The Girlfriends- Guide to Pregnancy

5 stars (Hilarious!!! at last a book talking about you and not the baby) - Recommend it for everyone! my husband liked it a lot too. I wish the first chapter of the girlsfriend guide to the first year was in this book instead. BUy Both and read them before the baby is born. I got hit by a postpartum blues stage that did not let me read through the other book until I had passed that stage... should I had had the other book or read the first chapter....I might have been a little less concerned about feeling like an alien had possesed me.... 5 stars (Funny Pregnancy Read) - This is an awesome book that every first time mom should read. It isn't as scary, wordy, and technical as "What to expect when your expecting". I used the girlfriend's guide as a secondary book to that one. It is very good for a few laughs and not so good on the technical information but that is what the other book is for. 1 stars (I truly couldn't stand this) - Yes I know she is trying to be funny, and sarcastic, but it mostly comes off as mean and whiney. I wanted a light read, not this condescending instructional book which really isn't any more informative than any other pregnancy guide I've picked up. In my opinion, its NEVER A good idea to tell your husband "and that's the child you didn't want!" after a baby he was less than enthused about is born and makes him smile. Can we say marriage counseling? And I don't think pregnancy gives you an excuse to treat everyone around you badly. And please don't tell a pregnant woman that your friends, who love you and are trying to support you, are outright lying when they tell you how good you look and how little your body has changed. You probably NEED that type of encouragement from friends, and hearing that your friends MUST be lying is just destructive. I couldn't even get through this one, I think this book seriously needs a rewrite and the author, a clue that you don't need to be mean to be funny. ...

The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands

4 stars (Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands CD) - Very good book. It gives you a dose of reality and makes you take a look at your relationships. It helps to see the things that are taken for granted and to appreciate and understand your spouse. 5 stars (Wonderful!) - I love that Dr. Laura tell's it like it is. Every bit of her advice caused me to step back and take a look at myself and how I can better support and love my husband. 5 stars (to close to home) - Sometimes the truth hurts. Dr. Laura always tells it like it is, even when we don't realize it. My husband actually bought me this book for his birthday. After I loaned it to someone and never got it back, I decided to buy the cd. ...

Your Pregnancy Week by Week- Fifth Edition

3 stars (One of the best pregnancy books out there) - I am having my second child, so I purchased the 5th edition book. I loved the 4th as it was very informative and had a detailed drawing of what the baby looked like each week. The 5th edition is a bit different. I still think it's very informative and the best book to have to guide you through these 9 months, but I wish the doctor would have put all the "scary" medical information in a "special considerations" chapter at the end of the book. It's a bit frustrating to have to read something negative every week. I also wish the doctor could explain a bit more about the development of the baby instead of just a few generalized sentences. Overall, it's alot more detailed than others out there. 4 stars (Good for first-time pregnancies) - I bought this book, along with "What to Expect when you're Expecting". I liked this book BETTER because of the week-by-week changes in baby/me vs. the monthly chapters in WTEWYE. As far as some folks saying it's negative, all baby books I've looked at will tell you what can go wrong. I would rather know what CAN possibly go wrong and the symptons so I can know if it's an issue I should be contacting my doctor. 1 stars (Your Money: Down the Drain) - Over the past 22 weeks I've been reading a number of books, this being one of them. Your Pregnancy Week by Week is organized in 6-7 page chapters, one for each week of the pregnancy. Each week gives a couple paragraphs on changes going on with the baby, changes going on with the pregnant mom-to-be, and then spends 2-3 pages covering other topics of potential interest to the pregnant woman. Therein lies the problem. Potential interest does not mean necessary relevance, and the fact that each week you get a taste of potentially interesting information means that if in week 11 you have a question about the difference between doulas and midwives, you have to wait until week 19 to read about it. One chapter spends it's entire 'Things You...

Belly Laughs- The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth

5 stars (Made My Fiancee Laugh!) - I bought this book for my fiancee to help her through her pregnancy. I bought Jenny's book to give her some good natured comic relief from this sometimes difficult period, and it sure worked wonders. She said it was a quick read, but it had her laughing constantly. And she would lend it to her friends when they would need it. Though I bought a few more serious books for more definitive information, this was a great change of pace. I guess I should read it too. Thanks Jenny for putting a few smiles back on my Mommy to Be's face. 5 stars (Best Pregnancy Book For a Laugh) - This was by far my favorite of all the pregnancy books I've read. I was in tears from laughing so hard at numerous points throughout the book. 5 stars (A must read for any "Real" Pregnancy) - I was having a tough time of it during my 4th month of pregnancy. I was still throwing up, my ob wanted me to put on some weight which my husband took as a sign to force feed me, and I had literally 20 emails from extended family giving advice on keeping food down. My favorite "You need to eat more meat, gravy, and potatoes"...An Aunt who is an OB Nurse prescribed this book! The day it arrived, I read it cover to cover! Jenny McCarthy's frankness on pregancy from morning sickeness, sore boobs hemrroids, to fear of "pooing" on the delivery table is a welcome relief for all of us preggos who are sick of hearing about the pregancy glow and know that "What to Expect when you are Expecting" doesn't really cut it! Thank you Jenny - you saved my life. I am soo glad that I am not alone! ...

Healthy Sleep Habits- Happy Child

5 stars (This Book Changed Our Lives) - When my daughter was 7 months old she was waking up every 90 minutes and not napping well. I was exhausted and becoming anxious. I felt powerless to help her. I knew something had to change. A dear friend gave me this book and by coincidence a family meember also sent me the same book. This book is so good because it is filled with useful information that actually helped my family. I tried several of his recomendations with great results. Every now and then my daughters sleep will go through changes and I still consult this book for help. I have given it to many people. My own Pediatrician did not know as much about sleep as Weisslbuth does. Every new parent should own this book. I cannot say more good things about it. 5 stars (This saved my sanity (and probably my marriage)) - I can't say enough good things about this book. I read it when my son was 5 months old. Prior to that, he 'napped' during the day for about 30 minutes at a time and screamed the rest of the day and night. Turns out, he was seriously over tired and all of my attempts to get him to sleep were actually adding to the problem. The day I put the advice in this book into action, my life changed. I am actually able to enjoy my son. Buy it. Buy two just in case you lose the first one. 3 stars (Helped with naps...) - "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" is a good reference guide for getting your child to sleep better during the day. My son went from maybe taking one nap to taking 3 decent naps. I now know his "tired" signals and immediately put him to bed. It is very rare when he fights naps now. However, this book has not helped us with his night-wakings. The book tells parents to put the child to sleep between 6 pm and 6:30, my child won't sleep at 6 pm. He has gotten himself on a schedule where between 6:30 and 7 pm he wants to be in his pj's and eating and then put to bed. The book also suggests not getting the child when he cries...in other wo...

The Nursing Mother-s Companion- Fifth Revised Edition Nursing Mother-s Companion Paperback

5 stars (The Best Nursing Book You Can Buy) - I discovered this book two months into breastfeeding, and wished I had found it sooner. Everything you possibly need to know about nursing is under one cover. Unlike most other breastfeeding books that only discuss nursing a newborn, this book contains information on nursing newborns through toddlers. Highly recommend this book for all nursing mothers. 5 stars (Excellent nursing book!) - I bought this book as I am expecting my second baby and had problems nursing the first. I went through at least half a dozen lactation consultants with my first before I got the info I needed to make breastfeeding successful, and this was after the first two weeks and after my baby was hospitalized due to dehydration. I wish I had this book then, as it covers everything I needed to know about poor latch/insufficient milk supply. I am learning so much as I read the book and feel so much more confident as I approach the birth of my second. This book covers every issue I think you could come across with breastfeeding. 5 stars (Lots of good info) - Great book. Actually answered some questions (one in particular) for which I'd been unable to find answers elsewhere. Including at the Medela booth at a professional conference. Highly recommended, nonpartial, good book. ...

The Anger Workbook Minirth-Meier Clinic Series

1 stars (Wasted Money......) - Wow, I know that I can be a fool, but I was definately robbed of $16.00, even after reading the front and back of this very deceiving book! I mean, I know that I need help with anger, but this book just seemed to make me ANGRIER! I spent $16.00 on a wanna-be Bible (Something I could have gotten for free at my FORMER Church) and the contents only seemed to anger me more! Not only did half of their text not make sense, their descriptions of anger and recognizing anger only seemed to categorize the entirety of this country! The verbage used and perspective in which this ~story~ is told borderlines an autobiography of a man named "Tom". If you like a good bedtime story, like to waste time and money, and do not need real anger management help, then by all means buy this "novel". My opinion~ Dont waste your time or money, you already wasted enough reading my review! Kyle.... 5 stars (Great help!) - This book changed the way i veiw anger. Yes, i am a bible believing Christian and this book does use the bible as a source of reference. I learned so much about my anger and the anger of others. It encouraged me and gave me tools to work with to choose to control my anger. I can't wait to read their next book! I also understand how to respond better to angry people. It is a real eye opener! 5 stars (Anger Managment) - This workbook provided immediate results on how to deal with anger. I did not believe anger was an issue with me until I read and understood anger also comes in the form of frustration and irritability. In reading and working through this book I found that I have a choice on how I respond to situations and it's up to me to decide how I will deal with issues in my life. I am glad I purchased this book to use as a reference or to offer to my friends. ...

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen - Listen So Kids Will Talk

5 stars (A Great Guide For Parents) - Of all the parenting books I've read this year this one has been most helpful. I love the cartoons! Sound advice for people who want to improve parenting skills. 5 stars (How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk) - Excellent book. This is as close as I have come to an instruction manual for parenting. 5 stars (the best for parenting) - This book examines love, communication, and methods for bringing up happy, secure, and respectful adults. Isn't this the major goal we all wish for? If you read it, you'll reread it dozens of times. ...

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families

5 stars (Family Lessons From "The Inside Out " ) - Covey encourages every parent to do some soul searching to become aware as to what really is priority in life. Then, he suggests we put "first things first." I believe that most parents would admit that they do wish to have "FAMILY" comes first--above all else. But, in today's busy, often stressful daily routine of life, accomplishing that goal is often "easier said than done". Covey clearly points out the essentials...such as establishing effective communication lines through family meetings and one-on-one talks with the kids. He makes so much sense as he describes with personal anecdotes how love, values, morality, and empathy for others is a process of teaching and learning from "the inside out"...in other words from within the family rippling out to society at large. He talks about establishing a family mission statement and helps to direct moms and dads to find the courage and the skills to make changes for the better. Covey's book creates the mindset and the outline. If you have young kids like me, I recommend a perfect compliment 'how-to book' with Covey's ... called "THE POCKET PARENT." This handy book, written for parents of 2-6 year olds, is loaded with compassion and humor along with over one thousand tips and skills to try. It literally trouble-shoots many of the problem behaviors we all deal with daily-such as Angry outbursts, Bedtime, Mealtime and Clean-up refusals, Tantrums, Disrespectful attitude, the "Gimmes", Morning "Crazies", Sibling fights, Whining and many more. These 2 books (one more theoretical, the other more "hands on" practical) have changed our lives. We now have more peace and cooperation in our family---and that gives us more time to enjoy each other. Consider both books for your home reference library. 3 stars (A Bit Too Sappy For Me) - While this book had some good insights and "a-ha" moments, it was too sappy for me to get past the third chapter. I enjoy a good metaph...

Setting Limits with Your Strong-Willed Child - Eliminating Conflict by Establishing Clear- Firm- and

4 stars (Very good info/advice; I need 1 step more.) - The authors have solid, reasonable advice for parents; tools which work with children of strong-willed OR compliant temperaments. That has got to be invaluable for parents trying to raise both in the same home. All of the insights seemed valid and I saw nothing to contradict what I know of early childhood development and age-appropriate expectations. If you are needing help within your family, this book is excellent. My only disappointment is that it does NOT give any advice for me as a parent on how to help my child function in environments where the adults in authority do not have these skills. (Relatives often say, "He doesn't listen to anyone but you." I can tell them they need to give CLEAR, FIRM limits and FOLLOW THROUGH, but it doesn't do much good.) The book does suggest sharing the info in the book with teachers, relatives, etc. But parents can never ensure that teachers, relatives, coaches, and other adult leaders will have or use these skills. I'd like to help my child learn to cooperate anyway UNLESS there is a moral reason not to. (I am a big advocate of questioning or even defying authority when compliance violates your moral principles. But to constantly question or defy simply because you can is innappropriate and often dangerous.) There are times when it would be in my child's best interests to cooperate with an authority even though he/she does not set clear, firm, respectful boundaries. I hope the authors will go one more step and write something to help my strong-willed child (and I) deal with the rest of the world. 5 stars (A fabulous, practical guide!) - My husband and I both read this book for help with understanding our "strong willed" 5 year old, and the techniques work so well that it has amazed us. I would recommend this book to anyone with children because it provides great, easy tips for understanding and communicating with your children. 5 stars (Wonderfully educatio...

The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome- Completely Revised and Updated - Advice- Support- Insight- and

5 stars (Aspie's Read This Book First) - I picked this book up when my 7 yr old son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I quickly discovered that I'm just as Asperger's as he is. This book has taught me more about Asperger's than my son's school or even his psychologist. If you truly want to understand Asperger's in all of it's flavors you must read this book. I've begun to understand myself in a whole new light and have found this book to be as comforting and reassuring as it is educational. 5 stars (The Asperger "Bible") - Of the several I've read, this book is absolutely the most comprehensive and well written available on the subject of Asperger's Syndrome. Thanks to the foresight and dedication of Barb Kirby in establishing the OASIS website and on-line forum, parents from all over the world are able to come together and compare notes on behavior and strategies, resulting in an enormous knowledge bank to draw from. Along with that, the authors present the combined wisdom of the various "experts" and discuss pros and cons of various treatment options, based primarily on actual experience and outcomes, with plenty of surveys, official statistics, and scientific studies. I had to laugh out loud early on when the authors state that if nothing else, it is an impressive book to plunk down on the table at school meetings! What really makes this book different from any other, is that the authors are both also mothers of kids on the spectrum, so you feel connected and understood while reading the book - truly an OASIS for anyone struggling to understand, respect, protect and champion their Aspie kids! 5 stars (A Must for Families or Professionals working with Aspergers) - This isn't a book, it is a "good deed" (no, make that GREAT deed). And even that isn't high enough praise. Page by page, we have found answers to dozens of questions that we have been asking, but previously finding no answers. We went to therapists, psychiatrists & psychologists, but unt...

The Cosmo Kama Sutra - 77 Mind-Blowing Sex Positions

5 stars (Good Drawings, Modernized Text) - I first went and looked at the Kama Sutra in the free on-line version at books-on-line.com. The price was certainly right. But it was the original, ancient text, and somewhat hard to follow. Damn good reading, but sometimes hard to imagine just what they were talking about. Now comes this edition, very reasonably priced which takes the positions and illustrates them with drawings. It's a lot easier to understand. I guess that I'm just a bit too simple minded. A lot of these look pretty interesting, but some of them (Face-to-Face Fandango, page 65) looks like it would hurt. The book is put out by Cosmopolitan, so it's oriented to the female side. Each position has a 'Why You'll Love It.' A little bit of 'Why He'll Love It' wouldn't hurt. After all this is a two person sport. 4 stars (The Cosmo Kama Sutra) - The pictures are great and it is really fun. Some of the poses I found were some we had just done naturally. All in all I recommend the book. 4 stars (Cosmo always good!!) - Great book!! This book put back the blazing fire in my relationship. Ethnicity and Family Therapy- Third Edition

5 stars (A must read for all professionals working with families) - This book is insightful as the author elaborates on different ethnic populations and the broad range of cultural influences that family therapists encounter in clinical practice. It is a must read for all professionals working in the field of family therapy, social work, psychotherapy and counselling who work with different ethnic populations. 5 stars (The Best There Is On The Influences of Our Ancestors) - Ethnicity and Family Therapy is quite simply the best book that exists to any interested person as well as students and professionals with a good overview of important factors to understand when dealing with differences that exist in people. I first became familiar with Monica McGoldrick about eighteen years ago. She has devoted her life's work to research and writing on the influences of ancestry and ethnicity in our contemporary lives. Every time I pick this book up (over the first and second editions), I find myself lost in it as if it is my first discovery of it and I always learn something new! A great book for a discussion group to consider. 5 stars (A Must for anyone working with families) - I have been using this book and the earlier book in my practice for more than ten years. It has been vital to my work not only with other cultures, but my own (Irish)> I have often shared the readings with my clients who also found the chapters on their cultures to be acurate. If there was going to be one book on my shelf, this would be it. Got a copy to sell I would buy it as a back-up! ...

Clinical Guidelines in Family Practice

5 stars (Essential clinical reference) - This book is an essential clinical reference for both NP students and practicing NPs. It is organized in an easy to use format. It contains up-to-date information on diagnosing and managing common illnesses seen in both children and adults. It also contains thorough information on health promotion. I would recommend this book to all students and new clinicians. 5 stars (Best Book For Practice) - we use this book in our practice as a policy book for mid-level providers. 5 stars (Invaluable Reference Tool) - As a nurse practitioner student, things were much easier once I discovered this reference. As a new graduate nurse practitioner, I KNOW I couldn't survive without this reference. With the focus on evidence-based practice, a provider MUST follow true, tested, approved guidelines to stay up-to-date and free of trouble! Worth every dime and then some. ...

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work - A Practical Guide from the Country-s Foremost Relati

5 stars (Action oriented advice for today's couples) - I found this book to be very helpful and therapeutic. The first chapter is a little challenging to get through but after that I found practical insight into common challenges faced by today's couples as well as excercises and action items to overcome these challenges. There is a lot to read but I found it well worth the time. I would definitely recommend this book for any committed couple regardless of whether or not you have major problems in your relationship. The book sheds light on how to discuss problems in a reasonable fashion and does not put any unreasonable expectations on you to always agree with your spouse. It even acknowledges that individual relationships are likely to have their own set of perpetual problems that will never be solvable but teaches you have to cope with these issues as a couple. 5 stars (The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work) - An excellent, research based text that offers practical information. It's about real life rather than Hallmark movie portrayals of relationships and offers many ways to work on repairing, rekindling, and maintaining loving feelings in a marriage. It's well presented, clear, easy to read and suited all readers. It ought to be required reading in high school and college so people have more realistic expectations of themselves and their partners. 5 stars (Solid Review on SEC OND Marriage book - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - We bought this as our sec ond book on marriage (since we're still young at heart), and found a nice primer on does and don'ts. It covers a lot good tips on how to relate with eachother and drivers most of its analysis from insider trading tips on successful relationships. My husband, Jameson Thottam, and I lead busy work lives working across coasts (him in the mortgage company working for firms such as Battery Ventures/Loan Page, IndyMac Bank, Homestore and myself on the East Coast) and its always nice to get insights from o...

The Minds of Boys - Saving Our Sons From Falling Behind in School and Life

5 stars (Good Book!) - I read this and it gives great alternatives for boys that are having a hard time in school. I definetly recommend it! 5 stars (The Boys' Educational Crisis) - Gurian and Stevens use scientific research to diagnose what every alert parent and educator has been thinking for over a century--boys' brains and bodies were NOT made for the modern western educational system. Our system forces boys to be taught in sedentary settings, using learning styles unfit for their masculine minds. Gurian and Stevens begin by documenting the boys' crisis in education. Such research, though not novel, when pulled together like this, rattles our cages enough to gain and keep our attention. However, the true strength of "The Minds of Boys" is its thorough, detailed, specific, field-tested solutions. In area after area, "Saving Our Sons from Falling Behind in School and Life" empowers parents to equip their sons to overcome the many obstacles that they face in the school setting. One can only hope that educators themselves will read and heed the advice of Gurian and Stevens. If they do, then the next hundred years could produce a much more boy-friendly educational system. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming, "Beyond the Suffering." 5 stars (great book) - I brought this book as a parent, because i have a young child who is entering public school for the first time and i want to be sure thatbi can help him in any way possible. i found the book very informative and well written. ...

Crucial Conversations- Tools for Talking When Stakes are High

5 stars (The Most Important Thing In Life) - We speak our lives into existence. The most important subject I have ever studies -- the most important class I've ever taken -- has been a class on Conversation. We have 3 conversations which determine our lives, and the impact we have on those conversations determines our success or failure, our happiness or tragedy: The conversation we have with ourself. The conversation we have with another person or people. And the conversation that occurs after we leave the room. Do whatever you can do to impact and improve the results of those conversations. If this issue is a challenge for you, by all means, get this book. Study and perfect your conversations -- it will change your entire life. 5 stars (The Pool of Shared Meaning) - Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High, by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan and Al Switzler, Forward by Stephen R. Covey, McGraw-Hill 2002, 240 pages, AU$27.95 (Dymoks) The authors define Crucial Conversation as a discussion between two or more people where (1) stakes are high, (2) opinions vary, and (3) emotions run strong. Crucial Conversations are frequently spontaneous; more often than not they come out of no where. To find that you enter a Crucial Conversation watch for signs that people don???#t feel safe (silence or violence) and your own style under stress. (...) The authors address three aspects of Crucial Conversation - managing our style under stress, dialogues technics and, briefly, techniques we may use to arrive at a decision once the pool is filled with shared meaning. On Style Under Stress At the foundation of the book lays the EQ theory, popularised by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 book . The EQ theory articulates the evolutionary survival value of the amygdala, a part of the brain that overrides the problem-solving part of the brain in fight-or-flee situations. As had been predicted by the EQ theory, the authors have observed in numerous occa...

What to Expect When You-re Expecting- Third Edition

5 stars (For Women) - My husband wans't very interested in this particular book because he said "he already knew everything he needs to know". I think I should have bought a more fairytale type book as I think it makes him nervous to hear about anything that can go wrong with his first baby! 5 stars (Wonderful for first time moms-to-be!) - This is an excellent reference for first time moms-to-be, chock full of scientific explanations and situational questions that cover all the bases. And it is the only book my OB recommended! 5 stars (The Mommy Bible) - This is a WONDERFUL book! My husband got it for me with our first baby, and what a life saver it was. I brought it with me wherever I went. Anytime I felt anything strange, I would look it up in this book and there was my answer. Now we are expecting our second baby and I'm using it again. It's a great book for rookie parents or experienced ones. I highley recommend it. It's also great if the hubbies read it, they get to know what we are going through better and can help us along the way. ...

Parenting With Love and Logic - Teaching Children Responsibility

2 stars (A Pastor) - I'm not opposed to allowing natural consequences to teach children when it is practical; however, this book seems to take this approach to the extreme (see other reviews for examples). While the book is repleat with religious references, the approach seems to be based on Adlerian concepts rather than Christian. Natural consequences should not always be trusted to teach higher principles of empathy, justice, and mercy; values I want my children to embrace. Often, good people must invervene to protect the weak and capable people must look after the disadvantaged. You will likely find a handful of good suggestions in this book but use with caution. For the detached, emotionally unhealthy parent, it could be a powder keg.
