2 stars (I'm glad I'm the teacher and not the student!!!) - Wow. This book is bad. I have to use this book -- chosen by the department -- for a class I'm teaching. The fact that the book is a bad choice for this class is not the fault of the book -- I was given the text with instructions to teach chapters 1 - 4, 10, and 11, and then to use extra material for topics not covered in the book -- clearly, this text does not fit the class, and either the course should be redesigned, or a different text should be chosen. Anyway, a first glance was enough to see how miserably this book is organized. The first chapter covers: 1.1 Coordinate Systems and Graphs 1.2 Linear Inequalities 1.3 The Intersection Point of a Pair of Lines 1.4 The Slope of a Straight Line 1.5 The Method of Least Squares So, section 1.2 is dependent on 1.3 which is dependent on 1.4 -- isn't the order a bit backwards? And then in 1.5, you're on to a topic which is a huge leap in difficulty from learning how to plot a point on Cartesian coordinates from 1.1. Unbelievable. This type of interdependence carries on through all of the sections of the book that I've looked at (admittedly not all). It seems that one must already know the material from further ahead in the book in order to use the book to learn the material in the given chapter. I believe that by this Eighth Edition of the book, the authors should be removed from it -- it should be given to students using this text without already knowing it all, and let those students revise and edit the continuity of the material. Matrix notation is introduced, virtually without explanation of either how to use it or why. Examples are given that attempt to show how to perform some operations on a TI-83 (or similar) calculator, but these efforts fail miserably. Frankly, I'm having a hard time even figuring out what it is that this book is trying to teach -- and I already understand the material! If, however, the goal of the book is to confuse stud... 4 stars (EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR BEGINNING & ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES) - I have been teaching out of Angel & Porter for the last three years. It has quite a few good examples, though I agree with the first reviewer's comment that it does need more challenging problems. Among the topics I have covered are: inductive reasoning, set concepts, symbolic logic, truth tables, algebra, applied geometry, probability, statistics, and mathematics of finance. Though the examples are laid out fairly well for those who are mathematically inclined, the teacher who happens to have quite a few students with weak mathematical skills is often finding himself or herself in situations of having to create ways to become an effective expositor of mathematical theorems and applications. In other words, by trying to explain what the authors are providing in their examples, the instructor is frequently shouldering the added burden of making this book come to life not only from a mathematical perspective but also from a communicative standpoint. On a positive note, however, there are several excellent applications, and the range of topics is quite broad. Oftentimes there is a gap between the level of advanced high school mathematics and that of a four-year university that is so serious that even a student who performed A's in high school will struggle in the type of college math course he or she is placed in. 1 stars (DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!!) - My name is Sarah and I attend Ridgeway High School located in Memphis, Tn. I am in the 11th garde. I'm taking Alebra II right now, but I remember dealing with that book. It is not a good book. They have pages put in the wrong places. They will tell you to do a problem and you wouldn't know a thing about it, then at the end of the chapter, it will show you everythign about it. I encourage you not to buy this book. I would not waiste my money!!! 1 stars (High School Math Teacher) - I must agree with the other reviews: this book stinks. It is not organized in a logical order. For instance, in section 1-1 students are expected to translate verbal expressions into algebraic ones. To do this, a student needs to understand order of operations, which isn't introduced until a later chapter. 5 stars (Math Book) - Wonderful condition, shipped very very promply. I recieved it within days. Seller was good, I give my highest recomendation. 5 stars (This book is truly outstanding.....) - As an upper level high school mathematics teacher, I have to say that Blitzer's text "Thinking Mathematically" is truly an outstanding book! - for both the student and the teacher. He explains concepts in an extraordinarly thorough and direct way, with a lot of great worked out examples and terrific exercise sets that increase student knowledge and insight regarding the concepts and computations. Having used both this book and Blitzer's other PreCalculus text, I can honestly say that his books for the secondary market put most of the other books out there to shame - there's really just no comparison. If you're a student who really wants to learn math, or a teacher who appreciates great support materials, then you really do have to get this text, as well as Blitzer's other texts, such as "PreCalculus". 5 stars (The best Basic College Mathematics book) - The book is really easy to read and follow directions. I like the exercise reviews after each class and the test at the end of each chapter it is very helpful. I really recomend this book. 5 stars (The Best Jr. High Math Curriculum) - I'm a homeschooling mom of 7, and this is the best math curriculum I've ever used for Jr. High. Two of my daughters have used this in 7th and 8th grades and then went right into algebra without any problems. This book is so thorough in explaining each process that very little help was ever needed, and since then they've used this same company's curriculum to teach themselves algebra and geometry. I recommend this to anybody who wants a very easy to use and excellent math curriculum. (By the way, don't let the title fool you. A bright 5th grader can use this book successfully.) ... 3 stars (its a math book) - not gonna do back flips for a math book 5 stars (Pleasently Surprised) - I am a college student and the math book that was at the bookstore was $100.00. I went onto amazon.com and found the same book in new condition (looked like)for $56.00. I was kind of weary about ordering on-line for the first time but was pleasently surprised. This was a great first experience and plan on ording all my books through amazon.com. 5 stars (Fun mathematical Ideas) - "Ideas" is the key here as we have calculators, computers, and what not to do any real number crunching or comparing. This book carries you from zero to the edges of most any mathematical discipline. The information in the margins ties the theories back to reality. At the appropriate locations in the margin are postage stamps from around the works are shown commemorating the individual mathematicians and scientists relating to the subject being studied. There is a section in the book with the answers to all the odd questions. ... 4 stars (A pleasure to read and excellent introduction to algebra) - Kenn Amdahl has succeeded in making algebra look like a game and maybe he is right. I recommend this book to anybody who has the slightest interest in the subject. It reads almost like listening to your mathematically inclined buddy exchanging a few words on mathematics over a beer; that's what I felt, two buddies getting together and just shooting breeze over mathematics. It certainly made me conscious of paying more attention to VOCABULARY and CONCEPTS and less on manipulation. In " Algebra Unplugged " Amdahl and Loats have put together an incredible compilation of some of their best acoustic live sets. The production, is at times, a little weak, but the heart-rending "ax * ax + bx + c = 0" recorded live in Lecture Theatre 2.13 is probably one of Algebra's finest moments. There's some real gems on this album - The stunning 15 minute opus "Quadratic/Equivalence" being a case in point. A couple of tracks grate a little, most noticably - "Simplifying Exponents of Polynomials" but on the whole this is a magnificent album and is not to be missed. ... 4 stars (A Great Textbook) - I teach a university course based on this textbook and I really like it. It is full of mathematics that students can apply readily to everyday situations, without being heavily computational. The problem sets are relevant to the chapter text. Also, the problem sets are divided into three categories ("walking", "jogging", and "running") based on the level of thought that must go into them. The four chapters on statistics and probability are not quite what I'd like them to be, because in my opinion they cover too much statistical ground in hardly any depth. They would be better if they just did some basic statistics and didn't try to get students at this level into normal curves and standard deviations and all that. My students are particularly fond of the graph theory unit (chapters 5-8). In fact, their only complaint of the book so far is the high price. ... 5 stars (Basic Math at Your Own Pace) - I consider my self not good at math and this book really taught me what I did not learn in high school. It has several exercises and several examples to follow. From fractions to geometry everything is lay out. Very easy to understand and right to the point. 5 stars (AMAZING!) - This book is so simple to understand. The examples help out so much with the exercises. I thought my math class would be very difficult but with the help of this book I know I'll pass the class. 5 stars (Why is the InterAct Math Tutorial Software not included.) - The only thing I can find wrong is that the disk mentioned in the Preface was not included with the book. Would be nice to know how to acquire this disk. Something like phone numbers, sales stores, or even how much the cost is for people who can afford it. Will the school be able to acquire one?
