3 stars (ok) - the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated. It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners. 3 stars (Book NOT in Good condition.) - Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books. 5 stars (Best Textbook I've Ever Read) - I would like to find Neil Carlson and shake his hand. This is is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of using. I'm in my senior year of studying cognitive sciences and so far I've had two courses that used this book. When studying for exams in those course I simply read the relevant chapters. The material is concise, well-organized, summarized just when you need it to be summarized, pockmarked with occasional interesting tidbits and stories, just to keep you interested. Every once in a while there's a small terminology box to refresh your memory on the terms you've just encountered. Simply put, it's a book that makes studying the (rather complex, actually) subject of physiology of behaviour easy. If you need this book for a course, I heartily recommend you buy it instead of just borrowing from friends. I'm not sure why you would want to buy such a book for non-academic purposes and just to read it for the hell of it - but if you do - it's a book that supplies a lot of information in a very easy to digest manner. Two thumbs up. Good job Dr/Prof/Mr/Whatever Carlson... ... 5 stars (Love this book) - I borrowed the 4th ed. of this book from a friend of mine to write up a lecture on synaptic transmissions. It was the clearest, most well-written physio psych book I think I've ever seen. Usually when psychologist try to write about biology they end up doing things like describing neurons as "a fluid-filled balloon" (no joke. Actually saw that in my intro textbook), but Carlson is clear yet intelligent. I would definitely recommend this book and hope to use it in my classes in the future. 4 stars (basic physio psych text) - I am an undergraduate neuroscience major at Univeristy of Massachustts, Amherst, and I had the author of this book , Dr Neil Carlson, as my professor for both the undergrad and grad level of Physiological Psychology course. We used the slightly more advance book called "Physiology of Behavior," but they are both basically the same. I am now a TA for the course, so I know the book pretty well. It is written in exactly the same style as he lectures. This probably because the book was originally developed from notes he used to hand out, which you can tell when reading the book. He has little personal comments inserted in paragraphs; he writes in the first person; he has strange analogies; he sometimes jumps from subject to subject; but overall, the book is quite good. The best things about the book are the diagrams and the cd. They very clearly illustrate exactly what he's discussing, and make the subject at hand easier for students to understand. As for the breadth of the material covered, it seems to be quite wide. He starts off with the basics, like neuron structure and brain anatomy, but then quickly moves on from there to sleep mechanisms, eating behavior, learning and memory, etc. The concentration of the book is on the effects of hormones on the brain and our behaviors resulting from those effects. I would recommend taking some introductory biology courses before trying to tackle the book; my psych major friend ... 5 stars (Excellent book but could use a better index) - This book is OUTSTANDING. America's Test Kitchen is like the Consumer Report's of recipes and cooking products. I enjoy learning WHY certain products and techniques work. They try and try until they get a particular recipe to be the best it can be. Then they share what they learned. The one disappointing aspect of this book is the Table of Contents and indexes. For example each "chapter" contains several recipes, but you have to go to the chapter in order to see what all the recipes are within that chapter. But the book is so very excellent that I can forgive this flaw. 5 stars (But use your own judgment) - I absolutely love ATK and buy all of their books. The techniques they present are top notch and as close to bulletproof as you can get. I find the spicing a little mild for my tastes so I usually amp that up a bit. Tasting results are the aggregated opinion of several people so some of the more unusual flavors you might get a kick out of may be rounded out in the math. 4 stars (An Excellent Companion to The PBS Series.) - America's Test Kitchen Live is up to the franchise's usual standards. If you are a fan of the PBS series you will want these faithfully produced scripts for the TV version. The recipes are well perfected to make sure the home chef can produce consistent mouth watering results for family and friends. If you have ever tweaked a recipe until you got it just right, you will love the approach of Chris Kimball and company. They save the home cooking enthusiast a lot of time and energy by doing the tweaking for them. The products tested in this volume range from infomercial gadgets to common necessary kitchen tools used under a range of conditions. The pretty well detailed test results not only offer the best and worst culinary utensils in any category but a lot of the near misses along with their costs. In many ways the text version of these product exams are better than their vide... 5 stars (Important text, but not for beginners) - One thing to understand about this book - it was not written with amazon.com beginners in mind. It is a college-level theory textbook, and is probably one of the few books that present basic theory concepts in a coherent, unified fashion. The "restrictions" some reviewers complain about, are actually part of a time-honored approach to teaching theory (think "species counterpoint"). To understand the book, a teacher needs to understand something of the ideas and approach of Heinrich Schenker (Schachter was one of Schenker's students). Unlike many theory books, which are into quick summaries and labels, this book is based on a deep understanding of how western tonal music works (at least from the Schenkerian perspective). Even basic concepts like scale degrees, intervals, and triads, are presented in such a way that important relationships among tones become evident. Chords are not merely chunks of notes that deserve a label, but are part of a larger, contrapuntal whole. Sticking with the early chapters, and especially getting a good grasp of the contrapuntal nature of even the most basic chords (insights gained into the similar "passing chord" functions of the V4/3 and viio6 chords, for example) are well worth the effort. Upon successful completion of the first 10 or 11 chapters, a student should have a new understanding of how tonal music works. 5 stars (A very strong text teaching the foundations of tonal music) - When I was a student at the University of Michigan School of Music in the late seventies and early eighties, we used the then brand new first edition of this book. I thought it was quite good then, and I believe this third edition to be an even better book. It treats the subjects of tonal harmony and voice leading quite well. There have been some solid improvements in the way a few things are explained and some changes in the musical examples. However, it is still fundamentally the same soun... 5 stars (Same Book Used by our School District) - This is the same book used by our public school district. We are in one of the leading districts in the nation. The only negative I have is the price. I found it new at Walmart>Books>Textbooks for a lower price. Even they are higher than the publisher's price. Buy it here if you have confidence in your seller. I won't! 5 stars (Fast and easy, a great way to learn!) - En Espanol is a great way to learn spanish. Its chapters are set up in an easy, logical order. There are lots of review exercises and the set-up is appealing. Not only do you learn basic vocab, there are sections on culture and history. The pages are bright and are geared toward middle/high school aged kids. At the end of every chapter there is a vocab list compiling all the new words from the chapter. It also contains a Spanish/English, English/Spanish dictionary in the back for easy reference. En Espanol makes learning spanish fun and easy. ... 5 stars (Excellent Book!!!) - Wow, excellent book!!! I have had four German shepherds altogether, (now currently three), and I was able to find very helpful information inside this book. I don't know how I've been without it all these years. Of course, it won't replace a veterinarian; however, it does give you a heads-up on what is going on & what a possible remedy would be. So far, it's been very accurate! 5 stars (This book is super!) - I can't begin to say how often this book has come in handy. I have had to look things up for my three dogs as well as numerous friends and their pets. It gives me peace of mind in some cases and has me rush my pets to the vet in others. It's like having a vet right there in the house with you. I love it so much I'm getting more as Christmas gifts for my friends with multiple dogs. 5 stars (Great resource for canine mommies and daddies) - This book is chock full with useful, easy to understand information. I am not a vet or a vet tech and I find this book very "layperson" friendly. It discusses all aspects of the dogs well being, physically and emotionally and also provides links to veterinary organizations and their websites. One of my favorite sections of the book is the step by step guide to trimming a dog's nails and how to avoid the dreadful "quick" vein and also how to take care of a boo-boo if one occurs. 2 stars (good gift) - I bought this for myself, but would not do again. A much to large tome, very confusing at times and boring. Maybe for a serious farmer it MIGHT be interesting, but for the average consumer it is to dry and boring. I find myself using it as a reference on a rare occasion for some recipe related item, but mostly collecting dust. Might be donated to the local public book source soon, not worth the shelf space in my opinion. Spend your precious cash elsewhere. 5 stars (Country life) - Great information for anyone wanting to get back to the basics, Carla has mastered the country life, mixed with family, experience and farmlife passion. 5 stars (Something for everyone) - Ignore the title....this is a must-have for every home. Ms. Emery doesn't just tell you how to live off the land or live simply. She gives cooking/canning info, gardening advice, how to select-care-for-butcher livestock, care for the sick, housekeeping advice, even how to deliver a baby. 5 stars (Great ) - THis game was so much fun! it is long but one of the best games i have ever played! 5 stars (Secrets Can Kill (12 year old)) - I've read the book on secrets can kill, it's very good, surprisingly the game was as good! You're undercover Nancy Drew trying to solve a mystery at a small high school in Florida, with a big murder mystery of a boy named Jake, your contact is Daryl, there a puzzles to solve and you'll find each of the suspects have a secret, later in the game you'll find out that Jake silenced them by making them be his servants. Anyways I didn't really have much patience as a detective (it would take me hours just to find the clues) so i usually go for help from the websites, uhs is a really good one, it just tells you where the puzzles are and what you have to do to get to the end but it doesn't totally help you figure out the puzzles, and it doesn't tell you who the murderer is. Anyway I really enjoyed this game it's the second Nancy Drew game I've played besides final scene. WARNING: the characters are two d, i know very disappointing but it's still a very good game. Well I won't give any clues away so you'll just have to figure them out :) (or get some online help ;)) Find the murdererm but don't get murdered yourself, and if you do there's always a second chance. 5 stars (secret of the scarlet hand is very GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) - I love the nancy drew games they are always really good and this 1 was 1 of the best!!If get this nancy drew game u will not be dissapointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...
