MicrosoftÂ# Exchange Server 2003 Deployment and Migration

3 stars (Good reference but not a step-by-step) - The author is obviously well versed in the migration process and the tools and structures that live under the surface. However, the level of detail presented is simply too deep to be useful as a step-by-step guide, which is what I was hoping for. This book will serve as a book shelf reference to backup more detailed walkthroughs I have found on Microsoft's websites. 3 stars (Helpful, but a work in progress) - It seems this book was rushed to press with little proof reading of its content. While there is plenty of helpful info, there are also plenty of items that are not technically correct. Many of these can be pitfalls if they are not caught early enough in the process. For example, the book claims that to execute Forestprep one needs to be a domain admin. This is not correct. To execute Domainprep one needs to be a domain admin. To execute Forestprep one needs to be a schema admin, enterprise admin, and local admin on the machine where forestprep is run. This isn't a big issue in single domain implementations, but in a typical parent/child enviro this can be a pitfall. Overall, this is a great compilation of information that is otherwise difficult to find. I certainly found the book to be extremely useful when used alongside other documentation such as the MS deployment and planning guides. However, I believe the book could use another round of editing and a release as a second edition. 5 stars (Clearest instructions for 5.5 to 2003 Exchange migration!) - It seems like I read every white paper and book out there about migration from Exchange 5.5 to 2003. All left me wanting more information. Until I read Kieran's book that is. Our government Department will be upgrading shortly and we now have the info we need to do the job. Thanks to Kieran for a great job in putting together his excellent book. ...
