3 stars (Not so easy to read) - I got this book for an introductory class on microbiology. As part of a course it is OK. As others have pointed out there are some sections that could have been done better. For me the main issue was this was not so easy to read. I know it is college level, but for example my introductory biology and chemistry books did not suck the life out of everything and even had helpful little side articles that connected things up. If you are a professor I suggest using a different textbook, and of course you are better qualified to find said book. My issue was that this book was dull and I am interested in the subject so that shouldn't have been the case. 3 stars (Good for amateur microbiologists) - This book does a great job in reviewing the basic tenets of microbiology, however, it doesn't delve into near as much detail as needed for any micro major or graduate student. Sections on molecular bio of bacteria are particularly bad, and metabolic pathways are given only a brief overview (entner-doudoroff has less than 2 pages). That being said, the book does do an excellent job in surveying the vast numbers of microbes, and it virology section is above average for a bacteriology book. Decent intro book, but anyone going into detail should buy something else. 1 stars (?!) - too expansice, no answers for the stupid practice problems. They provide instructor free Study guide and CD, and the student has to buy the boring book. If they treat their readers equally, I would gave them 2 stars. ... 5 stars (Intelligent Presentation Of Roman Catholic Doctrine) - Of everything that came out of the twenty-six years of John Paul II's pontificate, I believe this book is the most important and will have the most lasting impact. I love how this expertly-composed book removed so much of the confrontation-inducing confusion about Church doctrine and made teachings clear. This is a sort of "rule book" for the game of Catholic life. Anyone within or outside the faith can easily find answers to questions about what Catholicism teaches is right and wrong. In the process this admirably useful and straightforward work can readily dispel many persistant myths about the world's largest and most frequently misunderstood religion. I joked to friends in high school, about the time this first revision of catechism in 400 years came out, that unless we read this book "how are we going to know what we should stop doing?" But there's much more than that to the catechism. This is akin to a written constitution for a religion founded in stages of revelation and fits of growth spurts that lasted in some cases for centuries. Is it the all-time final word on Catholic beliefs? Probably not. But for this present age it is exactly the document needed for the education of the world in which the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church resides. 5 stars (An endlessly fascinating source.) - "If God...the creator of the ordered...world, cares for his creatures, why does EVIL exist? 4 stars (Use catalytic mechanisms to build a company's wildest dreams) - Jim Collins operates a management research laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. Together with Jerry I. Porras he wrote the bestseller 'Built to Last' (1994), which he later followed-up with super-bestseller 'Good to Great' (2001). This article was published in the July-August 1999 issue of the Harvard Business Review. Most executives have a big, hairy, audacious goal (BHAG). So what is a BHAG? It has a long time frame (10-30 years or more); it is clear, compelling, and easy to grasp; and it connexts to the core values and purpose of the organization. In order to reach their BHAGs, executives write vision statements, deliver speeches, launch change initiatives, formalize rules and checklists, etc. But most executives never realize their ambitious dreams. However, the author believes that catalytic mechanisms can help organizations turn goals into results. "Catalytic mechanisms are the crucial link between objectives and performance; galvanizing, non-bureaucratic means to turn one into the other." Catalytic mechanisms share five distinct characteristics: 1. It produces the desired results in unpredictable ways; 2. it distributes power for the benefit of the overall system; 3. it has teeth; 4. it ejects viruses; and 5. it produces an ongoing effect. I needed a book to help me with SMS 2003 patch deployment and this book has nothing in it to help me.
