The Surfer-s Guide to Costa Rica

5 stars (Excellent book) - this is a great book if you are going to costa rica, it has great detail and maps, nothing to detailed but it tells you what maps to buy, would reccomend 5 stars (If you surf, don't even stop to think about it...just buy it) - It's nearly impossible to put a price on the value of the information in this book if you surf. So at $21, it's an absolute steal. The book is simply crammed with detailed, up to date information on where to surf, stay and eat in Costa Rica. And in a country that's tough to get around, Parise's information can save you tons of wasted travel time. I can't recommend this book enough if you're planning a trip to Costa Rica to surf. Trust me...you'll be thankful to have this incredibly informational resource in your possession. 4 stars (indispensable for the serious tico surf traveller!) - it is written in common parlance, and therefore it is easy to understand. I can tell when reading this that the author speaks from experience. he mentions many things to avoid, and important handy tips that will make your surfing stay much more enjoyable. he also realizes the importance of getting as much "surf time" as possible by delineating routes that will minimize the time driving, and maximize time in the tube. also it is written in a lighthearted fashion that reminds you that you are on a surf trip, and helps you forget the stresses of being in completely different country. on the downside, there are a few comments in this book that are not the most considerate. for example, this book somehow assumes that the reader is a man and tackles the subjects of jock itch, balls (testicles), and lugging your girlfriend/wife around. a female friend who surfs found this aspect a tad inconsiderate. however, these trespasses are a mere annoyance, which does not discredit this from being an overall very good book. ...

The Encyclopedia of Surfing

5 stars (A top pick for any interested in the fine art of surfing) - Matt Warshaw's Encyclopedia Of Surfing is a top pick for any interested in the fine art of surfing. From different surfboard developments and the history of different cultures involved in the surfside sport, to legendary surfers and their achievements, the Encyclopedia Of Surfing is packed from cover to cover with "user friendly" A-Z reference material. 5 stars (Like Surfers Journal... almost) - I surf almost every day and can never seem to quench my thirst. My favorite read, by far, of all books and periodicals is The Surfers Journal. It truly captures the many angles of the sport. This book is somewhat in the same vein. It's exhaustive, comprehensive and true to the roots. If you love the history of the sport buy it. If you read Surfing, have never ridden more than one type of board or never traveled to pursue a new wave... don't (do those things instead... THEN buy it). Good bedside book... alongside my Bible. 2 stars (Really IS and Encyclopedia) - For the record, let me state that I've been surfing for 20 years and got the bug, along with most others my age, watching The Endless Summer and getting captivated by the energy and beauty of the sport. This compilation, while very complete, really IS an encyclopedia...page, after page, after page. There are some useful tidbits of information strewn among the lengthy volume but a large majority of the book seems filled with fairly uninteresting, small, black and white photos, and biographies of just about anyone in the world who ever attempted to stand up on a board. Avoid this snore-fest and put your money into a nice hardcover coffee table book filled with glorious color shots of the world's tube riders...and leave all of the trivia to the wannabes. ...

Taj Burrow-s Book of Hot Surfing

5 stars (Great) - This is hands down the best book on surfing I have ever read. Lots of helpful photos and explanations. Highly recommended. 5 stars (Great Book from a Great Surfer) - Great info that goes far beyond the regular "Learn to Surf" books. A lot of Taj slang & surf jargon but those who've been surfing for some time can really benefit from the advanced techniques & descriptions from a pro. Also a very fun book with insight by shapers, surfers, & Taj himself. Developiing surfers need more good books like this. ...

Surf Book

1 stars (surfbook) - no text to explain why these pictures are surf related. hardly any actual surfing pics at all. 5 stars (Top Shelf ) - Perhaps the best coffee table book of portraiture and short commentary of some of surfing's more interesting characters that I've ever come across. Joel Tudor's copy is really enjoyable: brief, fundamental and insightful; the subjects all being either friends, mentors or acquaintances of his, you come away understanding that the book was written as a labor of love as opposed to an assignment. Michael Halsband's photos are wonderful - very natural - not contrived or coerced. I discovered that the book took 6 years to produce, but it sticks together with a visual cohesiveness. I know that there's a lot of surf-related books available these days. I had a hunch that this one was different and it is. Well worth owning. A must for collectors of the genre. Buy it -- I did. ...
