5 stars (Oz and Roizen make anatomy lessons entertaining and offer sound advice for staying healthy.) - `YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that will Make You Healthier and Younger' is an interesting health book which teaches readers how the body works in relation to its anatomy and central systems, including hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory organs, and immune. It also covers topics that deal with the brain, heart, digestive, reproductive glands, lungs, bones and joints. Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have managed to make learning these topics both entertaining and enjoyable by including illustrations of pathogenic creatures whose role it is to portray illnesses that harm the body. There are also illustrations of benevolent elf creatures whose role it is to guide readers through different parts of the body in terms of names and functionalities. The authors have also incorporated a sense of humor, trivia, and a diet plan. In terms of humor, we have analogies between the activities of muscle cells when engulfing deceased heart tissue and the fighting that regularly presents itself on daily talk shows. In terms of trivia, the authors discuss the frequency at which one should have one's thyroid level checked. They reveal the quantity of air biscuit floatation produced by an average human per day. They also expose information regarding the quantity of times that most persons engage in intercourse. Finally, the authors invite their readers to try a 10-day, 30-recipe diet plan designed to benefit certain systems of the body such as that of immunity. This is an important book because not only does it mention how diseases start and the consequent effects that they have on one's body, but it also provides readers with advice on how to prevent or quash conditions that bear the potentiality to endanger the quality of their lives. Moreover, it also offers advice for ways to preserve the body's health and youthfulness, which in the long run, co... 5 stars (Catchy.) - I like evaluating new diet books now and then and this one caught my eye with its catchy title. While the title almost implies that you only have to diet for three hours, the true meaning is that you need to EAT every three hours. By doing this, your body doesn't go into starvation mode which will eventually undermine your goal to lose weight. Reader friendly and well laid out, I'd have to say its not a bad plan all in all. However even if you follow it to a 'T', you'll be doing the same thing you've always had to do to lose weight- eat less and exercise more. Readers interested in other diet books might also want to check out "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan" 4 stars (Good Information) - the 3-Hour Diet book is an easy book to read and directions are easy to follow. It has helped me in eating properly, not so much in losing weight, just learning to eat the right way and take care of myself 5 stars (The 3-Hour Diet ) - It is a very "easy" read. Information is practicle and makes sense. Lots of encouraging real-life success stories from people who have modified their eating habits with "The 3-Hour Diet" plan. Has a 28 day menu planner to personalize yourself. Includes receipes and meal suggestions. Has lots of motivational tips and uses visualization technics to help you along the way. ... 5 stars (Updated information AND layout makes a healthy book) - This book is by far the best ever. It is the first edition of OBOS which I feel really addresses the equally pressing healthcare needs of myself and younger generations of women. I had used prior versions of this book, but still had felt that the authors of those versions assumed that the readers had been with them through the 1970's...etc. The tone of this book is very inclusive and non-presuming. Consequently the medical information presented does not get lost in the personal vingettes. Our own generational experiences are just as important. Also, the authors take an enligthened approach to sexuality instead of segmenting off "LGBT/queer" issues into a couple of areas. This book is further commendable because it made more of an effort to tell the stories (and thus provide culturally sensitive health care) for different women. Kudos to the people who suggested a redesign and updating of the book layout. 5 stars (A must have!) - Especially in a culture as embarrassed to talk about anything sexual, this book is a great resource for everyone. Information as open and educated gets harder and harder to find in today's political environment, and this book has it all. No home should be without it! 1 stars (very political) - While I understand the possibility of political opinions surfacing in books, what was supposed to be a helpful guide for women of all ages is in reality a campaign for pro-choice and many other liberal stances. The book goes so far as to state that those that are pro-life "have created an atmosphere that is stigmatizing, threatening, and too often violent." While there have been cases of violence that the great majority of us do not condone, I find it very offensive that this opinion about us causing trouble that apparently isn't warranted is stated as a fact. Also included are various opinions about how religion has caused problems for teenagers especially, stifling them in the... 5 stars (The best diet based on the what God intended for us!!!!!!!!!!!) - The foods that are sold in the stores are so over processed and treated with so many chemicals that by the time we get them they can only do harm to our bodies because they aren't any good for us anymore. The fresh produce is sprayed with pesticides, and treated with radiation to kill the enzymes so that they don't spoil so quickly, but these are enzymes our bodies need to process the foods that we eat (and the government approved this treatment to our fresh produce). And all the sugar that is in most of the processed foods, it is hard to try to avoid refined sugar. I have read the book twice so far and because I am always looking at it, the book has become a permanent fixture on my coffee table. There is so much information in this book that I am still learning from it, and I have owned it for about 2 months now. I quit eating bread almost a year ago. But this book showed me what bread to eat, I now eat bread made with sprouted grains and contains no flour, with the wonderful results of no bloated feeling and no constipation. Sure some supplements are offered in the book, but these are things that you can get at most health food stores or from growing your own garden of fresh produce. The book has some great things in it. This book never promised to make me loose weight, only to make me feel better. And I really do feel better with just a couple changes that I have made. I drink kefir and it has lots of the good bacteria in it that is talked about in this book. My cat also drinks the kefir and doesn't get the diarriah that he used to get with cows milk. I always have said that my son got so big because of the hormones in beef, now I know that I was probably right, because there are hormones and anti-biotics in milk and/or the meat products, and these things are put there when injections are given to the cattle!!!!!!!!!! Come on people wake up!!!!!!! Sure some things may cost ... 5 stars (Great reference book) - I am a yoga and Pilates instructor, and have always wanted a guide to understand the anatomy of all the poses, especially those concerning lower back issues. Now I have a great guide that helps me aproach these poses in a much safer way. 5 stars (Should be Required for Yoga Teachers!) - I'm currently in training to be a yoga teacher, and this book is required reading for my courses. It really goes into detail, as it applies to yoga postures and breathing. It's a must-have for the serious yoga student or teacher. It will help you make the most of your postures, and understand the mechanics involved. It will also help you explain and cue poses if you are a yoga instructor. 5 stars (Amazing) - This book is simply a treasure. Full of hard to find information you probably wont find anywhere else. 1 stars (Don't buy this one if you are currently enrolled in a class!) - This is the out of print edition and doesn't contain the 2001 updates that most schools will test you on. 5 stars (great book and very helpful) - This book helped me a tremendous amount getting through the national certifation exam. Every three years we have to up date our certifation in California. I also purchased the Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations ISBN 0971999678 which is also on amazon. This book covers all levels of food safety. I highly recommend it, especially if it's your first time taking the course or exam. 5 stars (Very detailed and great pictures) - I live in Washington State where it's required to be certified in sanitation before applying for a job. I bought this book and also bought the Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam: Key Reviews Questions and Answers with Explanations (ISBN: 0971999678) and it helped me pass the course and the national certification test. 5 stars (dietminder food and fitness journal review) - This is a very thorough, well thought out journal. Well worth the purchase! Amazing how much it helps me! 5 stars (The Dietminder Works!) - I really like the way the information is set up in this book. I've lost 8 pounds using this format. I would highly recommend it to people who need to be aware of what they are eating. 5 stars (A must read) - I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe. I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option. I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background. 2 stars (Technically accurate, boring read) - I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them. 3 stars (This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt) - This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... 3 stars (Just Another Rip Off) - I found this book to be just another hype to get your bucks, it does not contain anything out of the ordinary regarding muscle building, I found it very disappointing. I'm glad I purchased it on Amazon.com with a discount. 4 stars (Some new information for the long limbed) - I've been trying to gain weight for 15+ years but with little real success. I've read alot and I'm constantly in the gym. Most of the information in the book is not new; eat alot and lift heavy during short intense workouts. What I did find new was the biometrics and assessments portion of the book. It gave new insight into proper body mechanics for the ectomorph. There was a few pearls of wisdom in the nutrition section. I've put on 10lbs after 6 weeks even without following the nutrition plan exactly. I would definitely reccommend the book to a novice to intermediate level hardgainer, it will save them from wasting alot of time listening to mesomorph advice on how to train. 2 stars (Ectomorphs Only) - With all the complimentary reviews you'd think that this book was a godsend. Certainly there are good things about the book: its discussion of biomechanics and kinesiology, good demo photos, nutrition discussion, and friendly writing style. Here's the caveat: although the description of the book is for "hardgainer's (although they eschew the term, they prefer the term "hypertrophy challenged" in their first chapter), AND they say that there is a difference between a hardgainer and an ectomorph, the rest of the book addresses the ectomorph. BUT what if you are a short skinny guy? You may feel a bit left out when every other paragraph laments the ectomorphic challenges of long bones, height, longer radius, kinesiology of those INCREDIBLY long legs that never tire and how easy it is to lift for short guys. 5 stars (I love this book!) - I am really loving this core workout. It shows alot of great workouts with differents ways to do them. They weren't all the same old same that i have seen in shape magazine. I do agree with others that the binding should be alittle nicer but if you are careful with it like i am, it won't fall apart. I also like the excersize routines at the end of the book. Made it easier to get going without taking the time to find a plan to work whatever muscles i wanted that day. There is a couple all body, a few core, few upper body, lower body and abs and backs. Also the pregnancy was good to know for the future. I think this has a good viarity for people with different skills all the way up to great physical fitness. I still find alot of excersizes challenging 5 stars (A great book for ball resistance traing and stretching A+) - First let me preface that I have been working out on exercise balls for years and truly believe in them as exceptional fitness tools. Even advanced body builders are using the ball to improve core muscle structure and increase metabolism and flexability. This book is exceptional in its approach. The selection of exercises encompass all training levels. Novices can immediately use the book and hard core, experience lifters can also strongly benefit. There are several very useful workouts at the end of the book which I would strongly recommend. I only have two problems with the book. 1. The book itself will fall apart on you in the gym. I wish it were constructed a little better. At least it is not an expensive book. 2. There could have been more descriptive pictures in some of the more advanced, multi-move exercises. I had no problem understanding all of the moves but a beginner may become confused with some of the more complex maneuvers. Other than that, this is a wonderful book. This is the one book to have when it comes to Ball training. 4 stars (Good content, needs better packaging) - I use Lisa Westl... 5 stars (Extremely valuable item) - Somehow TI was my first introduction into the swimming world and in the beginnning I got a slightly biased view on what is to be done in the water. Still.. once I acquired some more experience and had a chance to get familiar with other approaches I could fully appreciate Terry's work. With all my reservations Terry's done a great job by building a consistent system approach to swimming skills and it really, really works. Absolutely great for beginners. 5 stars (Outstanding book and awesome learning tool!) - Once you get past the feeling that Terry is trying to sell you the book after you've already bought it, you'll realize what a valuable tool this book can be. (I'm sorry, he may be good and know his stuff, but his arrogance is somewhat of a put-off.) Regardless, this book is for anyone who feels that swimming is either their weak-point or for people who avoid it all together due to frustration experienced when actually trying to swim. Terry is the foremost expert in swimming efficiency and knows what he's talking about. 5 stars (Slowly but absolutely Changed swimming for me!) - Terry spends many pages hyping his technique, but after about 6 months with the book and videos and doing the drills, I can justify the hype. I have never swum competitively, going to the water only for fitness, but it always irritated me that some pudgy guys could easily cruise through the water as I frenetically splashed to keep up, exhausted after only 15-20 minutes. I read the first book which only covered freestyle, but jumped when this book came out. When I first got this book, I rushed through all the drills hoping to swim faster in less than a week, but accomplished very little. Not quite the results as the reviewer who dropped his 50 yd time by 7 seconds in his first session. Over the last 5 months, I have spent at least 70% of my pool time practicing the drills, learning balance, breathing on both sides, gliding and streamlining my bo...
