5 stars (Must Have Grammar Reference) - This is the most comprehensive guide that I have come across. A must have for every secretary! 4 stars (Gregg Reference Manual 10th Edition) - I am a medical transcriptionist and my job requires to know punctuation, spelling, and good grammar. This book is presently serving its purpose. I may not know everything but whenever I have a question regarding punctuation and grammar, I always refer to the book. Because of this book, I am able to do my job confidently and it is so rewarding to know that I am doing it right. I still have a lot to read up on this book, but I am glad that there is such a book to help out people like me, although a high school graduate and still needing help in these areas. Thank you for making it possible. 5 stars (Excellent resource) - I first encountered Gregg when it was a required text in an English composition class I took in college. Over the past several decades, I've bought every new edition of the GRM and have relied on it in my work in various educational institutions. Like me, you may want to have one copy for home and one copy for the office. I absolutely agree with other reviewers that it is not only easy to understand but also easy to use. I cannot recommend it highly enough. ... 5 stars (Clear and easily understandable) - The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F. There's no substitute for learning young, but this is the closest thing to it. I've never seen a grammar book that's easier to understand than this one. Forget the Idiot's Guides or Dummies books, and invest a little more in this one and the accompanying workbooks. If you're really interested in boning up on your grammar skills, this will be of tremendous assistance. Also, if you're looking to buy the workbooks, remember that this is the THIRD edition, that it is in blue, and so you should conduct your search for the accompanying workbooks by first identifying those that are blue, and make sure that they're for the third edition. There are several editions available here on Amazon, so buy wisely. 4 stars (For those who crave grammar) - This book is a comprehensive reference grammar/workbook for non-native speakers of English. If you are trying to choose between Azar's grammar books, the "Blue" book is intended for intermediate to advanced students, while the "Black" book is for beginning to intermediate and the "Red" for raw beginners. A grammar outline from the "Blue" book is also available without exercises. The book is divided into chapters covering notorious grammar points, including: verb tenses, modals, passive voice, gerunds and infinitives, singular and plural, adjective clauses, noun clauses, connecting expre... 5 stars (Un Repaso Perfecto) - Repaso was used as my school textbook for higher level Spanish courses in high school. Everything is great about it. The instructions are in English which makes it even more compatable. The book is able to review old concepts, but has enough to teach the little proper things about Spanish. It is a great purchase for any student that is just learning Spanish or has been taking it for many years and needs a reference. 3 stars (No Answers Given Here) - Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared. 5 stars (The most complete review around!) - If you had Spanish in high school but it's been a while since you've used it,then this is the perfect book for you! It begins with the simple present tense then progresses to the more complicated preterite and subjunctive. At the end of the book you will find interesting cultural tidbits to enhance your experience of learning the Spanish language. Have fun! ... 5 stars (Well Done) - Thank you Amazon! Great Product, great price, making my college books very reasonable. 5 stars (A great resource) - I ordered this book because it was on a list of required texts for a class I am currently enrolled in. I wish I had this book years ago; it would have helped a great deal in high school and in the time since then in college and even in helping my younger brother to write his reports. Not only does it give the basic mechanics of writing but it also completely explains the MLA, APA, and Chicago styles of documentation. Each section has a thumb tab and an index for ease in finding needed info. 5 stars (Misplaced Parts, Dangling Modifiers) - The LITTLE, BROWN COMPACT HANDBOOK is one of those essential resources that no writer, email user, student, or English speaker should be without. This current edition in particular is designed to be useful, both in its compact overall size as well as in its plastic comb binding which allows any page to be opened flat upon the desk alongside a keyboard while typing. In addition to its clearly-written and comprehensive treatment of grammar rules and punctuation, the LITTLE, BROWN COMPACT HANDBOOK contains highly useful sections on formatting and citation styles (MLA, APA, etc.), research methods, and methods for effective and persuasive argument formation. All sections are conveniently tabbed for quick access to the information you need. I highly recommend this excellent reference for anyone looking to improve the quality of their writing. Jeremy W. 5 stars ("501" -- !Es necesario!) - Recommended by our excellent Spanish professor (a native speaker), "501 Spanish Verbs" is a "must have" for serious students of Spanish who want to move quickly to learn and expand vocabulary. 4 stars (Spanish 501) - This book is a helpful guide and tool for anyone learning spanish on their own or in a college classroom. 5 stars (A MUST for the Spanish student!) - My son is currently in Bolivia, South America, and requested this book after seeing it at a North American friend's house. He was learning the language, but having trouble with the past tense of the language. I ordered the book, mailed it to him, and now he's learning so much faster. He says he doesn't know how anyone learning the language could do so without this book! The book came to us quickly, so we were able to get it off to him within days of his request - Thanks! ... 5 stars (The Little Brown Book) - As a student and instructor, I never ever write a paper without using this book. I have used it since 2002 and each edition is better and better. My highlighter never stops when finding important ways to quote authors, annotate references, and where to use semi colons. 5 stars (Oldie but Goodie) - This was a required book for one of my college courses a hundred years ago. Out of all the college books I ended up keeping, this goes on the top of the list. This is a necessary book for anyone writing anything. As an advanced freelance writer, I still refer to it from time to time, and probably always will. 5 stars (Essential tool for all wordsmiths, not just students) - Although intended primarily for students, The Little Brown Handbook is an excellent reference for all nonfiction writers. While writing my own recent book on option pricing, I consulted it often regarding the use of colons, semicolons, dashes, and other fine points of punctuation. It even served as an arbiter of correct grammar and usage in the occasional dispute with my copy editor! Almost everything critical to good writing is covered--from organization, paragraph coherence, and sentence structure, to punctuation, word choice, and issues of style--and in sufficient detail to be useful to the working wordsmith. Guidelines for academic writers, a discussion of the American Psychological Association (APA) style employed in the social sciences, and suggestions for use of the internet in research, also appear in The Little Brown Handbook. All in all, this book should be found near the Strunk and White classic, The Elements of Style, on any writer's bookshelf. I would unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone who writes, either for pleasure or for a living. Jeffrey Owen Katz, Ph.D. Author (With Donna L. McCormick): ? ? 5 stars (Great Book ) - This was my first grammar that I got, not knowing it was for second year students and beyond. I had learned something about Greek and the biblical text and all that because of my interest in apologetics and cults. This book helped me on some of the texts that cults like to use and abuse for their own purpose. Now being in seminary, and planning to study Greek in the future, it will be something I will need. It also directed me to William Mounce's work which was great. God Bless Dr. Wallace. 5 stars (A Great Grammar...Helps Your Understanding) - I have long enjoyed the writings of Dr. Wallace. His writings on the biblical textual issue in particular have caused my mind to be stirred and my spirit to be awakened to the living reality of the New Testament. His grammar is only slightly less exciting than that - and that's MY fault, not his. Wallace gives many examples that make his book relevant, contemporary, and accurate. Given how difficult it really is to understand some of the Greek volumes - just read A.T. Robertson - this one never fails to make its case easier to understand. Thank you, sir. 3 stars (Is it a grammar or an Evangelical apology ?) - Please do not misunderstand the provocative title of my comment: I am not saying that this book is worthless and that you should avoid buying it. On the contrary, I think that Wallace's grammar is an invaluable work worth every dollar you spend for it. First of all, unlike other grammars, this one is as thrilling as a detective novel. Of course, unless you are deeply interested in NT exegesis, you will probably find Wallace's huge treatise anything but gripping. But if like me you are an impassioned reader of the Gospel and its original text, you will surely love this book. And the good news is that it is not for advanced learners of koine Greek only. In fact I started using it with minimal knowledge of Greek and I have little doubt that a complete stranger to the language of Luke and Paul c...
