4 stars ( Life-Span Human Development ) - I found the layout of this book very interesting in that it took a portion of the life-span and brought you from infancy to old age. In this way, the natural progression of life could be viewed for each topic. The alternative would be to start with infancy, then go to childhood, adolescence, etc. With the approach of this book, I found tracking each topie, e.g., "Perception," more interesting. 3 stars (Tired Read) - Very dry read. Complicated and confusing order of addressing topics. Reading for my developmental psych class felt like a chore with this book. 2 stars (Choppy, and incredibly dry) - I used this book with a human development course at my university, and it was less than adequate for the job. The book is incredibly bland, and while it goes through the life span in order, it seems to jump around from different people's theories too much. Better if all of Piaget's ideas were presented together for a certain topic, etc.. On top of that, I believe that the method of citing the sources, while it works for research papers, seemed out of place in this setting. Numbered footnotes would have worked better. The method of citation used made it seem choppy, as all of a sudden you'd see a last name and a year in the middle of the text. This could be done more effectively, because the current method definitely broke up the text significantly. Hopefully, some of these changes will be implemented in a future edition. ... 5 stars (Icing on the cake) - This is an entertaining book with good insights on taking law school exams (I particularly liked Fischl & Paul's hilarious debunking of that stupid old IRAC bromide that professors like to give to all those foolish 1Ls). But some Amazon reviewers seem to think that Getting To Maybe is some sort of magic cure-all. It ain't. Unless you have spent a year or two perfecting your writing and analytical skills through continual practice, merely perusing this book will do nothing for you come exam time. If, however, you are already well versed in basic lawyerly analysis, this book will give you an edge. Here's what you need to do in order to score well on a law exam: 1. Extricate the key facts from a fact-dense problem. (Watch out for red herrings!) 2. Spot and specify all legal issues that arise from these key facts. 3. Intelligently apply all applicable legal rules to the issues. 4. Interweave key facts into elements of the applicable rules. 5. Insert appropriate policy discussions that support the rules. (Take notes and study up on each prof's particular hobby horse and demonstrate extensive familiarity with it on your essay exams.) 6. Integrate ALL of the above skills with succinct, first-draft legal writing skills within the allotted time (usually about 50 minutes per problem). Think fast, write fast--and do both well. Getting To Maybe is particularly good at developing point number 5. It is somewhat spotty at most of the others. But what it does, it does very well indeed. And, as far as law-related books go, it's a fun and funny read. So, after you have mastered the basics of black-letter law and learned to think clearly and write well, what this book has to teach you will be yet another arrow in your quiver. Just don't think it's your entire arsenal. 5 stars (Excellent Review Book!) - I used this book for the first semester of medical school. It gives a quick overview of each system of the human body as well as abbreviations commonly used. It's an easy read. A perfect complement for anyone needing a quick, but thorough, medical terminology overview. 5 stars (Most Excellent) - I purchased this book for a continuing ed class, and I'm impressed! Diseases, origin of words, word structure and usage is thoroughly covered and CLEAR. It also serves as a short course on anatomy as well. The writing is easy to understand, never overly technical. Illustrations are colorful and well-designed. The CD-ROM is nothing less than great. Even after the class, I am keeping this book as a reference, along with my Taber's Medical Dictionary. It will be appreciated in almost any setting, whether it be the medical transcriptionist's, billing, medical assistant's, or radiology department. It's that good. 4 stars (A great book, but not without flaws.......) - I love the layout of this book. It makes it easy to memorize new terms and to locate information. There are very useful vocabulary lists at the beginning of each chapter. The learning exercises at the end of each chapter easily help you pinpoint areas that need further study. However, the CD has errors. In the first 2 chapters, I have already found 3. For example, I typed in "histologist" as an answer to one of the questions and it said I was incorrect; that the correct answer was histologist! Then it incorrectly matched the pairs "poster/o" and "in front of, before", which is also incorrect. If you study the material throroughly you will be able to recognize these errors. At first I was also disappointed to find there is no answer key to each of the tests at the end of the chapters, but as is turns out, it just causes me to look for the answers to check myself, which just serves to reinforce the learning process, so I see it as a positive now! 3 stars (Helpful for the novice?) - Of all the english Bibles I will only give five stars to the KJV. It saddens me how many different versions abound in the english language, NRSV, NIV, NKJV, AB and more and all the feud around it. True many think they need the current english written language to undertake the reading of the Holy Word. I own several english versions and study Bibles. It has confused me to the point, that I now have started studying ancient Greek, to read the words of the Apostles and Paul as they spoke them. It does not mean I will not use those many versions to clarify and compare the meaning when I am in doubt. But I am sometimes afraid of become a Pharisee, a scolar of the Word, with an empty heart for our fellow brothers and sisters, one of the greatest sin. 5 stars (Outstanding) - The book was in excellent condition and I received it in plenty of time for my class. 5 stars (Like buying a fresh set of eyes) - Forget what you know about how easy the Bible is. Forget how simple it is to boil the Bible down into a practical lifestyle for today. Here is the Bible in all its historical complexity, in a rigorous and dependable English translation. This NRSV is, in many ways, quite accessible: It is well designed and cleanly arranged. The detailed notes and scholarly chapter introductions help break up big questions into manageable pieces. For Protestants like me, this is especially helpful when it comes to the Apocrypha. Also, at the sentence level this is an approachable and even warm translation. The "N" in "NRSV" means no "thees and thous" to trip over, as well as the elimination of gender biases not found in the original Greek and Hebrew. In other ways, this edition is very challenging. Gone are the "Apply This!" tips from your Evangelical pals. No one's explaining why Nehemiah is a good example of leadership, or the church today can take heed to Paul's letter to the Romans. 5 stars (Excellent Overview) - For those just getting started in the world of art, this is a wonderful overview. It covers at a high-level the major achievements and associates those achievements with the culture and/or history of the time. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (The Best Start) - I am starting my first Ar History class this fall, and I was a bit lost on what to expect. I bought this and gained more confidence in the subject. The text is easy to understand and full of information along with interesting facts. It's far from a bore to read and gets into just enough so you'll have an understanding of the overall history. 4 stars (A easy-to-understand layout makes art history comprehensible for all!) - When I was a senior in high school (this would be 1999), my AP Art History teacher actually listed this book as a required text. He said that it would help to clarify any murky concepts, and he was right. I used this book to supplement our more academic art history texts. Between "The Annotated Mona Lisa" and episodes of Sister Wendy, I was able to more fully understand the historical context of art in a non-esoteric, humanistic way. (I also passed the AP exam, but that's because I had a great teacher. Thanks Mr. Marcucilli!) I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a little perspective on the past, and have a good time while doing so. It touches on key points in art history and gives you the right amount of useful information... granted, the focus IS primarily on Western art; in the near future I would love to see a similar tome for non-Western arts as well. ... 4 stars (Too Much Freedom and Not Enough) - Adolescent girls probably since the dawn of time have been trying to elude the domineering gaze of their mothers in a time during their development where young females are creating their own identity and discovering who they really are and how they want to portray themselves to others. It's a juncture at which they are even more prone to seek independence and the discoveries of independence--a period when the teenage girl is (or is at least trying to) mature into womanhood. sometimes too quickly. Renowned feminist author Joyce Carol Oates very expertly tackles this issue in her 1965 short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" We're confronted with a young girl named Connie who just wants her own space, a girl who's tired of being told that she just doesn't measure up to her mother's high standard like her sister Jill; a girl who wants some romance--some love (or lust) in her life; an innocent naive girl who wants the freedom to meet and know boys but who is too young to understand that there are "good boys" and then there are "bad boys." It helped me judge which dog was right for my family. 5 stars (Great Reference Book on Dog Breeds) - This book features profiles and beautiful color photographs of more than 150 dog breeds, including information about AKC standards. The book also rates the different breeds for such tendencies as energy level, playfulness, ease of training, watchdog capabilities, heat tolerance, etc. (summary by South Texas Library System) You may not need this on your bookshelf at home, but do consult it at your public library before choosing a dog. It's sad to see the wrong breed suffering because it's too active, not good with children, etc. Many behaviors are inherent in a breed and it's a mistake to ignore that. 5 stars (Best dog breed book ever) - If you just want to read about different dog breeds, or if you want to know which breed is best suited to you and your lifestyle, this is the book to buy. 5 stars (For a great sport management foundation, read and learn this) - I am a junior at the University of Massachusetts, and I had the opportunity to read and study this book for my Sports Management class this past spring. It was a great experience and served as a great foundation for my education in the sport management field. The book touched upon every aspect in which a sport management professional in one capacity or another may be inclined to deal with.
