3 stars (good design support book) - i found the book to be a good support when approaching a design. it lays out a series of axioms which help the designer to look at various design stratagies at the initial design stages. 5 stars (With absolute certitude a future "classic" design book) - If you want to make some money, I recommend you buy a couple copies of this book now and put them away for 10 years. With absolute certitude the "Universal Patterns of Design" (UPOD) will be a future "classic" design book. There are very few books that fit this category, but this will be one. The author's have done an absolutely stunning job of condensing the patterns format in codifying 210 design principles which human beings need to relate to products and works of art. This book rivals ANY other design work I have ever read. Absolutely highest recommendation. 5 stars (Great Introduction to important themes) - This book is a great introduction to many themes relevant to all form of design. Many references are given for anyone wishing to further develop their understanding of the theme discussed. ... 4 stars (Substantial Book ! ) - With what books cost these days, this a very nice art book covering most eras and the more important works of art though out history. 4 stars (Still a great book) - For those who are new to art history and need a good overview, Gardner has always been a great place to start. It and Janson's History of Art are the books most often used for introductory art history classes, and you can see why: Garner gives a really broad and understandable overview of thousands of years of art history. Plus, nearly all of the book's illustrations are in color, which is a very rare thing for any art history book. My only criticisms are for more advanced students of art history. First of all, if you've got the 11th edition, don't worry about getting the 12th - the new edition makes relatively small changes to the old version, adding more color pictures as well as the CD-ROM. And those who already have a good knowledge of art history may want to look elsewhere - being such a wide survey, "Art Through the Ages" doesn't have time to go into a lot of the little details and lesser-known pieces that make art history so fun. 5 stars (Excellent introduction to art history) - I first used Gardner's Art Through the Ages for my AP art history class back in high school, and I still refer to it sometimes for my college art history courses. It goes over a huge array of artists and periods (both in the Western and non-Western traditions) and is helpful if you need to find some general information or refresh your memory. The picture reproductions are very good (if not slightly dark). Be aware that this book will sometimes not provide in-depth explanations for all of its subjects; however, this text is a firm foundation of knowledge for beginner art history students. Highly recommended. ... 5 stars (Get this book if you can.) - The Quilt's of Gee's Bend exhibit was at the Corcoran in Washington DC earlier this year. I went 3 times with different people. Enjoyed each visit like it was the first! I saw the book then, but I am buying it now. It is informative and inspirational (my mother and I are working on our first quilt together and have others planned). The book has so many examples of the fine workmanship and talent and beauty that grew out of their necessity. Get this book! If you're luck enough to go to the exhibit - do it! - at least once! 5 stars (Read about this in Country Home magazine.) - I believe Country Home wrote an article about these woman and pictured them and some of the quilts. I found it fascinating! It made me thankful for what I've got and showed me that beauty is everywhere -- its just a matter of how you interpret the world around you. Erin 5 stars (more than a coffee table book) - The Quilts of Gee;s Bend is much more than a beautiful coffee table book. It is that, too, of course. The book is filled with social history of this small place near Selma, Alabama. I've been lucky enough to visit Gee's Bend and see the quilt-making process. The Whitney Museum exhibit must have been wonderful. Sunday Morning on CBS did a story on the exhibit. The quilters traveled to New York for the opening and entertained the guests with their singing. That's what Gee's Bend is like: A rich yet poor stop on the road where women made the best of what they had and turned out great art in the process. ... 4 stars (For the price a good book) - I bought the book form my interior design class. It is an older version and missing a few pages that the new version has, but I have been suprised at how similar the books are. I am glad I didn't pay the $80 for the new one. 5 stars (Thorough and Educational) - Interiors is a complete review of the interior design process. It covers lighting, furniture, fabric, wall treatments, and more. What makes this book so versatile is it's flexibility in being able to be used by someone interested in the profession, as well as those just casually interested in design. If you're building a new home, redecorating your current home, or interested in exploring the profession this book will prove incredibly helpful. It will give you the vocabulary and the how-to for going about a number of design problems. I would actually recommend the newer addition (which is more up-to-date), but can't write the review in that space yet. 5 stars (Interiors:An Introduction) - We are using this book in the interior design class. I think it's good textbook for me. I can learn history of interior by this book. ... 5 stars (Excellent Overview) - For those just getting started in the world of art, this is a wonderful overview. It covers at a high-level the major achievements and associates those achievements with the culture and/or history of the time. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (The Best Start) - I am starting my first Ar History class this fall, and I was a bit lost on what to expect. I bought this and gained more confidence in the subject. The text is easy to understand and full of information along with interesting facts. It's far from a bore to read and gets into just enough so you'll have an understanding of the overall history. 4 stars (A easy-to-understand layout makes art history comprehensible for all!) - When I was a senior in high school (this would be 1999), my AP Art History teacher actually listed this book as a required text. He said that it would help to clarify any murky concepts, and he was right. I used this book to supplement our more academic art history texts. Between "The Annotated Mona Lisa" and episodes of Sister Wendy, I was able to more fully understand the historical context of art in a non-esoteric, humanistic way. (I also passed the AP exam, but that's because I had a great teacher. Thanks Mr. Marcucilli!) I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a little perspective on the past, and have a good time while doing so. It touches on key points in art history and gives you the right amount of useful information... granted, the focus IS primarily on Western art; in the near future I would love to see a similar tome for non-Western arts as well. ... 5 stars (Outstanding Book -Dont miss it) - This is an outstanding book, with plenty of pictures - great insider material on furniture and architecture. And I already have a design MA with my own firm. 2 stars (NOT SUCH GREAT BUY) - I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS TWO REVIEWERS, THIS BOOK IS GREAT ONLY IN THE WRITTEN INFORMATION, IN THE PICTORIALS IT IS INDEED SORELY LACKING. I HONESTLEY SAY THIS WITH FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE I MYSELF AM CURRENTLY A DESIGN STUDENT, AND I HAD TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR A MAJOR PART OF MY INTERIOR DESIGN EDUCATION. I RECOMMEND THAT THIS BE A BOOK THAT YOU CHECK OUT FROM THE LIBRARY FOR REFERENCE AND NOT ONE YOU PURCHASE. 2 stars (Underwhelming and overpriced) - The text of this volume is decent and well organized but in the area that most designers are interested in, visual examples, it is sorely lacking. A very minimal section of color photographs (which jump from Roman to the Renaissance. No sign of the Gothic)and a series of low contrast black and white ones are augmented with a series of uninspired drawings. All of this might still be helpful and useful were it not for the price. There are many volumes on furniture and decor that have come on the market recently which are superior in their content and priced more reasonably. ... 5 stars (Claudine does it again.) - Another great book with well written text and techniques. As always, Claudine uses simple objects into wonderful works of art. 5 stars (This Book Rocks!!) - This book is yet another wonderful Creation from Claudine!! It is packed full of great ideas that are great for getting your juices flowing! It's a must have for those gloomy days when nothing is going together, she offers wonderful techinques that with bring it all together! 5 stars (Claudine Hellmuth) - I highly recomend this book for anyone interested in mixed media or collage illustration. Her books are truly unique and inspired. ...
