Dantz Retrospect 7 Professional

2 stars (difficulties with Retrospect 7) - I bought Retrospect because of the review in PC magazine. However, it is difficult to use because it uses jargon that I didn't know and which wasn't fully explained early in the manual. I wanted a backup program that would help me if my hard disk crashed, and I'm not sure that this program supplies that. After doing the backup, the program prints out a few sheets that one is supposed to use in case of disaster. Being reluctant to test such a scenario, one is left with a large uncertainty. 5 stars (Pleased) - I found this product to be very well done. It is a bit of overkill for a home user, but well worth the price. I would recomend it to any user from home user on up. 3 stars (Retrospect Back-Up) - Most importantly, USE DVDs to back-up - took way too long & more than 25 CDs. And, now, I'm kind of lost of how and when to edit or update my back-up. I was prompted by David Lawrence (WGN radio) to purchase & install, but for a home personal computer, I think that this is just too much. The $$$ was a bit high, but the labor, CDS, time and confusion was just WAY TOO HIGH. Not real satisfied. Linda Hoffman, Mokena, Illinois ...

Dantz MU10A007000 Retrospect 7 Multi Server with CD - Manual Win

5 stars (Great for businesses with multiple computers to back up!) - There's not much to go by in the item description given here, so visit this page to find out more: http://www.dantz.com/en/products/win_business/index.dtml. The Dantz website says that "Retrospect Multi Server is designed for a business protecting three or more servers. It provides licenses to protect an unlimited number of networked servers, desktops, and notebooks." This software is easy to set up and use, and reliable so you'll know that your backup isn't going to be corrupt when you restore. Lots of people find out the hard way that not having a backup of your computer can be devastating, and in a business environment losing files can be make or break! When I recommend software for my friends, and I sometimes end up doing it AFTER they've lost everything because they had no backup, I recommend Retrospect, and I use it in the non-profits I consult for, who can't afford to replace their archives. Although this software is for Windows, it backs up networked computers running other platforms like MacOS and Linux. Dantz has been around for a long time, and has a great reputation. PCWorld recently said "Retrospect Professional remains the cream of the crop in desktop backup software." You'll be glad you're protected if you end up needing to restore. ...

Retrospect 6 0 Desktop Mac

1 stars (Shameful Marketing, Manual Writing and Software Design) - Over the past two months I've tried to get this software to create two sets of incremental backups of a Mac on two USB2 hard disks. Despite more than 20 years experience with computers, and a successful installation of Norton Ghost 9.0 backup software on a PC, I have not been able to get dantz Retrospect Backup 6.0 Desktop Macintosh to work on my system. I'm sure that a dantz(TM) engineer could sit down in front of the Mac, execute a dozen or so commands and get it to work properly, but that would not in any way prove that Retrospect Backup 6.0 is an acceptable product. The problem of this, and many other software packages, is that there are a huge number of combinations of optional settings that don't work, so if the errors are intermittant, it can take years to debug without proper guidance from the designers. The Retrospect Backup 6.0 backup manual is at least six times thicker than the manual that came with first MacIntosh computers. Its content usefulness is next to zero. The same can be said for the usefulness of the online help menus. The consumer expectation for a desktop backup solution is a single button guiding you through menus and getting the setup done and verified in five minutes. With so much easy-to-use and intuitive Mac and PC software available today, it is next to criminal for the dantz(TM) marketing materials to claim ease of use, especially software written for Mac, where the ease-of-use standard is very high. I recommend that people never buy any dantz(TM) software product. If the CEO feels otherwise, I'd like to hear his/her case and I may reconsider. When they call I will only charge two dollars per minute. 2 stars (Unpleasant to use) - Nobody would give the authors of this software an ease-of-use award. From the outset it behaves as if it were written to please IT specialists and others whose careers depend on things being complicated and incomprehensible to morta...

Retrospect 6 0 Desktop Mac Upgrade

2 stars (Hit or Miss Recovery Software) - I upgraded to Retrospect 6.0 for Mac in hopes that it would be more reliable than the previous version, Retropsect Express 5.0. An attractive feature in 6.0 is that one can use the software to create a specialized driver for one's particular CD/DVD burner. I had hoped that this feature would allow for more reliable backups. Unfortunately, the software is still too sensitive. Sometimes it would write cleanly to my DVD/CD media. Then at other times, the program wouldn't finish -- on the log, the program would say that the write heads were dirty (even for brand new media). I had a situation where the program created a backup to 10 spanned CD-RW's (took most of the day to create), but upon verification, rejected my image copy. If one sucessfully creates an image copy, then that copy is useable to restore from -- I have a set created in April 2004 which I use as my emergency backup. However, there is no guarantee that one can easily create another image copy whenever one needs one, because sometimes the software works and other times, it would say the write heads are dirty. The program does seem to work better with CD-R or DVD-R media and not RW media. ...
