2 stars (Earlier versions are better) - This book includes numerous tear-out exercises and cases. It might be appropriate for a classroom but it is not ideal for prospective entrepreneurs. Earlier versions of this book had good material on writing a business plan and determining appropriate sources of capital and less extraneous fillers. Save yourself a lot of money and buy a more practical book on the subject or the 1995 version if you want the business plan and financing materials. 5 stars (Book condition) - Very quick delivery. Book had some marks, but excellent condition. Would recommend strongly if you want the book right away. 4 stars (Comprehensive "Owners' Manual" for Entrepreneurs) - Like the previous reviewer, I too purchased the 4th Edition of this text (paperback), and was extremely pleased. Before starting my current business, I consulted extensively with this text, and was pleased with its comprehensive, practical nature - covering everything from a personality assessment of one's readiness for self-employment, to exhaustive preparation information for a business plan. The book also extensively covers financing an entrepreneurial venture, comparing both debt and equity (including Venture Capital) methodologies. On a practical note, I also like the fact that all the pages are perforated...there have been several that I have taken out and used hands-on! I cannot comment on the relative worth of this version vs. the newer version, as I only have the 4th edition. ... 5 stars (This is one of the best business statistics book) - This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy. 2 stars (Good, but could be better) - This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully. ... 5 stars (Got a minute?) - A simple, straightforward story that provides handy advice for anyone who has to manage people. To boot, most should be able to finish it in a few hours time. Truly a classic, I give it 5 stars easy. Other self-help books I liked include "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works. Happy reading! 5 stars (Must read for anyone) - This book is a must read for everyone whether they are a boss, parent or just someone who is interested in becoming more effective in their life. This book as well as the others by these authors ("The Present" and "Who Moved my Cheese") contain powerful messages with an economy of words, they are all around 100 pages each. I have read everything I can find by them and have shared them with family and friends. 5 stars (simple and direct) - This smart little book is easy to read and goes straight to the point. As its title suggests, it can be read quickly and you'll be able to benefit from its teaching right away, which makes it a good example in itself for a book on time management and productivity. 5 stars (Excellent condition - textbook with library binding) - The book arrived swiftly and in excellent condition. I did not know what to expect for the library binding, but I have been very happy so far. It is a plain hardcover with a piece (color) of the original softcover professionally glued to the front. The content is exactly as it should be. Much better durability and great quality. Smooth transaction process, no snags and no problems. 3 stars (It's good, but the discribution of it should be more specific) - Actually, it's an international version. 4 stars (Govt communicators should also see Media Relations Handbook) - Cutlip's book is a classic, but for a newer book written by a Washington pro, see Media Relations Handbook for Agencies, Associations, Nonprofits and Congress. The Handbook is written by Brad Fitch, who spent more than a decade on the Hill, with a Foreword by Mike McCurry. What others have said about Fitch's book (there are more testimonials on the book's web site): "Great advice for beginners and experienced media hands. If you are a media relations professional--either beginner or seasoned veteran--this is the book for you. Brad Fitch, who spent many years fielding reporters' tough questions on Capitol Hill, has written a timely, practical guide to handling media relations that is filled with solid professional advice. What goes into a press release? How do you develop a strategic message? You've got a digital camera and a fax machine, but what else does your office need to effectively handle the media? Before you start talking to a reporter, do you know the difference between 'on the record,' 'off the record,' and 'background'? When there's an immediate crisis in your organization, what are the eight mistakes that you absolutely must avoid? How do you handle your paranoid boss when he or she has to confront the press? You'll find the answers to these and many other everyday problems in this book. Fitch also gives valuable advice on how to set up an effective website and how to use e-mail for optimum communications. Excellent book for professionals who work in federal or state agencies, trade associations, non-profits, state legislatures or Congress. It's the only handbook you'll ever need." -- Dennis W. 5 stars (Buy this one first) - Even though I have both the "in Brief" and the unabridged editions, it is only the "in Brief" edition that I take with me to my meetings. I recommend that you buy and read the "in Brief" edition first. 5 stars (User-friendly meeting guide) - This has to be the most user-friendly book I've seen, starting with the inside of the front cover. It says, "If you only have 30 minutes" then read certain chapters. Somehow these experts figured out what the rest of us would need to know and how we would be looking for it. Maybe they had a panel of non-experts to critique. There are chapters detailing what the words are that you use to make something happen and how to use those words. Best of all, everywhere you look there are copious examples. In the back are succinct tables of those same words and there is also a chapter on how to find the completely complete information on the topic in the big "Robert's" book Most of the book is concerned with what you need to know as a member of the group. There are separate chapters for an officer of the group, which contain the things that most of us don't need to know. This is not a book you'd save for a winter evening curled up in front of the fireplace. It's to tell you all sorts of things you'd really rather not have to know, but that you really need to know. This book identifies what goes wrong with the best managers and how to get back on track. I read a ton of books and am extremely critical, but this is an obvious 5 star. It's an easy read and is applicable to both personal and professional relationships. 5 stars (great) - i ordered five books at the same time from all different suppliers and this was the first to come great timing and just a great company! 4 stars (Eye Opening) - While the storyline is a bit cheesy, this book drives home an important point. 3 stars (Some good ideas, but not the best.) - This is a good book, but it is not one of the best. Get copies of Kotter, Schein, Beitler, or Collins' books. 5 stars (An Excellent How To Guide on Managing/Creating Change.) - I found the book to be extremely informative. Douglas Smith has done a masterfull job of creating a step by step guide for the process of both Creating and Managing Change in any organization. He also points out why many Change Efforts fail. The 10 step guide that he has created should help us all avoid the common pitfalls of this process and help greatly improve our odds of success. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either thinking about starting a change effort or currently in the midst of one now. 5 stars (The best hand-on book about Change Management available.) - This is clearly the best book about the practical side of Change Management I've read so far (and I've read more then 20 by now). 1 stars (A book for graduates--Not undergrads) - After the first week of our class falling behind, my professor mentioned to our class that this book was the wrong format for undergrads. So this book is only good as the teacher and the students. It's easy to read, but hard to understand. And, the CD-ROM was not user-friendly enough, but had an awesome integration into MS Excel. 4 stars (Good) - The book gives practical, digestible essence of leadership. This makes it much better to digest as one can read and not be overwhelmed with pages upon pages of info that will keep you from reading it. The points are specific, he uses stories to highlight the quality, as well as some practical ideas/recommendations for each quality. It also gives you a suggested way to read as one should not try to read it in one sitting, but read one quality and meditate/live it for a day to have it sink in. 5 stars (Don't Let Your Skills Keep You From Leading) - Don't Let Your Skills Keep You From Successful "Are you a thinker, a doer, or a clutch player? The better you are, the greater potential for influence you will have with your people" -John C. Maxwell In order to excel you need to develop your skills... in order to lead effectively you need to evaluate how you lead then practice how those you lead respond to your leadership. John C. 4 stars (Determination to Grow Rich!) - Determination is the key to success! How oft we dream to reach our goals and get what we want? It's the determination to Grow Rich - Get what you want and make up your mind till you succeed. The theme of this book is absolutely tempting and convincing to believe and after reading the book, it really boost up ego and motivates to grow in riches and succeed. By riches, do we mean just money? I guess not. Because this book is all about building up your own self esteem and living up to your desires till opportunity strikes your door and welcomes you. Napolean Hill in his book has set an example of the Edison Dictating Machine and Barnes took the opportunity to talk to Edison and suggested him that he can sell the product when Edison's salesmen were not enthu to sell it. Thus, Barnes became a business associate and proved he can 'Think and grow rich'. Thus, with yet more examples, the book gives an insight to use mind power and use the sixth senses and be persistent and determined until you get what you want. However, sometimes it's growing Rich in many areas and missed out is 'money power' which the author says to believe in self and things you can do. Success is ever personal and whatever you define it, you grow Rich - rich in thoughts, rich in awareness, in accumulating wealth, knowledge, etc. A good book for self betterment and feeling on high spirits. Good pick. 1 stars (One HUGE problem mars this book) - Hill offers the formula for success from Andrew Carnegie, giving suggestion, planning, decision making and other formula for becoming a success in buisness or anything you want to attempt. However, I was always troubled by ruthless buisness cut throats and what they were probably thinking to justify their practices. Where did that come from? Could it be they are just greedy? It's a little more complex than that. Since this seems to be the "Bible" for most buisness people,I decided to read the book. I found what I was lo... 5 stars (Packed with Knowledge!) - Leadership isn't easy. The best leaders force their followers to face unpleasant realities and then figure out the solutions for themselves. That's why leadership is so risky, argue Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linsky in this engaging tome. The authors analyze the successes and failures of leaders ranging from Yitzhak Rabin to Bill Clinton, with stops along the way to examine the leadership styles of former Coca-Cola CEO M. Douglas Ivester and NBA coach Phil Jackson. At times, the authors' rules of thumb seem too general. Yet, their real-world examples blend well with their leadership theory to present a useful guide to leadership. We recommend this excellent book to anyone facing a difficult leadership situation. 5 stars (Why is Leadership so hard) - For me the measure of a book is whether it breaks through and reaches me in some way. This often occurs when the writing pushes me to think about my experiences in new ways. This book has done that many times over. It goes beyond mechanistic models to help me consider and reconsider my role as leader and as follower. 4 stars (Exercise your leadership!) - This book you may change your definition of "leadership" slightly. In this book we can see not only how Presidents exercised their leadership but also that middle management class people are on the line as well to achieve their goals and they definitely used their leadership. Those people are analyzed in the same manner regardless of their social status. Same people, both famous and anonymous, appear in the book again and again in different occasions as different examples. The authors weaved them into the narrative story. Sometime they failed, the other time they succeeded. You would feel them closely, even Presidents. Further more, we need to be our own master and for that sake we need to be able to manage ourselves. It means you must exercise leadership for yourself! Since same people and story appeared several times,... 4 stars (Basic introduction with a few bright spots) - This book serves as a basic introduction to retail, though it often feels like "baby talk". It basically describes, without much analysis, the types of policies retailers adopt in several areas including merchandising, inventory management, ordering, HR, finance, store layout, etc. Good as a reference to what others are doing, but not at the cutting edge of retail. 4 stars (A realistic review of Retailing....) - RMgmt is a great book with valuable case studies from people with REAL experience. 4 stars (A Classic that has been superceded.) - Getting to Yes started a revolution in negotiation, both by stressing principled negotiation and in making the material accessible to a very wide audience. It is still a good read, is still taught in universities and continuing education, and is an excellent starting point for people who are new to negotiation but intend a deep study because of its historical significance and its content. However, having taught Getting to Yes and having used principled bargaining in practice, I think there are a few shortcomings that are dealt with in other books. While Fischer and Ury do make the point that principled bargaining includes sticking to your priciples and not being a pushover, it is not emphasized enough. I have even found myself being too cooperative after reviewing this text because the emphasis is on being cooperative. I think this is a partcular danger for new/lay negotiators, especially if this is the first text they're exposed to or they intend to practice these concepts in daily life. The tone of the book is just a bit too friendly. As a result, there has been a backlash (wrongly, in my opinion) against this text in some quarters. The verbal judo section at the end is excellent, giving techniques for dealing with unreasonable people that are great. I would've liked more of these very practical tips and examples to go along with them, but the book as a whole is already a lot to digest. Newer versions of GTY do add more material here. Newer texts take these problems into account. The best, in my opinion, is the follow-on by Ury, "Getting Past No." It can be read without having read "Getting to Yes," although it is very interesting as a follow-on, too. In it, Ury is clearly taking into account the criticism that GTY was too soft and he presents a more robust vision of principled bargaining. 4 stars (Powerful Concepts) - A good primer or review for anyone confounded by negotiating and especially those pr... 4 stars (Very useful + PMBOK must - Passed exam) - Yes this book is good. But ONLY in conjunction with PMBOK guide. The Inputs/Tools/Outputs are not that intuitive in Rita's book. I had several questions that I could answer only with PMBOK's knowledge. 5 stars (Easy to Understand) - Good study guide that is easy to read. Nice sample questions at the end that can help prepare one for the exam. 4 stars (Found it very useful for PMP Prep) - Initially I did not buy this book when I was starting PMP preparation. When I heard about the Book and CD in many forums, I was curious to try it out. The book and CD together turned out to be very useful, even through I wouldn't say those were essential for my prep work. 5 stars (Great Practical Tools) - If you've ever wondered about how to have a single conversation that will make a difference, this book will provide the guidance for that conversation. Scott is quite skilled at creating a simple approach to difficult situations. One caution that I would offer is that this book is not a magic silver bullet. You have to do some work and actually call upon some courage on your own. The tools that this book provides is only have the battle. That which you bring will provide the missing link. There is great value here. This book is truly a gift that you will find valuable. I recommend it highly. 5 stars (Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work and in Life One Conversation at a Time) - This is a worthwhile book for personal and leadership development. It contains practical tools such as: 1) The Decision Tree for delegation and professional development 2) A confrontation model 3) Questions for one-to-ones (fuel for discussion with colleagues and direct reports) 4) A Leader's Stump Speech: Where am I going? Why am I going there? Who is going with me? How will I get there? 5) The concept of our "Emotional Wake" - worth reading and pondering about. "An emotional wake is what you remember after I'm gone. The aftermath, aftertaste, or afterglow." 6) The image of the crucible to remind us that our job is "simply to hold, so that whatever needs to be said, what needs to be heard, can safely be said and heard." And much more.... There are also many fresh metaphors -- one is tempted to keep highlighting the book. Rich quotations, references to books, music, poetry.... good examples and stories. I also appreciated the "Assignments" and Brief Summaries at the end of each chapter. 5 stars (Excellent Resource) - I bought the book on CD, listened to it, and immediately listened to it a second time.
