2 stars (A poor example of engineering mechanics textbook) - I was forced into purchasing this group of books for my university engineering program as all of the homework problems required were straight from this book. Additionally, the books were packaged with schaums problem sets that were particularly useless (schaums outlines are usually excellent, but their problem sets did not contain all of the detail and had nothing extra to offer over Beer and Johnston's textbook) and therefore a waste of my money. With that said, the only redeeming value of this book is the sheer number of exercises and answers (numerical answers with no explanation, however). The writing quality suffers what english majors call overuse of passive voice. Overuse of the words "is," "will," "are," etc. characterize this style. With the lack of acting verbs in sentences, the book effectively numbs the mind and puts the reader to sleep. This passive use of verbage also serves to take the emphasis off of the important parts of sentences. Aside from stylistic issues with the english language, the book also suffers from a lack of vision. The authors did not provide a good methodology to approaching problems at all. They hint at it, by telling the student to draw pictures. However, in examples, the authors jump from one step to the next without much explanation of how a person would discover the techniques themselves. This makes the homework problems particularly difficult when a completely different approach than the one in the examples is required. There are also derivation and explanation issues. For instance, in the handling of the precession of free bodies (this example sticks out in particular), the author provides a diagram and some equations. However, students cannot precede merely from what the author explained. The student, in order to approach the problems, must assume the validity of the vector diagrams and their relationships, along with equations, seperately. The diagrams ... Easy to read, follows the CDs and has a word for word tapescript at the back. Biggest Plus: Easy and Fast 4 stars (Conversational Spanish In Nothing Flat (Frobose)) - Easy to use -- have found a couple of errors in English-to-Spanish words, but no big deal. It is somewhat difficult to use the book in conjunction w/ the recording, because the book has no real format. Took me a while to realize the "almost verbatim" words on the tape are where an index usually is. 5 stars (Exceptionally Excellent) - I have purchased and successfully used Behind the Wheel Chinese/Mandarin. It blows me away that a person buying a car course in Chinese would complain about having a written text, Pinyin version or otherwise. Any true scholar of Chinese will tell you that learning to speak the language correctly is the key. Written Chinese is a whole new ball of wax and can actually detract from the learning experience for speaking purposes at least. Imagine trying to read Chinese while driving. Give me a break. For that reason, Behind the Wheel Chinese is simple, straightforward, easy to understand, easy to use. The course has two excellent native Mandarin speakers, a male and a female and an American instructor without an accent who explains everything. Both voices repeat twice so that you can duplicate the difficult and challenging sounds of Mandarin which uses different 'tones' to convey meaning. You learn all of this stuff in the comfort of your own car without having to look up or read anything. If you really want to learn to speak Mandarin, I recommend you go out and buy this course immediately. After you have learned to speak Mandarin at a conversational level from the course like I have, then go out and learn to write it if you will. Not me. I'm thrilled enough just to be able to speak and understand Mandarin at a normal conversational level. 2 stars (Almost but not quite) - There is no written version of the words and phrases on the CD's. A Pinyin version would make this set exceptional, and accompanying Chinese characters would make it even more useful. As is, this version depends solely on memorizing sounds and their associated meaning. Furthermore, similar sounds cannot be compared via their written counterpart. A lot of good work and design wasted for lack of "blueprints." Without additional instructional materials, even taking notes is all but impossible, for there is no way to associate the sounds on the CD's with any... This review is for Behind the Wheel French 8 CDs by Language Dynamics. Lest you be swayed by the panic reviews that state that there isn't enough time to repeat or that the months of the year or the days shouldn't be presented in this order .... blah, blah, blah. Here are my objective, unbiased and clear opinions: First of all, the course is great. Easy to use and I mean E A S Y. This is not the first Language Dynamics course I have used, nor will it be my last. In my opinion the method used is beyond reproach and is far superior to anything out there that I have yet experienced. Celine has a marvellous and clear voice. Mark sounds confident and knowledgeable. Together they form an instructional 'team' dedicated to teaching you how to speak French. One is armed with native knowledge and native accent of the French language. The other, teaching experience and understanding of learning French as a native speaker of English. This rare and invaluable combination provides you, the learner, with a double insight. Celine's native accent and fluency. Mark's teaching experience and understanding of the French language. 5 stars (The Best I've Seen) - This book is probably the most used one I own. I refer to it for just about everything. You need all the vector calculus equations? There they are on the front cover. Need more info on them? First chapter covers vec. calc. pretty well. As a beginning grad student in physics this book was invaluable. I lacked the EM background many around me had, but this book saved me. For instance, mutual induction...what the heck is it? I never learned that in undergrad and if I did, I sure don't remember. Well, I could scour my grad text Jackson for a couple hours and still never find a decent explanation or find it used in a much to technical context. Or I can look it up in Griffiths and find it explained with clarity and simplicity. Of course, if you've mastered undergrad EM, Griffiths may be baby food. But I can't imagine living without it. Jackson does go way more into detail but often when looking something up, that is more of a hindrance. The problems in Griffiths are good because they range from trivial to very difficult. But as far as I know there are no Jackson type problems where you also don't learn anything valuable from them after the first time. Griffiths problems tend to actually teach you and not just drive you to suicide. In fact, I would recommend do many problems from the text that are not assigned because you will learn a lot from his problems. I think that is a sign of a good text book where every aspect of it lends to the learning process. 2 stars (Lack of practical insight) - It's been years since I've been in school when I took a course using this book. Years in the real world, I came back to this book to clear up an issue I had when designing an electronics device that required knowledge of magnetization and, magnetic field density, susceptability, etc. What I came to realize from consulting the book was there are basically no real-life practical problems that have real-life results with real computed values. 5 stars (Too good...) - This book is beyond review.. Its in a league of its own. The content is thorough, indepth and is easy to comprehend by anyone. I found the book enjoyable, not just informative. The graphs in the book reiterate what the text says in an easy and understandable way. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who would want to master vehicle dynamics, as well as engineers seeking to have topics such as aerodynamics and mechanics explained better, and in a more specified field. If you were missing deep theoretical background on tuning your sports car or street car, this volume is for you. It is impossible to describe in detail what this textbook is about, in a single review. What I liked most is the chapter on dampers (shock absorbers). It gave me the answers to lots of questions that I had before reading this published work, for example how to choose "ride/handling compromise" when adjusting damping ratio? Why stiffer dampers are more comfortable on large-amplitude bumps, while softer dampers provide smoother ride on small-amplitude bumps? "In an automobile, a suspension is used to reduce the discomfort induced by unevenness in the highway. As measure of discomfort is the vertical acceleration that the passenger is subjected while sitting in the vehicle". The book demonstrates the model where the passenger is linked to the road via three springs in a sequence: tire, coil and the seat, and one damper (shock absorber).
