevant to all form of design. Many references are given for anyone wishing to further develop their understanding of the theme discussed. ...

Contacts- Langue Et Culture Francaises

3 stars (nice book) - I've seen better, but there is very little scribbling in it and that's what counts. Thank you. 5 stars (An Excellent Guide to Introductory French) - This book was used in my French 101 and 102 classes: Introductory French 1 and 2. I really liked it. Although its strength is grammar and vocabulary, it also teaches some French cultures in every chapter. You can learn listening with audio-CDs. But learning speaking is very hard if you self-study (based on my experience). I utilized the workbook and audio-tapes fully. They were very helpful tools to learn. A great collegiate introductory French book! 2 stars (Frustrating.) - Ditto "ashamed" previous. The workbook is difficult to use, and filled with errors. The tapes are frustrating and uneven, switching from too-difficult narratives to too-easy exercises. I've been through 18 chapters and 9 tapes, and can't speak. The textbook itself is better than the workbook and tapes. It is heavy on grammar and verb conjugation. ...

Oggi in Italia- A First Course in Italian

4 stars (A Good Textbook) - This textbook has a few features that are good for the first year student. First, the beginning chapters are mostly in English, introducing only a few Italian words at a time until the student builds up a vocabulary, and then, the lessons are gradually presented entirely in Italian. The supplement and appendix provides a quick reference to noun and adjective suffixes, indefinite adjectives and pronouns, possessive pronouns, and verb conjugations. The vignettes tell little cultural stories that make learning and remembering the material more meaningful. There are also Italian proverbs throughout the chapters that are fun to practice. This textbook is very good to use for refreshing on material. However, like many foreign language textbooks, all instructions eventually are presented entirely in Italian. Without a translated explanation of the assignment, students may not fully understand the exercise. Another problem is that there are many group exercises, so teachers have to watch students to make certain that the students are correctly doing the practice. There is no answer key for students on the exercises. There is also a lot of material covered in the book and it is nearly impossible to complete the entire book within the first year, so teachers need to plan well what types of exercises to do within the classroom and to carefully decide which exercises can later be assigned for outside homework. 5 stars (A Great Introduction to the Italian Language) - As a student of Italian for over 4 years, I returned to the language in college and used this textbook. The text was great...very current and up-to-date with everything Italian. Lab/video manual was a bit choppy but did the job for our listening assignments. Can't comment on the video component for this course set. This text is very similar to Parliamo Italiano! so either textbook would serve a new student well. 5 stars (Benissimo) - Well worth the wait. This edition is th...

Merck Index- An Encyclopedia of Chemicals- Drugs- - Biologicals

4 stars (MERCK'S REVELATIONS) - This edition of "The Merck Index: An Encyclopedia of Chemicals, Drugs, & Biologicals" shows remarkable improvement over its predecessor. Boasting of diverse groups of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it is a success in its own right. There are just plenty to be explored! The book brims with accurate up-to-date information. Pharmacists, Medics, Chemists, Biologists, Physicists, Agriculturists, and many other professionals who work with elements, compounds and mixtures will find this book very useful. It is revised, and is complemented with detailed descriptions, which include molecular formulae, molecular weights, as well as the percentage compositions of constituent chemicals in a compound or mixture. It is a valuable reference tool. 5 stars (Excellent chemical reference!) - This book must be the most organized reference book I have ever used. Its so fulfilling to be able to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it. Includes a common name index, chemical formula index, as well as registry numbers, therapeutic categories for drugs, useful tables, and organic chemical equations. highly recommended! 3 stars (one of those things a chemist shouldn't be without) - While not the first reference book I would recommend for a general library, it is certainly one a library or chemist's office shouldn't be without. This is an encyclopedia, with abstracts on zillions of chemicals. Is this the most authoritative book on the planet? No. If you want that, go read Chem Abstracts. If you want an handy reference which will give you a pointer in the right direction for information on chemicals/drugs/biologics, then this is for you. Got chloroform in your waste water and wondering how it might have inadvertently developed from miscellaneous stuff dumped down the drain? Wow - acetone + bleach powder catalyzed with sulfuric acid = chloroform, with citations. Not always the most useful, but definately a good resource. ...

Alif Baa- Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds

4 stars (Good book, bad DVDs) - This was the textbook for a university Arabic class I took. The book is good, but the included DVDs are awful and annoying. I recommend this book, but suggest purchasing the Instant Immersion Arabic 2-cd set to learn some vocabulary and phrases (for about $9.99). 4 stars (Great for self-study) - I met with a partner daily for an hour each day for 6-8 weeks, and we learned a great deal from this book. It is definitely good enough for self-study. The one problem is that for the vocabulary and cultural activities, it assumes you have a teacher to fill in the details, so we didn't get much out of those. We did learn to read, write, and pronounce all the sounds, and it's terrifically neat that I can now read basic Arabic signs which are in pictures in the newspaper. 3 stars (Workbook #1) - This is a somewhat cumbersome workbook designed for conventional advanced high-school or college-level classwork. I find it to be neither poor nor excellent, hence my rating of "3." It does not seem overly useful for self-study. One comical flaw on the front cover is the listing of the authors in English in an order that does not correspond to the listing in Arabic. ...

501 Spanish Verbs- Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in A New Easy-To-Learn Format Alphabetically A

5 stars ("501" -- !Es necesario!) - Recommended by our excellent Spanish professor (a native speaker), "501 Spanish Verbs" is a "must have" for serious students of Spanish who want to move quickly to learn and expand vocabulary. 4 stars (Spanish 501) - This book is a helpful guide and tool for anyone learning spanish on their own or in a college classroom. 5 stars (A MUST for the Spanish student!) - My son is currently in Bolivia, South America, and requested this book after seeing it at a North American friend's house. He was learning the language, but having trouble with the past tense of the language. I ordered the book, mailed it to him, and now he's learning so much faster. He says he doesn't know how anyone learning the language could do so without this book! The book came to us quickly, so we were able to get it off to him within days of his request - Thanks! ...

Merriam-Webster-s Spanish-English Dictionary

2 stars (Poorly designed screen functions) - Although this dictionary's contents are extensive, the screen functions are relics from the DOS era. They are laborious and clumsy. To find a word for difinition, it has to be spelled perfectly, there's no list of proximations to the word entered. Changing a word selection is also clumsy especially in the thesaurus when the cursor doesn't show up in the entry slot. If someone knows of a better software, I'd sure like to hear cause this thing sucks!! Maria McGowan 2 stars (Good basic reference, lousy interface.) - The definitions and thesaurus cross referencing are very good. The user interface is quite honestly shameful. Software companies got away with this years ago, but there are now accepted standards for windows user interfaces (e.g keyboard short cuts are missing). Integration with Word 2003 is weak. Numerous bugs and exceptions and very slow. 5 stars (Great product with a lot of features) - I had an old version of this software (2.0, I think), which requires Mac OS 9 or classic. This new version runs in native OS X. I agree with other reviewers: the interface is ugly, but it does the job. I like the audio capability. English is not my first language so I find the pronunciation feature indispensable (don't forget to install it; it's not included in the "easy" install option). Another great feature is the "Defining text contains" search. You can find a word by entering the words that are in the definition. What is the word that denotes the noise a duck makes? You can easily find that, of course, ducks "quack," not to mention that you will also find all kinds of ducks -- the blue-winged teal, the bufflehead, the eider -- and all sorts of duck relatives and even duck dishes. You can also find words that rhyme with duck: cluck, guck and many more. Other ways of searching include usage paragraph contains, forms a crossword, homophones, cryptograms and more. I don't understand why these features are not prominently ...

Dos mundos Student edition w- Listening Comprehension CD

3 stars (A LONG WAIT FOR PRODUCT) - I ordered this product on the 3rd of August via expedited (2 day)shipping and it did not get here until the 13th of August!! Class started here on the 15th. The product itself was as it stated, so I can not complain about that. I would not use this shipper unless you have plenty of time to wait. 1 stars (Unhappy) - I was looking for a student workbook for practice in spanish. I ordered this book because it was listed as "like new",it took me almost three weeks to get it and when I did I found the worksheets for the first five chapters were cut out. I am now approaching my first term exam for those same chapters and have no book to review. 5 stars (The Best Spanish Resource I've ever Come Across) - I think that "Dos Mundos" is an excellent resource for both teachers AND students. I disagree that study of the book needs to be accompanied by teacher instruction and supervision. The beauty of the text, in my opinion, is that it makes self-teaching very easy. The grammar section at the back of each chapter is clearly explained in English, and there is a complete vocabulary list at the end of each chapter. The other beauty of the book is that it creates the closest thing to language immerson that you can get out of a book. There are many articles from Spanish-speakers, written in very natural Spanish. As for the person upset about the Mexican Spanish, I can't say that I agree with you. I was pleasantly surprised because the book actually has samplings of the language from all over the Spanish world. But in order to avoid confusion (which would make sense), they stuck to one main form of Spanish - Spain Spanish. I recommend this book for ANYONE - teacher and students (from beginner level write up to the advanced learner) ...

Repaso- A Complete Review Workbook for Grammar- Communication- and Culture

5 stars (Un Repaso Perfecto) - Repaso was used as my school textbook for higher level Spanish courses in high school. Everything is great about it. The instructions are in English which makes it even more compatable. The book is able to review old concepts, but has enough to teach the little proper things about Spanish. It is a great purchase for any student that is just learning Spanish or has been taking it for many years and needs a reference. 3 stars (No Answers Given Here) - Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared. 5 stars (The most complete review around!) - If you had Spanish in high school but it's been a while since you've used it,then this is the perfect book for you! It begins with the simple present tense then progresses to the more complicated preterite and subjunctive. At the end of the book you will find interesting cultural tidbits to enhance your experience of learning the Spanish language. Have fun! ...

Conexiones - Comunicacin y cultura 3rd Edition

5 stars (Great textbook for intermediate to advanced students) - I purchased this textbook 2 years ago because it looked interesting and informative and as Spanish language educator, I believe it is important to keep abreast of the lastest educative material on the market. Not only was I pleased with the content and the grammar topics covered in the book but I was particularly impressed with the cultural awareness themes in every chapter, the thorough explanation of the grammar concepts and the opportunity to prepare and discuss controversial themes in Spanish thus allowing to student to develop his/her vocabulary and speaking skills. This edition of Conexiones is a complete course for intermediate to advanced Spanish students and if studied thoroughly, to completion with a competent instructor, the student will have and above average foundation in Spanish which would be beneficial to his/her future studies in the Spanish language. I strongly recommend this textbook to teachers and students pursuing advanced knowledge in Spanish. ...

Rand McNally StreetFinder and TripMaker Deluxe

1 stars (Rand McNally should have stood in bed. . .) - I don't think a thorough review of this is in order, because YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY IT. While it has some cute features, the main problem is that it DOESN'T KNOW ANY ADDRESSES of anyone I've tried to find. My own house has been here 50 years and the address is not in the program. '1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC' is not there (though 'White House' is). None of my friends' addresses are there. It seldom can even find an intersection ('no match found'). On the other hand, Microsoft Streets & Trips has 90% of the addresses I've asked it to find. Too bad, because the GPS interface on R-M is good and it's exceedingly primitive on Streets & Trips. 4 stars (What program are these people using?) - I am surprised to see the many negative comments on this product. The only issue I have had with it is that my GPS initially did not work properly. This was due to Windows XP recognizing it as a serial pointing device and had nothing to do with the software. I had the same issue with streets and trips. Once I got that ironed out, it has worked perfectly for me. I used it recently to plan a cross country trip and it worked fine. I was able to get back on track a couple of times when I took a wrong turn simply by using the GPS for reference. I see that some complained that you have to be online to use the program but this is not true. You DO need to be online to get current updates on road construction, but this should be done before leaving home where you have internet access anyway, not on the road. I think that perhaps people are expecting a lot from a program that costs less than 50 bucks. Take the tutorials included with the program, plan your trip at home or in the hotel, not on the road and use a little common sense and it will work fine for you. My only complaint would be that there is no option to update the street-level city maps via the internet. 1 stars (Dont Even waste your time with this Software) - Wh...

Medical Terminology for Health Professions

5 stars (Excellent Review Book!) - I used this book for the first semester of medical school. It gives a quick overview of each system of the human body as well as abbreviations commonly used. It's an easy read. A perfect complement for anyone needing a quick, but thorough, medical terminology overview. 5 stars (Most Excellent) - I purchased this book for a continuing ed class, and I'm impressed! Diseases, origin of words, word structure and usage is thoroughly covered and CLEAR. It also serves as a short course on anatomy as well. The writing is easy to understand, never overly technical. Illustrations are colorful and well-designed. The CD-ROM is nothing less than great. Even after the class, I am keeping this book as a reference, along with my Taber's Medical Dictionary. It will be appreciated in almost any setting, whether it be the medical transcriptionist's, billing, medical assistant's, or radiology department. It's that good. 4 stars (A great book, but not without flaws.......) - I love the layout of this book. It makes it easy to memorize new terms and to locate information. There are very useful vocabulary lists at the beginning of each chapter. The learning exercises at the end of each chapter easily help you pinpoint areas that need further study. However, the CD has errors. In the first 2 chapters, I have already found 3. For example, I typed in "histologist" as an answer to one of the questions and it said I was incorrect; that the correct answer was histologist! Then it incorrectly matched the pairs "poster/o" and "in front of, before", which is also incorrect. If you study the material throroughly you will be able to recognize these errors. At first I was also disappointed to find there is no answer key to each of the tests at the end of the chapters, but as is turns out, it just causes me to look for the answers to check myself, which just serves to reinforce the learning process, so I see it as a positive now! I'm still glad I got thi...
