Influence- Science and Practice 4th Edition

5 stars (Good guide to the tactics of persuasion.) - Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one. Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here. The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book. I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication. The only problems I see are that t...

Influence- The Psychology of Persuasion

5 stars (Most Useful Book You Will Ever Read) - I loved this book, it teaches you that getting what you want isn't always bad and how you can make other peole happy to help you out. The book has a good mix of interesting anecdotes mixed in with scientific fact. I think it's great for anyone who is tired of getting pushed around. 5 stars (It is so simple) - Once you understand the various systems and programs that make us up, the whole ordeal of being human becomes so much easier. This book can take you a long way towards that goal. 5 stars (A well researched study on human behavior) - I have long been a student of human behavior. It fascinates me. Naturally, I found this book to be fascinating as well. The book is well researched and does more than present one person's opinion. It summarizes actual reserach results from many, many studies that demonstrate the behaviors under discussion. Reciprocity? Consistency? These are some of the concepts discussed and are immediately applicable both as a tool of influence as well as an understanding of our own behaviors and how to protect ourselves from "forced" behaviors that we are programmed to do even when we don't want to. Yes, we are programmed to perform certain behaviors, and when we don't, we suffer socially. Naturally, this provides a means for some people to take advantage of us. This book gives us an understanding of the behavior and therefore a reasonable defense. So, you don't believe we have automatic programmed responses? Then explain how the Chinese so effectively pursuaded American P.O.W.'s to defend communism during the Korean War. Then explain how Moonies got so many people to contribute to their religion when people just didn't want to. And explain why the effectiveness of that technique waned over time. Can't? Cialdini can. And convincingly. ...

How to Win Friends - Influence People

5 stars (Read and win.) - Just a joy to read, this book is truly a classic. With its timeless stories, the author illustrates the principles of getting along with others. A book that should be required reading for all human beings, I highly recommend it to one and all. Other self-help books I liked include "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works." 5 stars (An amazing book) - Dale Carnegie wrote a fantastic book. He writes about success principles that he and others have used to become leaders and build cooperative relationships. I can tell a differece in how people respond to me since trying to use these principles. People smile back and are much friendlier. One reason I think this book is so successful is because the concepts are very simple. For the most part, all of his principles can be found under, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If one tries to understand how their actions are going to make others feel before they act, they have gone a long way to winning friends and influencing people. Another thing that I like about Carnegie's book is that it is all based on sincerity. All of the advice he gives provide win/win situations. Nobody loses; he does not try to manipulate or deceive people. I believe Carnegie had an honest interest in people and wanted everyone to acheive to their highest ability. The principles in this book helps one help others as well as help oneself. Truly a fantastic book. 5 stars (How to Win Friends & Influence People ) - Great for a long drive, reminds all of us how we should act. While the examples feature dated individuals, the lessons are contemporary. ...

Heart of a Leader - Insights on the Art of Influence

4 stars (Easy to read) - This book is very readable and gets some new thought processes working. 5 stars (Good Advice) - I purchased the e-book of "Heart of a Leader." The book is chock full of great tips for a variety of situations with the justification for each tip. It is an excellent reference for any supervisor or manager. 5 stars (Easy Reader) - Blanchard takes a "Chicken Soup" approach in this book, capturing the essence of the leadership parables told in his previous works in simple, concise summary format. This is a great reminder for those who have read the other works, or a great introduction for those who haven't. Either way, the essence of Blanchards' winning approach to working with, and getting things done through people is superbly presented. ...

How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization

5 stars (Great book) - I'm not a scholar, and I'm not Catholic. But I found Dr. Woods' book an engaging, interesting read that sheds new light on the Middle Ages and Renaissance years. It's the kind of work that provides (at least for a non-History major) an epiphany a page. You can read it in a week, and come away with a much broadened understanding of the topics explained. 5 stars (Woods's Reviewers Prove His Point!) - 1) One reviewer comments that Woods writes of anti-Catholic prejudice in America without giving evidence. This is a matter of historical record: from individual events like the burning of the Ursuline Convent to movements like the KKK (founded against Blacks, Jews, and Catholics), the Eugenics movement (ostensibly to rid society of the so-called "feeble-minded," but pushed by uber-eugenicist Margaret Sanger against "Southern Europeans" - i.e., Italian Catholics) - to the Know-Nothing party to the entire "nativist" movement in the US to the vicious and ignorant response to John F. Kennedy's campaign (and I am only scratching the surface!) anti-Catholicism in the US is well documented and would fill volumes. The same reviewer wants "evidence" of the ignorance about the middle ages - well, open just about any popular book on history and there it is - a thousand year blank between the Greeks and the self-proclaimed Renaissance! Many, many textbooks and even historians are just as bad - they skip over the rich, thousand-year tapestry of the Middle Ages - which had universities that in some ways were even freer intellectally than our "political correct" thought police of today - with apparently no knowledge whatsoever of what an exciting and even radical time it was (do you think it was easy for St. Thomas Aquinas to introduce Aristotelian ideas?) The Church did not stifle debate - they were its source! The evidence won't fit in an Amazon review - or in an encyclopedia sized volume. The author shouldn't have to provide evidence for the self-evident! ...

French by Design

3 stars (Should you buy French By Design?) - I just did. The homes & rooms featured in this book indicate that money is no object and these homeowners want you to know it. Subtlety is non-existant. Rooms are very "we had a decorator & we spent a LOT". Most items looks too new, too ruffled, smocked, tucked and otherwise adorned. HOWEVER, if you can get past the pictures & READ THE TEXT- Phillips has a lot to say that is excellent. She lists sources & frequently shares fascinating comments on everyday details of French style (who knew about brass hardware vs brushed nickel?). If you read; buy it. If you look only at photos, don't! Charles Faudree is much better in the genre in my opinion. 5 stars (Beautifully presented.) - Another of Philips' beautiful French decorating books. Homes presented in this book, as with her other books are high end showing us the sumptuous fabrics, and lovely French furniture she specializes in. Homes shown are mostly mansions, not the average house. Good coffee table book. 5 stars (Brilliant, Great Sense of Design, a Visual Delight) - Not unlike all of Phillips' books, this book is a masterpiece of European syle and design. No detail is left unnoticed. The furniture, fabrics, antiques, architecture, artwork, and carved stone are each carefully considered and beautifully photographed. Every page is a visual delight. I cannot recommend it highly enough! ...

The Science of Influence- How to Get Anyone to Say -Yes- in 8 Minutes or Less-

5 stars (Chapter 11 is Worth The Entire Cost of the Book) - Chapter 11, titled "I'll Think About It", is a priceless chapter. In speaking with people when presenting your product his examples he uses are broken up into 3 categories. It is so simple yet so powerful! The rest of the book is laid out in easy to understand language that can make you understand why people think the way they think. As a professional business executive I had to give this book the highest rating. It is well worth the money and should be added to your library. 5 stars (continuation of Cialdini's Influence) - I was extremely captivated by Cialdini's Influence: Science and Practice, which is one of the best read book ever on the subject of influence. i have read many other influence and persuation books since. this one is the best, and should be a requiered reading to extend the original cialdini's book. while cialdini's book is more simple and clear with the 6 weapons, this one is more rich and expanded to various details of the influence. Basically, the book is about how people react to certain situation and how we can maximise our effort. people are more emotional rather than rational. how the same offering can be arranges to be more attractive. Each technique will yield a lot of success if we can smartly apply it to our daily life. Hogan took a lot of various sources materials and put them together, along with his own research, into this wonderful book. If you are a salesperson, negotiator, leader, or person with anything to do with people, you should read this and try out some of the techniques explained. My book has been read and re read and flipped and marked, and i have used a lot of the materials for my seminars, and i still love this book and re read it often. If you want to influence people in anyway, buy and read this book! 5 stars materials..... 5 stars (A Dangerous book in the wrong hands) - Effective, useful and authentic are the words I would use to describe Science of ...
