4 stars (Good) - I have taken many Psychology classes. This book is clear and well illustrated. There is room for improvement but this is a great textbook. 5 stars (An Excellent Review of Relevant Research and Theories) - This is an excellent text for adolescent development. It is an easy read for undergraduate students and it provides summaries of a variety of current research projects. I have used Steinberg's text for two years to teach a course in adolescent development and I have yet to find a better undergraduate text on adolescence. 5 stars (Excellent resource) - Steinberg is an incredible writer and a top researcher. This textbook is the best of its type. ... 5 stars (Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers) - In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ... 5 stars (Human Learning) - This is an amazingly well written text. Ms Ormrod actually practices what she preaches, so the book is organised as an exemplar of how to help students learn. I bought the book as an optional text for a Masters in Education, then I sat up one night to check it out. It became compulsive reading, very hard to put down. It gives a broad overview of Educational Psychology thinking over a wide period of time, and encapsulates it. It is full of useful references. Many of my colleagues have borrowed this book for various courses and for course development for educational projects. 4 stars (This is a good practical reference book for teachers.) - Human learning gives a good basic understanding of learning theory for teachers and others who are interested in educational psychology. There are some very good examples for all theories discussed. The book jumps around a bit and some of the explanations are too technical. ...
