How to Read the Bible Book by Book

2 stars (dissapointed...) - i could only read an hour of this. the 1st 3 chapters are on the bible code. the rest is probably just as bad. 5 stars (The Bible as a Whole) - I was exposed to this book as I was visiting Regent College and talking with Gordon Fee in his office there. It was about a week prior to the release of the volume and he was excited about it. Dr. Fee pointed out that this was actually mainly his own project and Dr. Stuart acted primarily as a consultant for the Old Testament material. He explained his vision in very canonical terminology. He wanted to create a reader's guide to the Bible as a whole and explained that this is more of a one-person project in order to give the book unity. Verses are descibed in relation to surrounding passages. These passages are included in the individual book of the Bible. The books are a part of larger section of Scripture (e.g., Genesis is part of the "Narrative of Israel in the Biblical Story"). These sections combine together to make the whole of the Bible itself. There is an overview to the whole Biblical story and one for each section. The chapters about the individual works of the Bible have the following setup (using Genesis as an example): ORIENTING DATA FOR GENESIS -Content (brief synopsis) -Historical Coverage (estimation of time the events take place) -Emphases (short list) OVERVIEW OF GENESIS (few paragraphs to summarize material) SPECIFIC ADVICE FOR READING GENESIS (a page or two of advice) A WALK THROUGH GENESIS (divides the book into sections and gives short commentary on each section) The chapters end with a brief concluding paragraph which reiterates the books role in the whole of the Bible. This book is extremely accessible for the layperson wanting a guide to reading the Scriptures. All too often verses and passages are used apart from their biblical story and this guide is a wonderful reminder of those dangers as well as a helpful tool in changing our perspective. Of course it is hel...

The Lutheran Handbook- A Field Guide to Church Stuff- Everyday Stuff- And the Bible

4 stars (great read) - good intro to the religion for curious readers. also very humorous for those who are lutherans! 5 stars (This is a Fascinating book!) - What a great little book! Anyone negotiating the Lutheran church (especially the ELCA) will enjoy it as it covers, in a concise and occasionally humorous manner, all the things you need to know, want to know and already know about the church. I particularly enjoyed the simple way the Reformation and Martin Luther were presented. It is packed full of interesting items such as: Comparative religion History of the church Anatomy of a Baptism How to receive communion How to stay awake during the sermon How to share your faith How to identify a miracle What to bring to a potluck The top 10 Bible miracles and their meanings The five biggest misconceptions about the Bible The list goes on and on. There are also illustrations, maps, diagrams and other essential tips. This is informative and fun and a book you'll want to keep and give as a gift. Armchair Interviews says: You don't have to be a Lutheran to enjoy and receive benefit from this book. Actually this is a light-hearted look at all things Lutheran. Frankly it is wonderful -- and it's a hoot! 4 stars (Short, sweet chapters get the point across . . . the basics of Lutheranism) - I love this little book! Modeled on the "Worst-Case Scenario Survival" handbooks, it covers basic Christian tenants with a focus on Lutheranism. It's published by Augsburg Fortress, the publishing arm of the ELCA, however it's not overtly ELCA (I think LCMS and WELS Lutherans could appreciate it also). It's probably geared to young adults, but anyone can benefit from it. It covers important basics in a clear, concise way and, in many cases, with a light-hearted tone. It's refreshing to read the chapters about things you've known all your life, like how to pray. The chapters covering the seasons of the church year, comparing various denominations, 60 essential Bible stories, and ...

The Message- The Bible in Contemporary Language

5 stars (Clear and inspiring) - Peterson's rendering of the Bible is fresh and insightful. The verses' numbers being in the margin, enable me to look up specific verses and yet read passages as more complete thoughts. 5 stars (think) - Too many Christians forget what is was like to be new in the faith. Remember when the bible was total confusion until your priest or pastor shed some light on the subject being discussed? This book kept me focusing on spiritual issues instead of a mystery novel when I was a baby Christian (at age 40) and confused. What would you rather have you kid reading, "The Message" or more 'instant messaging'? I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Christianity. It is not meant to replace the bible. It is meant to draw you back to the bible with more clarity. 1 stars (Read's like a childrens book) - Ok, if you have a very small vocabulary and don't like to get the exact meaning of things but like to get an overall idea of what is going on, then this book is for you. It's so paraphrased that is honostly upsets me. It seems like it's not even really the bible. Passages and stories are designed to read like modern day times, but the only problem is that this stuff isn't modern day at all, and isn't supposed to be. I don't suggest it unless you've never read the bible before and are in elementary school. ...

The Maker-s Diet- The 40 Day Health Experience That Will Change Your Life Forever

5 stars (Excellent) - The Maker's Diet book is not just "another diet book". First, this book is a guide to a change in overall eating habits and wellness for life. There IS a 40 day plan to follow to initially detoxify your system, and get on the right road to being healthier, however, this plan extends well past the 40 days. If you want a quick fix, extremt weight loss, simple book, this is not the book for you. If you want to look better, feel better, enhance your life from more than just a physical standpoint, and achieve your best possible total wellness- then buy this book! I have read the book, cooked the recipes, and done the 40 day plan. I have changed my eating habits, and my overall health in a relatively short time. Has it been easy? No. But is anything worth doing, really worth doing, easy? No. If you are tired of looking in the mirror and knowing you are not healthy, whether overweight, sickly, poor skin, etc- then try this plan- try it for 40 days. You can do anything for 40 days right? Yeah, you definately can. You will be glad you did. Your body will be glad you did, and anyone who knows you will see a difference. If you need to lose pounds- you will. If you need better health- you will achieve it. If you just want to feel better- that will happen. Remember- garbage in/garbage out. This book will guide you to replace garbage with good...good in/GREAT out. Here's to your health! =) 5 stars (Food for living as recommended by our designer!) - Jordan had advanced Crohn's Disease and was literally starving to death until he went to our designer Himself and looked in the Bible for God's widom regarding what our bodies can and cannot handle. He gained weight and got healthy using this diet; I was over-weight, but lost weight and got healthy using this diet. It comes complete with pages of "real food" recipes like "Easy Smothered Salmon", "Chicken with Oregano and Mushrooms", and "Family Roast Beef" for starters. There are recipes in this book for eve...

The Maker-s Diet

5 stars (The best diet based on the what God intended for us!!!!!!!!!!!) - The foods that are sold in the stores are so over processed and treated with so many chemicals that by the time we get them they can only do harm to our bodies because they aren't any good for us anymore. The fresh produce is sprayed with pesticides, and treated with radiation to kill the enzymes so that they don't spoil so quickly, but these are enzymes our bodies need to process the foods that we eat (and the government approved this treatment to our fresh produce). And all the sugar that is in most of the processed foods, it is hard to try to avoid refined sugar. I have read the book twice so far and because I am always looking at it, the book has become a permanent fixture on my coffee table. There is so much information in this book that I am still learning from it, and I have owned it for about 2 months now. I quit eating bread almost a year ago. But this book showed me what bread to eat, I now eat bread made with sprouted grains and contains no flour, with the wonderful results of no bloated feeling and no constipation. Sure some supplements are offered in the book, but these are things that you can get at most health food stores or from growing your own garden of fresh produce. The book has some great things in it. This book never promised to make me loose weight, only to make me feel better. And I really do feel better with just a couple changes that I have made. I drink kefir and it has lots of the good bacteria in it that is talked about in this book. My cat also drinks the kefir and doesn't get the diarriah that he used to get with cows milk. I always have said that my son got so big because of the hormones in beef, now I know that I was probably right, because there are hormones and anti-biotics in milk and/or the meat products, and these things are put there when injections are given to the cattle!!!!!!!!!! Come on people wake up!!!!!!! Sure some things may cost ...

Through the Bible in One Year- A 52-Lesson Introduction to the 66 Books of the Bible

5 stars (Through the Bible in One Year: A 52-Lesson Introduction to t) - I am currently using this to help me read through the Bible for the first time. I am finding it very helpful in putting information into perspecitive in an easy to understand format. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to dive into an entire bible study on their own or with others. 5 stars (Through The Bible In One Year) - I personally found this bible study to be excellent. The lessons were broken out into logical and easy-to-follow chapters and the pace of the lessons were realistic to complete in a one year timeframe. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to do a bible study--it's scripturally sound and very informative. 2 stars (Through the Bible In One Year; A must for the serious studen) - When I had the privilege to study this work under Dr. Stringfellow, I was fed by a true student of the word of God. Dr. Stringfellow made the Bible come alive which made me want continue studying after he completed thre study. I was able to go through the study a total of three time with this magnificent man of God. I came out with a great knowledge of the word of God which led me to further studying of the word of God. I would highly recommend this study to any student of the word of God.After going through this study, one can feel blessed by God. ...

Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them

5 stars (Bad Girls of the Bible: And What We Can Learn from Them ) - This is a must for every woman with or without a past. It allows one to look deep within and see the woman that was or is and the hope of a new life with and in Christ Jesus. It has wonderful insights into your relationships with others and more importantly with our husbands. How often we are quick to blame them when it just might be our problem and not their fault. I found this book spiritual, insightful and humorous. I encourage every woman to give it a look see. 5 stars (Bad Girls of the Bible) - My Sunday School Class is using it as their Bible Study, and think it is well done. Better so far for younger women, but I have read ahead and it will get better for the older woman. 1 stars (Misogynistic, Narrow minded, Simplistic ) - I read more than 30 pages of this book only because my book group chose it. The author begins by saying that her husband (an Old Testament scholar) read (imply vetted) and corrected it for her. Help me! She believes herself too ignorant and dependent to even write her own book. She takes a very narrow view of biblical stories, reinforcing male dominated interpretations. This is "born-again" drivel. I, for one, think of Eve as the first heroic scientist. I hope she grabbed that fruit, relished the knowledge (even if it was unflattering knowledge) it brought her, and later reflected that while it was hard won, what she had learned was worth it. (If I am unknowingly naked, please let me find out!) Life is more difficult when we do not live in ignorance and denial - but, oh, how rich, thought provoking, and exciting it is when we embrace unflattering truths about ourselves, others and the world we live in. The author appears to caution us against taking risks, thinking for ourselves, asking for what we want and challenging authority. If you are over the age of 20, you know enough about the complexities of life to find this book one-dimensional. ...

The Sins of Scripture - Exposing the Bible-s Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of Love

5 stars (Spong has a lot to say) - Sadly, there are many hate-filled reviews by people who obviously haven't read this book. Or they have an ax to grind with the bishop. Whatever the case may be, it's to the "reviewers" own detriment. To pursue truth, we must look at all viewpoints, not just one. The Sins of Scripture is the third book by Spong that I've read. The themes he covers are much the same: that the bible isn't the infallible Word of God; that theism, where God is understood as a person-like being who interacts with the world, is no longer believable; that we should focus on this life, instead of the life hereafter, becasue God isn't the kind of God who literally raises people from the dead; and that the true test of a religion is its ability to engender love in a person's life. The bible, as Spong shows, is a cultural artifact written by humans at a paticular time and place; they didn't know everything about the world and thus couldn't make "absolute" truth statements for all time and space. The Jews held certain assumptions about the world and the human person that, in turn, shaped their theology and ethics. But we don't live in that first-century world anymore. If we take the bible literally--with its culturally conditioned ethical and theological pronouncements--we end up with a lot of absurdities, even immoral behavior. Since the world can no longer wear those old Christian clothes, Spong offers an alternative theism that he thinks is a better "fit" for the world. Bishop Spong is a good man and a good theologian. I've met the bishop, even had dinner with him at Boston University. We talked for an hour, and even though our faith journeys have taken different routes, I still admire his honesty to say things that many Christians don't want to hear but will eventually make the world a place that God wants it to be. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie" 4 stars (Rescuing the Bible From Misuse) - Former Bishop Spong doesn't believe in the Bible ...

How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth

5 stars (Makes the Bible More relevant and fun To Read) - A great help in understanding the Bible and applying it to today's culture. Prevents making serious errors in interpreting scripture. 5 stars (An Excellent and Informative Book) - This is an excellent primer for those concerned with understanding the Bible and making applications in one's life of Biblical teachings. This eminently readable book is good scholarship authored by two theologians in the evangelical tradition. The thrust of the book is spelled out in the title, "How to Read the Bible." The authors do not insist on a particular interpretation, but show the reader HOW to go about discovering comtemporary meaning and application from these ancient documents and how to avoid faulty hermeneutics. I cannot recommend it too highly. 5 stars (great resource) - This is a great book to own if you are a serious student of the Bible. It is extremely helpful in understanding various types of books in the Bible. The title is exactly right - it helps you read the Bible for all its worth. I read it through, but I will continue to use it as I study. ...

The Red Tent

3 stars (Just okay for me) - I liked the idea of expanding on Dina's story. However, the content was sometimes a little to personal, at times gross, for me. I was also taken aback when I saw how much Diamante deviates from the actual text. This is not just an expansion of the story, but sometimes was outright false. A good story if not taken literally. 5 stars (Under a Wonderful Tent) - In terms of plot and charcter development, this book was wonderful. Based on charcters of the bible, the story explores the lives of the women in the bible which we never really got to know. Diamant has created a wonderful story about the women of biblical times, our fore-mothers Rebecca, Sarah, Rachel, and Leah, from Dinah's point of view. However, it is not any way offense to men. You need not be familiar with the bible to enjoy this book. If you are, you'll certainly recognize stories and characters from the old testament. Another work of fiction I might suggest that explores women and their stake in the Christian faith is John Mackowicz's The Last Martyr. With a similar theme, it portrays women in a positive light. 5 stars (A Terrrific Read) - This book is a story of Dinah, a character from the old testament that we know little about. It is the story of her life and her family in biblical times. There were things I didn't know about really, like the multiple wives and marrying close relatives. But it was in some ways very romantic, and sometimes heartbreaking. Dinah was a very strong woman. Also, I learned alot about what it was like for women when men were in charge of everything. But women were still a mystery to men, and what went on in the red tent was only for women to know. I really liked this book, it was hard for me to put it down once I started. ...

The New Oxford Annotated Bible- New Revised Standard Version with the Apocrypha- Third Edition Hard

3 stars (Helpful for the novice?) - Of all the english Bibles I will only give five stars to the KJV. It saddens me how many different versions abound in the english language, NRSV, NIV, NKJV, AB and more and all the feud around it. True many think they need the current english written language to undertake the reading of the Holy Word. I own several english versions and study Bibles. It has confused me to the point, that I now have started studying ancient Greek, to read the words of the Apostles and Paul as they spoke them. It does not mean I will not use those many versions to clarify and compare the meaning when I am in doubt. But I am sometimes afraid of become a Pharisee, a scolar of the Word, with an empty heart for our fellow brothers and sisters, one of the greatest sin. 5 stars (Outstanding) - The book was in excellent condition and I received it in plenty of time for my class. 5 stars (Like buying a fresh set of eyes) - Forget what you know about how easy the Bible is. Forget how simple it is to boil the Bible down into a practical lifestyle for today. Here is the Bible in all its historical complexity, in a rigorous and dependable English translation. This NRSV is, in many ways, quite accessible: It is well designed and cleanly arranged. The detailed notes and scholarly chapter introductions help break up big questions into manageable pieces. For Protestants like me, this is especially helpful when it comes to the Apocrypha. Also, at the sentence level this is an approachable and even warm translation. The "N" in "NRSV" means no "thees and thous" to trip over, as well as the elimination of gender biases not found in the original Greek and Hebrew. In other ways, this edition is very challenging. Gone are the "Apply This!" tips from your Evangelical pals. No one's explaining why Nehemiah is a good example of leadership, or the church today can take heed to Paul's letter to the Romans. You don't even get the comfort of "B.C." and "A.D." in the dates, whi...
