The book was in almost-new condition, it arrived within 5 days after I placed the order, AND the cost was 50% less than the used book price at my college bookstore! There are plenty of examples and explains the reasons and theories as to why a certain math topic is solved the way it is. It also shows different ways one could solve problems! This 6th edition doesn't have much difference from the 5th except for more on Statistics and Probability. ... 5 stars (The best reading methods textbook I've found) - I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (A must have!!) - I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children. ... 5 stars (Van de Walle achieves high marks) - Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, Fifth Edition is an extremely practical and useful tool for teachers. Chapters include information for varying grade levels. All chapters relate mathematics instruction to the NCTM content and process standards. Principles of a high quality mathematics program (equity, curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and technology) are presented throughout. Great suggestions for manipulatives and alternative ways to assist student's understanding of the concepts. This text helps the teacher make math "real world" and better yet, fun! 5 stars (a must have for any elementary - middle school math teacher) - This book has not only taught me to teach math effectively but it has changed the way I understand mathematic concepts as well. I was taught math walking step by step through each chapter in a text book, learning skills and not concepts, learning algorithms rather than developing logical reasoning strategies. Van De Walle has suited me as a textbook for myself and a resource for curriculum planning in my sixth grade math class. Math today is so different from how I learned it. This book explains how and why math has changed so much. I recommend it to teachers and parents alike.
