5 stars (Fantastic Resource for PMP Preperation) - After an aggressive 2-week period of study and preperation using Crowe's book as one of my two primary resources, I took and passed the PMP exam. I didn't crack the PMBOK, nor attend corporate training "boot camp" courses. My study plan went like this: Read "PMP Exam How to Pass on Your First Try" thoroughly and in order; took all post-chapter quizzes and tracked those scores; took final practice exam. I then read Tony Johnson's, "PMP Success Series: Certification Exam Manual (6th Edition)" and used the same formula (this book is more thorough than Crowe's but I found it tended to delve so deeply into the detail of the processes, that it often came at the expense of the "why?" which can inhibit your ability to grasp the entire framework; also the quiz questions were not quite as close the what I found on the real PMP as Crowe's book. Then, I went back to the Crowe book (which I had decided was my favorite by now), and began carefully reading through it again, paying special attention to the nuances and how each process fit within the overall framework. For more detail, I refered back to Johnson's book, which again, is a very valuable source expecially for specifics around tools and processes and I highly recommend it as well. Note that I purchased and browsed a couple other PMP study aids, but found those sub-standard by comparison. Learning the same materials from a variety of views is sound instructional theory, so I would suggest others apply a similar reasoning for a more comprehensive study plan. But if I had to only choose one, I would give Crowe's book the nod over any others because of it's ease of reading; it's ability to draw the entire PMI framework together and most importantly, the excellent practice questions (including the practice exam) that most closely matched the look and feel and difficulty level of the real exam. 5 stars (Principles to live by) - I saw Mary present her concepts at the Software Development: Best Practices and immediately went out and bought and read this book. I am an agile enthusiast and practictioner. The thing that stands out to me about Lean is that as others have said it seems common sense; but the old barb that "common sense is not so common" definitely applies. What I especially like about Lean is that it gives you "principles to live by" and how they are implemented is up to you as they must be applied to your unique situation. They do provide some tools and examples that can be used in implementing the concepts. However, the main idea is to abide by the Lean Principles with whatever tools/methods/processes that you think are appropriate. The other unique quality of Lean is that it talks the language of business as well. Who doesn't want more efficient software delivery, or the development team focused on the things that are important to the business? Implementing Lean in your organization could make the difference of whether your company stays competitive or not - it's that impactful. 5 stars (Invaluable guide for improving your development processes) - This book is a great read for anyone interested in agile software development. That includes developers, leads, and managers interested in speeding up development cycles, improving quality, and getting their customers the best value. This book's been out since May, 2003, but it's well worth picking up. The concepts within are absolutely applicable now, and will continue to be for quite a few years. The book's full of pertinent comparisons between the current state of software development and the massive changes in manufacturing over the last three decades, specifically demonstrated by the Toyota Production System, and 3M's innovative atmosphere for bringing products to life. The Poppendiecks make a great case as to how similar changes in software development can reap great benefits in the soft... 5 stars (Practical, thorough and accessible) - [Review duplicated from Amazon.co.uk] Jeff Garland and Richard Anthony have written a very practical and accessible explanation of the process of designing and describing the software architecture for a large information system. All of the major architectural structures are covered and the depth of experience of the authors is evident from the solid, practical advice given throughout. There is also a huge amount of practical advice as to how architectural structures can be described using UML, which is particularly valuable. The only significant criticism I've have is that they don't talk about the quality properties of the architecture all that explicitly. The focus in most of the book is about capturing architectural structures rather than talking about the required architectural qualities that led to the structures being selected. The reader is left to discern this for themselves. This said though, I'd still recommend the book to any practicing information systems architect. 5 stars (Excellent guide to designing large software systems) - This book presents a very practical guide to designing and developing large-scale software systems. I've been involved in a number of large-scale projects and this is the first book I've found that includes many of the things you usually find out the hard way. Things like how to effectively communicate the design to the team, how to manage iterations and how to document designs and changes to the design. Since the topic is large-scale systems, the book focuses more on techniques than on specific examples, but it more than makes up for that by providing practical tips and recommended reading references. 2 stars (Skip steps in examples, difficult to follow) - The examples in book are difficult to follow. Many intermediate steps were skipped. I am frustrated, trying to follow examples in the book and do not get the results shown on screenshots. I end up searching Google for answers, which I found all of them. If you plan to pay for this book, my recommendation is getting a copy of table of contents and then searching in Google for the contents. The book should mention (or at least refer to) the setup that makes Crystal Reports .NET work, e.g. where & how to set up IIS, virtual directory, etc. E.g., I can't get the screenshot shown in Figure 5-4 because I do not have the required virtual directory setup. Or, I can't get the screenshot in Figure 10-4 (still looking for answer as of writing). 1 stars (Look for another book) - I found quite a few mistakes. Does anyone review these books? The "chapter " on Web Services was particularly poor. I suggest looking for any other book on Crystal and .Net. 3 stars (Am I missing something here?) - I read the 2nd Edition. Many other reviewers thought the book was really good. Hm...it has some interesting ideas for additional, future work I would like to do, but ... 1. I found it to be rather disorganized. He jumps around a lot in the book, and sometimes it is hard to follow his examples. He tries to do two things at the same time: explain the different options in Crystal Reports and go through a detailed example (which doesn't cover all of the options). 2. I got off to a bad start in the book right away because he gives the .NET project the same name as the report, which confuses my version of Visual Studio .NET (2003 EA). In the sample code that can be downloaded from Wro'xs web site, he uses a different name for the .NET project. 3. His explanation of cross tab reports is a joke (and has some mistakes in it). Fortunately, he uses a good example(s) for the cross tab report(s) and a reasonably intelli...
