Workouts in a Binder- Swim Workouts for Triathletes

4 stars (A good tool, but with one serious flaw..) - The workouts and the book overall are good, and for the self-coached athlete, much better than trying to think up a workout every day. There are two main sets for each workout, one longer than the other, but they could use more differentiation - one may be 2600 meters and the other 2300 meters. It should be more like 2600 and 1900. Or slip a third option in the middle. Of course, if you are reasonably experienced, it's not had to extrapolate whatever distance you plan to do for the day. But....the flaw...once you get it wet, it's nearly impossible to get it dry again! The pages are waterproof, but they stick together and even a little splash seems to get every page wet. Unless you stand it up and open as many pages as you can, rotating this every couple hours for several days, you just can't get it dry before it starts to mildew and stink. I evn tried putting it in the dryer (on that removable non-rotating shelf) but unless you get those pages open, it won't dry. Two solutions I've found- (1) take off the spiral binding, hole punch the pages (not easy, since the pages are plastic), but it into a binder, and just take a single page for the day's workout to the pool, or (2) keep the whole thing in a big ziploc bag, turning to the page you want first, then zipping it in for the pool. This work pretty well, and keeps you from owning "Stinky Workouts in a Binder". 3 stars (Try The Waterproof Coach) - This book appears to be similar to the Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes published several years ago. The Waterproof Coach has more versatility because it's interior workout pages can be rearranged to create thousands of combinations of workouts. 5 stars (I can't wait to get in the pool again!) - Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes is my new "Most Valuable Tool" for training this season. Bernhardt begins the book by making a concise case for sound, purposefu...

Speed Improvement for Young Athletes- How to Sprint Faster in Your Sport in 30 Workouts

5 stars (From a parent and age group coach) - Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you. The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works. 4 stars (Univ Prof., Track Coach, Author, Former NFL Speed Consultant) - March 3, 2004 Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD. After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book. Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts. Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read. Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing. Speed Improvement for Young Athletes is readable and follows a "how to do it" approach without a lot of "hype." My experience with speed is that it first requires self-motivation. There is a lot of material and e...

Let Me Play - The Story of Title IX- The Law That Changed the Future of Girls in America

5 stars (Richie's Picks: LET ME PLAY) - "Female admissions to colleges and graduate programs picked up speed, driven by female ambition, the law, and a growing acceptance that it was simply wrong to reject someone just for being a girl. Between 1971 and 1976 the number of women attending college jumped 40 percent. By the fall of 1976 one in every four law students was a woman, up from fewer than one in ten in 1971; likewise, a quarter of first-year medical students were female, up from about one in seven just five years before." Recently at this year's Book Expo in New York City, I had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with Patricia Macias. At publishing conventions, Patricia is known as the wife of author Ben Saenz. But back home in El Paso, she is more frequently referred to as "Your Honor." As I wandered the exhibition halls at Book Expo, I frequently got the chance to catch up with old friends in the publishing industry. Many of the women I've known for years who are employed by the large publishing houses now have titles like "President & Publisher" or "Vice President and Associate Publisher." They not only have the positions; they have the power that accompanies those titles. I also had the opportunity at Book Expo to chat briefly with my favorite member of the United States Senate. I feel so fortunate to be represented by Barbara Boxer who, like me, grew up in New York and moved westward. When we first elected Barbara to the US Senate in 1992, having her join Diane Feinstein there in representing California, it was the first time in US history that two women Senators were representing the same state at the same time. Myra Bradwell would have though that it was long past time. "In 1869, Mrs. Bradwell passed the Illinois bar exam with high honors and turned in her application to practice law. Though she easily qualified, she was turned down because she was a married woman. She filed a lawsuit, but the Illinois Supreme Court turned her d...

Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes

5 stars (My Bible for Sports Nutrition) - In the past I would almost always suffer from some form of muscle pain, cramping, or dehydration during marathons and triathlons. That was before I found Monique Ryan's book. Two weeks ago, I completed the Ironman Arizona triathlon and Monique Ryan's book was a strong factor in getting me through the race without any cramping or muscle pain whatsoever. The book is perfect - it gives you comprehensive nutrition information but also gives you plain, simple guidelines for eating and drinking - both in general and in preparation for a race. If you are preparing for a race and follow the book, you'll know not only what to eat and drink but how much and when. There are guides for the few days before a race, the night before, the morning of the race, and of course, during the race. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in nutrition, but especially for everyone involved in endurance sports. 5 stars (This is a good sports nutrition guide) - I have one more chapter to read in which i read the almost the whole book in two day. I like this book because it takes the place of a nutritionist. Someone i can't afford, but wish i could. I am also a vegetarian and like that the author mentions the vegetarian diet often when talking about nutrition sources. They don't spend all thier time on vegetarian diets but for instance mentions that most vegans should take a B12 vitamin when talking about B vitamins. Also when giving a list af protien sources tofu and soymilk are in there too (which not all nutrionist do) This book doesn't have to be for aspiring or actual pro athletes but for weekend warriors as well. As long as you are not knowledge challenged. This book goes into detail about what your body does during training and what sources of energy it is using and may go over the heads of some readers. But i like to know why and what my body is doing! The first two thirds is all about general nutrition and fluids. Then there a...
