The Cultural Landscape - An Introduction to Human Geography 8th Edition

5 stars (Refund) - I realized after placing the order that I wasn't quite ready to buy the book and my money was refunded instantly. Great customer service and quick response time. 4 stars (Great for AP Human Geography) - Currently I am taking an AP Human Geography class in my high school and this is the book we were assigned to buy. This book has wonderful charts and pictures along with descriptions. This book goes into depth and doesn't only touch the surface. I recomend this book to AP Human Geography teachers and students! ...

Physical Geography - A Landscape Appreciation 8th Edition

2 stars (BUYERS BE AWARE 8th Edition Published) - Fall 2004 & Spring 2005 Students: the 8th edition of this book is published and comes with a CD, and, in some cases, a free world atlas. Check with your instructor for requirements. In any case, I wouldn't spend $100 for the 7th edition. Haven't read the book yet, so no rating. 4 stars (Very well-written and illustrated text with great photos) - Obviously written by authors who have a deep appreciation for this subject and a desire to pass on their knowledge, this text is useful not just for students of physical geography, but for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of geopolitics, area studies, anthropology, world history, etc. For example, I would have no clue about the culture, history and politics of Central Asia/Afghanistan and vicinity (my area of interest) without having a comprehensive understanding of the physical terrain and climate of this region--and how its inhabitants have adapted to it. I would not have gained this understanding without reading this text. My only complaint is that I had hoped for more emphasis on environmental issues. The authors may feel that this is beyond the scope of an introductory text; but problems such as the shrinking Aral Sea and tropical rainforest destruction are so widely catastrophic that I believe they deserve greater attention and understanding even at the introductory level. 5 stars (still on my bookshelf) - I remember this book from when I was an undergraduate, lo these many years ago (OK, so it was an earlier edition)! I'm glad to see it is still available and updated -- I enjoyed it then and I am using it now in answering the questions my children throw at me. This is an excellent resource book. I probably wouldn't pick it up as a light read at bedtime, but if you are interested in this topic you could do far worse than to get _Physical Geography_. ...

Earth Science and the Environment with EarthScienceNow and InfoTrac

5 stars (Earth Science Teacher reviews a Good Book) - I have used this book once for a course I teach for K-8 pre-service teachers called: Earth Science for Teachers. It is only 1 hour so I can't use all the content in the book, but, it is an excellent content reference for people who are expected to know and teach more and more content every year. Read this book for your own fun, or, use it as a reader friendly resource with excellent pictures and friendly assignments. ...

Essentials of Geology 8th Edition

1 stars (Hmmm.) - I honestly do not know how to rate this, because I still have not received this book. I already had my first test. So, I had to go buy this textbook from the bookstore on campus and was charged an outrageous amount. Also, I emailed the seller to see what the tracking number was and still haven't had response. 5 stars (Essentials of Geology) - The book has a wealth of information, I have enjoyed reading it, and using it in my class. 4 stars (A good textbook for the the physical geology student) - This book is intended as a text for the collegiate course in physical geology. The course encompasses a general overview of the physical processes by which the Earth continues to develop, both gradually and by sudden events of great magnitude. Plate tectonics, volcanism, erosion, mountain building and shaping, mineralogy, mass wasting, the impact of man, glaciation, and all other manner of things are clearly discussed in nineteen separate chapters. The color photography and diagrams are remarkably good, and closely follow the text, which is a real boon, especially to a student who is hard-pressed for time. The coverage is up-to-date and accurate in all respects. Many of the photographs, such as the those of the eruptions at Montserrat, are very current. Given the fact that physical geology is the first of six courses required for any geology degree, and that any well-informed person should have no trouble understanding the contents of this book, I would recommend it to any reader interested in earth science, student or not. ...

Geosystems - An Introduction to Physical Geography 6th Edition

3 stars (Geosystems/Sixth Edition) - Good Book! Lots of good illustrations and examples, with an overubundance of current world data, and concepts. This book would be great to use in conjunction with classroom lectures for a sixteen week or full semester course, so that you have an opportunity to absorb pertinent material. With the amount of information in this book I would not recommend its' use for a short eight week internet course. 1 stars (This is NOT a paperback textbook!) - What Amazon neglects to inform you on this page is that this book is actually the *STUDY GUIDE* for the hardcover textbook, not the textbook in paperback form. Buyer beware!! 1 stars (Ugh!) - The subject of Physical Geography is challenging enough, the last thing students need is a poorly written text book. ...

Earth Science 11th Edition

4 stars (Awesome, not quite college level) - I'm using this book for a high school freshman year Earth Sci class, and I love it. It's very readable and clear, with appropriate diagrams that help understanding. It also avoids doing what lots of high school textbooks do, which is showing lots of weird-looking kids in plain T-shirts doing experiments in a doomed attempt to appeal to students. I've learned a lot with this book :) 5 stars (A great book covering everything) - This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also. It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out. I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful. I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book. ...

Imagining Abrupt Climate Change - Terraforming Earth

5 stars (Writing Beyond Genre) - Most of what Kim Stanley `Stan' Robinson writes is classified as science fiction. His works also often wear the label `literary,' but I read a little bit of everything, including unliterary science fiction, so I think dispensing with labels would be appropriate at this point. Stan's novels are the works of a writer with broad interests and a penchant for accuracy, so getting into his head through the Amazon Shorts titled "Imagining Abrupt Climate Change: Terraforming Earth" was lots of fun. In this 20 page electronic download, Stan lets us in on the genesis of his current project, a near future trilogy [including Forty Signs Of Rain and the soon to be released Fifty Degrees Below] that has the Earth descending into a sudden cold period. He relates connections to his personal interests and two previous novels [Green Mars from the Mars trilogy and the stand alone Antarctica, which he wrote after being part of the Antarctic Artists and Writers' program]. There are several methods for reading the piece, and other than a few typos, I really enjoyed "Imagining Abrupt Climate Change" and look forward to pieces by other authors in the Amazon Shorts series - a series I hope is long term and will not abruptly end. 5 stars (Nobody makes 'boring science' as interesting as KSR does) - I'm of the belief one should never pass up the chance to read anything Mr. Robinson publishes. His prose is like the crispest poetry, but without poetry's pretentiousness. This essay, like his fiction, presents theories without shying away from the difficult task of giving the reasons why they're worth considering -- even when it means explaining concepts from paleontology, climatoly, and other similarly unglamorous sciences. It is an engaging read that will help those eagerly awaiting "Fifty Degrees Below" bide their time until that novel's release while also helping to understand the author's motivation and thought process. Even if you've avoided Mr. Ro...

Under the Black Flag- The Romance and the Reality of Life among the Pirates

5 stars (Fascinating Overview on the Life & Times of Pirates of Old ) - Most people think of pirates as romantic anti-heroes. I sure do, having been fascinated by pirates since I was a little girl. In the nonfiction book UNDER THE BLACK FLAG, author David Cordingly debunks the pirate myth to tell us what real 17th and 18th century pirates were like: uneducated, drunken seamen who were very young and very violent. Writing in a clear, easy-to-read style, Cordingly explores pirate life (mostly within the Caribbean), from historical raids to shipwrecks, pirate loot, and executions. There's even a chapter about female pirates. I found this entire book fascinating, and read it as quickly as I would read a fiction novel. Moreover, I often stopped to read aloud certain passages to family members, just because the passages were so interesting and full of historical significance. For instance, I had no idea that pirates sacked Panama or that an earthquake completely destroyed Port Royal in Jamaica, a big-time pirate hang-out. The most popular passages, however, were the descriptions of exceptionally nasty (yet curiously inventive) means of torture carried out by sadistic pirate captains on their poor victims. You have to read it to believe it! Anyway, UNDER THE BLACK FLAG is quite an eye-opening experience. It's history and adventure and fascinating biographies all rolled into one. Highly recommended! 4 stars (very interesting) - Good book, would buy it as a gift for a young person or a casual reader. Not to academic, but not to kiddie either. Lots of interesting info on the real deal of pirates. Worth the money. 3 stars (Interesting Subject But Poorly Organized) - My favorite part of the book was the afterword, which quickly summarized the book's main theme - the difference between the reality of pirate life and the romantic mythology created by books, plays and movies. There are many other interesting topices covered. For example, the difference between b...

Geography - Realms- Regions and Concepts

5 stars (Perfect Condition) - This item was in perfect condition!! The only problem I had was that I was told it would arrive in 2 days and it took 7. Other than that I would do it all over. 2 stars (Authors biased towards India.) - In the chapter about South Asia, the authors have written quite a lot about the "Kashmir problem" but not once have they mentioned the ethnic cleasing of 350,000 Kashmiri Hindus that took place in 1990. I just cannot believe that they don't know about this. 2 stars (Nice features -- but disorganized) - It reads okay, but it is difficult to retrieve information as a resource for homework. The topics are inconsistant from chapter to chapter and are not oriented to the geographical topics defined in the Intro. The topical structure needs to be rewritten to make it a better resource. ...
