5 stars (A book for everyman) - By everyman I mean, of course, men and women, young and old, retired and working, republicans and democrats, believers and non-believers. This is a book I wish I'd found years ago (before it was written)! Almost everyone lives the divided life. (I suspect the Dalai Lama does not). As Palmer notes, sometimes we have to -- this is a choice we sometimes must choose to make. One of the reasons I love this book so is that Palmer does not have rigid judgmental expectations of us (we probably are harsh enough on ourselves). He offers guidelines and explanations for the human condition, and some help on getting through. Parker Palmer takes a long time Quaker practice -- the Clearness Committee - and uses it to provide for everyone a Circle of Trust. This mutual support network is unusual -- it isn't an advisory committee but more support for listening to that inner voice which we may joke about, but which exists (you know, the one you should have listened to, that nagging feeling, that annoying little warning sign). One thing that makes us crazy is the denial of that inner voice, our true self, the divided side of self that knows the questionable aspects of our work life, the one we hush up so we can get by and make a living. This isn't just a teacher's issue or a spiritual issue. For some it may be a spiritual divide; for others, a more humanistic one. In any case, we become emotionally, mentally and otherwise unbalanced if our day to day movements and choices feel separate from -- or in conflict with -- our beliefs and values, and yet we deny that they are so. We do not allow ourselves to hear that inner voice, afraid of the changes we might have to make. We smush it down, despite knowing intellectually that anything you smush down in one area pops up in another. This book offers recognition of this conflict we are in, and gives us ways we can listen without, necessarily, having to make changes that will make us walk ou... 4 stars (The Real Truth) - I think this is a good book for those people who are willing to take a deep look at themselves. I didn't agree with everything in the book, but many of the points that were made were eye openers. It might help, as well, for the less scholarly reader to have the workbook because a list of relevant scriptures aren't as readily available in the book. 3 stars (Almost great) - When I saw a book called "lies women believe" I thought my prayers had been answered! This book would have been ideal if they had left it at that but they had to go and spoil it with the nonsense about the truth that sets them free. A shame. 4 stars (Potentially Life Changing Book) - I had been a longtime listener to Nancy Leigh DeMoss's radio series (Revive our Hearts) on WAVA in the DC area and I finally picked up this book after hearing her talk about it for a long time. I loved the simple language and her forthrightness in going right to the heart of many of the 'lies' we believe today. And this book really hit home for me. I had known for some time that as Christians we are called to follow a different path than those who would live exclusively in the world and follow worldly ways. But no one before had ever specifically come out and said "When you buy into the American consumerist mentality that more things will make you happy, that is Satan speaking! That is a lie -- that you can find fulfillment in things! Only God's grace is sufficient for you! Christ alone can make you happy and to some degree, you will always feel unfulfilled until that day that you come home to His heavenly kingdom. Only there will you feel completely fulfilled." I absolutely LOVED the literary device that she used throughout the book. She starts each chapter with a letter from Eve to her friends, talking about the difficulties she has encountered since being thrown out of the garden of eden -- the difficulties with the children, the difficulties with her husband, her feelings of ... 4 stars (Comparison with Finale) - I'm a Finale user who was tempted by Sibelius's competitive upgrade offer. After playing around with Sibelius 4 versus Finale 2006, I can offer some observations. As an initial one, both programs are excellent and neither has serious flaws. (1) Sibelius is simpler to learn and to use, and is probably a quicker tool for inputting scores. Its default settings print out a prettier score than Finale and are generally "correct." Both programs can produce beautiful scores. (2) Finale ultimately seems to offer more power and control, or at least in Finale it is easier to figure out how to override default settings. The flip side of this is that it seems to take longer in Finale to set up a final polished score. (3) It is harder to compose directly at the computer using Sibelius than Finale, because Sibelius locks in notes in a way Finale doesn't. It is easier to move notes around in Finale than in Sibelius -- e.g., if you want to find out how a line would sound if it came in an eighth-note later, this is easy in Finale but hard in Sibelius. (4) Sibelius is packed with music-ed tools that would probably be great for students and teachers but aren't of value to professional musicians. (5) Both programs include play-back features, but neither can compare with even a basic dedicated sequencer program. (6) On balance, I would lean to Sibelius for generating printed scores, while Finale (once learned) is a better composing tool. ... 1 stars (why???) - why oh why did i buy this. that was really stupid. if you want a program that crashes your computer everytime you try copying something then this is perfect for you. if you just want to back up dvds that you have in your collection then i recommend dvd cloner 2 which you have to download, but it has the decoder. i wish i would have found that program before i found this stupid thing over at an electronic store. the box should have said BEWARE, THIS PRODUCT IS CRAP AND WE WILL RIP YOU OFF! 1 stars (A scam) - About the worst product I have ever purchased for my computer. I wish I'd read some reviews first. It basically locks up in Windows XP when you insert a commercial DVD. Not only that, but you cannot kill it through the Task Manager (if you run Task Manager before starting Easy DVD Copy) - and even worse, you cannot invoke Task Manager after starting Easy DVD Copy and it locks up. You cannot even shut down or reboot at this point. You have to pull out the power cord from your computer to get Roxio to stop running. So, this is about the most inexorably invasive non-functioning program I've ever run on XP. The only DVD I could copy was the DVD the program was distributed on. I hope I can get a refund as it's really worthless. 1 stars (not worth a dime) - This item is not worth the money you have to pay for it. Not even a dime. It says you can copy from dvd to hard drive or to disc. it LIED it can only copy from cd to cd. Save your money. 5 stars (Outstanding!) - I've used Cakewalk, Voyetra, Finale, and virtualy every other music publishing program and this is the first one that I can say is worth every penny. The functionality, convinience and versatility of this program goes unmatched and the look of your scores in the end is so good that people will swear you were published by Hal Lenard! If you're a student who hopes to make composition your future, invest in this program. If you're an established composer who is using some other program, dump them and move to Sibelius. I've only had my copy for two days and I'm a devoted consumer. 1 stars (Flashy, crappy and frustrating) - As a long time user of Sibelius 1.4 I looked forward to Sibelius 3. I have always been very happy with the older version of Sibelius - it is easy to use and the results are very pleasing. Sure, there were some limitations and a few improvements could have been made, but overall, Sibelius 1.4 was a great resource for musicians, composers and arrangers. Now what is wrong with Sibelius 3? I think that the question should be "What is right with Sibelius 3?". I don't know where to start? Let me just say that unless you're after a "quick fix" for score making, this product is inferior and inadequate. If you're making scores of Baroque or Renaissance music with Sibelius 1.4 and you're thinking of upgrading to Sibelius 3, forget it! Stick with what you have or consider Finale or some other music score making system. Sibelius 3 is a waste of money. 5 stars (This is terrific music notation software) - Sibelius 3 is music notation software that not only grows on the musician, but with the musician. It has tremendous possibilities, very advanced features, a multitude of choices. It is essential to learn the shortcuts from the outset - mouse manipulation is irritating, as with other music software, but working with shortcuts produces miraculously quick results.
