The Holy Longing- The Search for A Christian Spirituality

5 stars (The Holy Longing) - I am ready to listen to the audio book for a second time. I could easily relate to the author as he delved into the struggles of spirituality in one's faith life. I am going to have to listen to the Shattered Latern! 4 stars (Do religion and the business world "mix"?) - There is a clear difference between the type of spirituality the Christian "right" panders to (re: George W.) and the kind of spirituality that true Christians look to reach/gain on a daily basis. Rolheiser's book does not preach or make one feel like they are listening to a moron like the 700 Club's Pat Robertson. Rather, he is grounded in his principles - a modern day version of Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" in its sincere messages. 5 stars (A Comprehensive Understanding of Christianity) - This is a great book for any one who is struggling spiritually or wants to deepen and enrich their faith. Written in a very engaging style this is a great book for understanding what Christianity is and how to live a Christian life. Rolheiser's biggest contribution, I believe, is his emphasis on the need to balance personal prayer with community (the church), social action and a mellowness of heart (doing these things for the right reasons). His chapter on sexuality may seem the least grounded, but I think it's one of his most important, because too often Christianity has associated sexuality with the secular and bad, rather than affirming its role in the Christian life. I really believe there is something for everyone within the covers of this book. ...

Blue Like Jazz- Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality

5 stars (wonderful!) - This book was wonderful! I would recommend it to anyone, especially those who don't like Christians or for Christians to challenge them to go deeper and find real freedom. It's worth it, whatever the cost. 5 stars (One Man's "Garbage", Another Man's Treasure ) - This is one of those books that brings out the beauty and honesty of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Don understands that the only way we can survive this world is through community in the body of Christ, and the only way that can happen is through honesty. Miller uses his testimony to tackle some tough issues like freedom and artistic creativity. He also reminds us through expereinces with his 'liberal friends' what Christ looks like when it comes to social action and where many follwers of Christ have been taking naps. "There is no holiness but social holiness". Miller is able to paint a picture of who he is in a way that, when you put down the book, you feel like you just had a conversation with him. This book isn't scripture, it's an autobiography [Which means it's about his personal life experiences :) ]. Donald Miller's testimony is one that has the potential to impact many people. Pick up this book today! 5 stars (Not a 5-step guide to living the Christian life - just one person's perspective on life and Christianity.) - After reading some of the reviews posted, I decided to write one of my own. I'd like people to remember that this book isn't a step by step guide on how to live the Christian life. I don't think Donald Miller's intentions (if I may be so bold) are anything other than getting the reader to think about his or her own flawed thinking about Jesus and Christianity. Some of the reviewers (Garbage comes to mind) ironically fall into that fundamentalist, legalistic category that Miller has written about in his book. I think Miller just wants us to be as honest with ourselves regarding our beliefs and lives and direction, as he has been with hi...

A New Kind of Christian- A Tale of Two Friends on a Spiritual Journey

5 stars (WHAT IF CHRISTIANITY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING TO CHRIST??? ) - Christianity Today called A NEW KIND OF CHRISTIAN the most dangerous book this year to Christianity. This may be true, but what if Christianity is the most dangerous thing to Christ??? McLaren's book points toward a real and honest relationship with Christ like no other book I've read. It is culturally relevant without contradicting the Word of God. It IS challenging, but that is a good thing. It is a GOOD thing when someone makes you think outside the box. You don't have to be threatened by that or agree with what they said. Many of the reviews I've read about this book communicate fear, but NOTHING that McLaren said contradicted Christ's life and teachings. If we look at Christ, we will see that it was the RELIGIOUS PEOPLE he was constantly rebuking during his ministry. RELIGION is one of the most threatening things to Christ. McLaren encourages his readers to look to scripture and try looking past the self-serving institution we have created and given the name of "church". "Church" is not supposed to be the country club we've created it to be but a body of believers, seeking Christ. Read the book and genuinely ask Christ to help you discern McLaren's words. If it is not of God, He will give you the wisdom and protection from that. 5 stars (Thought provoking and honest...) - This is a great beginner read to bring in new ideas and theology that will help people who are struggling with how their faith is not only relevant, but also authentic and Christian in the postmodern world. This is an awesome book. 1 stars (A Familiar Kind of Heretic) - King Solomon told us in the Book of Ecclesiastes that there "Is nothing new under the sun." When we reach a time of spiritual crisis, like Brian McLaren's pastor, Dan did in this book, we can react in a number of ways. As Christians we should go back to our roots, to the Creator God, to Jesus, to His words in the Bible, to the people who love us. Or...
